13/12/2017 20:28 | Fed rate up 0.25% to 1.25-1.50%. 30 years down 0.03% to 2.74%. Historical averages suggest a slope of only 1.24% is too flat and the Fed should be looking to cut next. The UK is almost identical at 1.79%-0.50%=1.29% and suggests the B of E should be looking to cut, too. The UK yield curve has been too flat for about 18 months which is probably why we are having a slowdown, with some indications of recession. The US yield curve has only been too flat about 6 months but the Fed seems to be trying harder to properly flatten it. Maybe the US economy will catch up with the UK's slowdown if the Fed continues to tighten aggressively. | aleman
13/12/2017 17:49 | A much more encouraging +0.28% today. ICP is the best value riser, closely followed by COST and TCAP. AV. is the worst value faller. If traditions hold then the Santa Rally will start tomorrow, it is typically the last 10 trading days of the year. Some might argue it started 3 days ago. An extra 2 - 3% by year end would be fantastic but I am not sure how far we have left to run being so close to year highs. I live in hope. :-) Interesting to read that the jet stream is slowing. I have heard it said that this is one of the expected impacts of global warming but for most of Northern Europe it will lead to colder temperatures as we lose the warming effect of the Caribbean air. | hyden
13/12/2017 17:33 | freddie - sounds an interesting subject. I'd be surprised if Greenland ice melt was significant compared to the volume of other returning cold Arctic waters but I've never really considered it. Lots of red but only -0.1%. Grey and wet. 5.7C high but felt colder. Already 1.8C with precipitation due so maybe sleet or snow. | aleman
13/12/2017 17:12 | A mixed bag, main stocks [folio majority] were +£4.50 to the good whereas the other few (small caps) -0.03% . Worst value fallers : PGIT -2.6%, BGO -3.2%, GVC -1.8%, RTC -3.4%. Highest value risers : ASY +3.7%, HSBA +1.6%, PHTM +3.9%, BA. +1.8%. Subscribed for some SDV 'C' shares, but only used 1/3 of my entitlement as I don't wish to be overweight here. Max temp 6C, snow cover all gone. | blueliner
13/12/2017 17:09 | Aleman. The reason I asked is that someone I know who should know and is not prone to stupidity said that he had heard that the gulf stream is or has slowed. Freezing up of Greenland would of course halt that since it is fresh water from Greenlands summer ice melt off that reduces the salinity and hence density of the warm water from the Caribean (the stuff that sinks right up north) that powers the conveyor. If the Gulf stream has slowed this could be a partial reason for this cooler winter and we will just have to wait for it to get going again. It would also explain partially explain increased ice up north. | freddie ferret
13/12/2017 17:07 | Very sad they felt they had to shoot that poor polar bear, I guess he hadn't read the signs! | mrphil
13/12/2017 16:55 | Strange old day with the SIPP giving up -0.23%, worst fallers UU., BP. & AV. whereas the pot managed +0.75% thanks to AMS, AIEA & DC. Trolley patrol this evening then I think we may use up a couple of our Cineworld vouchers (courtesy of Lloyds) and see Paddington 2. Brings back fond memories! | mrphil
13/12/2017 16:50 | freddie - Weatherbell today has the ice reaching out to Iceland (where that oddly cold bit was) and looking like possibly getting there. It's only about 25-30 miles short which probably has odd bits of ice in it so polar bears won't have that much swimming to do. (They can swim 10 times that. It's not a good idea for them to try it though as Icelanders tend to shoot them which is why none live there.) Click top left to enlarge A bear was shot last year when ice extend about 3/4 to Iceland. Greenland is starting to look like it could see its coast freeze all the way around. I'll need to check when that last happened. | aleman
13/12/2017 15:47 | Looks like it's not a good day for utilities which will hit the SIPP, and I see AV. is having a wobble. | mrphil
13/12/2017 15:44 | Just received the latest IHS Markit PMI Directors Report. Can't see it on their website to post link, I only have it in pdf. | mrphil
13/12/2017 14:11 | Good news after their recent disappointment | mrphil
13/12/2017 12:20 | Personally, I can't see how we can avoid unemployment rising with all this automation. | mrphil
13/12/2017 11:28 | Claimant Count +5.9k. ILO unemployment fell 26k. 36k fewer jobs in Yorks. and Humber. in Sept. than June, where Employment Rate fell from 73.7% to 72.6%. UK fell from 75.3% to 75.1% - 56k fewer, of which 55k were full-time and 41k were self-employed. (The 56k fall in full-time self-employed is an odd slump- business rate changes or does this tie in with the slump in van sales? Are sole traders feeling the squeeze?) 75k were lost in the private sector while public sector gained 19k. Hours worked down. Inactives up, especially amongst 16-24 as over 50s activity rose (women retiring later?). On the whole ILO numbers show huge numbers of young dropping out of the job market - but not into unemployment and only partly into education - as oldies hang on longer before retiring and self employment fell sharply. What do these mean? Several regions saw unemployment rise. I prefer the Claimant Count trend which shows a slow rise since Feb 2016 - things continuing to get marginally worse. The ILO shows a weird churn that seems to be hitting the young - often the first sign of a change of trend as older people have to stick in, or take, the more casual jobs that they would more usually hope would only be temporary. Not an awful report yet, but showing more signs of deterioration, with a few regions showing recessionary trends. | aleman
13/12/2017 09:52 | Thanks Mrphil | professor x
13/12/2017 09:15 | Morning all, I made just about enough to buy a round of drinks yesterday. Thankfully today is looking more positive. Overnight rain has helped the thaw and most roads are now clear. Side streets are passable with care. More rain is forecast, turning to sleet later. | hyden
13/12/2017 08:45 | What a sensible use of waste land - as long as the construction workers are suitably protected! | mrphil
13/12/2017 08:28 | Morning Professor X, all good here and trust you are too? That LCG news looks to me like an additional listing, it does say "The Company's Ordinary Shares will remain admitted to trading on AIM following Admission" | mrphil
13/12/2017 08:22 | Morning guys, I hope you are all well and looking forward to the Christmas break. Does anyone have any idea about the news from LCG this morning? Could this lead to a delisting from AIM altogether? Thanks | professor x
13/12/2017 06:58 | Good Morning. My SIPP finished up 0.72%. I see we have yet another tickable box! | skinny
12/12/2017 18:22 | +0.24% for the Folio, [FTSE250 +0.04%] Highest value risers : ASY +6.7%, PFC +3.8%, BP +2.5% Worst value fallers : GVC -2.7%, BMS -4.8%, BGO -3.5%. PFC won a significant oil services contract from BP in Oman, boosting sp, while ASY share price probably responding to current weather conditions. Just -4C in this locality early this morning. | blueliner
12/12/2017 18:01 | The electric grid looks comfotable enough now the wind has returned. | aleman
12/12/2017 17:40 | I'm up +0.417% on teh day today (FTSE100 +0.630%). Best rises: CLLN +6.06%, BP. +2.47% and ADM +2.37%. Worst falls: MARS -1.98%, WMH -1.43% and TW. -1.18%. Austrian explosion and Forties pipeline crack, plus the cold weather have pushed up the price of oil and gas, helping the oil chares. -6°C this morning, rising to about -1°C after lunch. Frost on the grass and roofs out of the sun stayed in place. Got the sheepskin jacket out. Not yet the fur hat. Our lane was very icy first thing, but the sun and traffic cleared most of it.
