30/5/2017 10:51 | Saw some house martins and swallows apparently trying to nestbuild this morning. Not a lot of mud about for them, but the recent rain may have helped a bit. Also the odd swift, so must be a few insects about for them to feed on. | deanforester
30/5/2017 10:09 | Aleman, we do have a few of these dotted around and the bees certainly do love those, but their favourites at the moment seem to be the various foxgloves we have out plus the Canterbury Bells and of course the Echium The SIPP has actually just turned positive on the day with CTO the top riser. | mrphil
30/5/2017 09:40 | Good morning, all. I've identified our magenta flowers, except they started out violet this year but some seem to be coming out redder now. It's a hybrid of which there are be many similar but is very like to the more common purple cranesbill (geranium x magnificum) but has different leaves and tends to be a bit redder in photos, possibly with a denser array of flower heads and looking tidier at the edges of beds. If you want to attract bees, these are what you want. They love them, with large numbers taking their time, performing a gentle dance routine across the top of the bed. They started flowering last week. We just had odd bees for a day or two but it's now 5 or 6 at a time. Last year it built up to maybe 50 at a time, of several species. The kids played with the bees but never got stung as the bees some far more interested in just moving on to the next flower. No maintenance needed, very pretty and attract bees. Ours have scarlet leaves in the autumn. Bit floppy at the edges and vulnerable to wind (but tends to recover) so better in blocks rather than in walls or pots - I recommend! | aleman
27/5/2017 15:39 | Growth didn't strengthen. The estimate did. It still weakened compared to Q4 but the error is still very high at this stage (perhaps +/-4%) so we don;t actually know what it did. We did indeed get a mid-afternoon storm. The wind was very turbulent if the rain was modest. The temperature dropped 5C but is creeping back up. | aleman
27/5/2017 13:55 | Warm but had a heavy thundercloud mid morning with a deluge, dried up quite quickly. US growth still seems to be strengthening. | freddie ferret
27/5/2017 13:39 | We had a 2 minute shower but you would no know it now. It was forecasted to be a degree cooler but it's two degrees hotter and a bit sticky with it. Annoyingly, I put the paddling pool away last night on the forecast of rain at 9am and then again at 3pm but I wish I had not as it's getting uncomfortable now. 27.7C. | aleman
27/5/2017 13:14 | USA Mortgage delinquencies are down ... but home equity loan (HELOC) defaults are up sharply These credit lines have a 10-year "draw period," when borrowers are required only to pay interest on the loans. After 10 years, the loans "reset," and borrowers must start paying principal, which can more than double the monthly payment. That caused huge jumps in home equity line delinquencies, which were up 74 percent last year, according to mortgage data firm Black Knight Financial Services. 27/5/2017 09:53 | Morning Hardly a gain worth mentioning Fri but.. Highest value risers : GVC +3.8%, HSD +6.1%, GSK +1.6%. Worst value fallers : CSN -3.6%, SDI -13.2%, CLIG -1.7%. +1.04 for the week, Folio YTD +9.5%. Have a good break. | blueliner
26/5/2017 17:45 | I'm up +0.190% on teh day today (FTSE100 +0.398%), up +0.61% on the week (FTSE100 +1.03%) and up +7.81% YTD (FTSE100 +5.67% and HIX +3.68%). Best rises: BATS +1.75%, GSK +1.58% and SMDS +1.46%. Worst falls: TATE -2.2%, LLOY -1.86% and UU. -1.80%. TATE and UU. continued to fall after yesterday's rsults. I see that RB. is at an all-time high, like the market. Got my grass cut today. The mower needed encouragement to start, and I took the precaution of tying the ignition cut-out lever to the handle, so that I could leave it running while I emptied the grass box. A very warm job in the sun. I felt exhausted afterwards. MrP, get those showers out of the way quickly so that the ODI at the Aegeas Bowl can get underway on time. Enjoy the weekend and the Bank Holiday. I think that we should revert to Whit Monday. DF | deanforester
26/5/2017 17:39 | +0.1%. YTD -5.0%. 26.9C and turning slightly humid as we start to get some small clouds. Have a good weekend and enjoy your breaks, if you're getting one. | aleman
26/5/2017 17:01 | Not a good day today, and the individual shares in the SIPP didn't have a great week. Despite that, SIPP +0.78% and now +4.89% YTD, pot +0.39% and now +9.25% YTD and the Virgin ISA +1.01% and is now +8.12% YTD Enjoy your weekends, between the showers! MrP | mrphil
26/5/2017 15:29 | Well done wllm, good luck with PETS! I see the managed funds have outperformed the individual shares in the SIPP again this week, +1.66% on the week! | mrphil
26/5/2017 15:16 | MrP, I bought PETS today after reading their results, I couldn't see why they prompted a sell off. Seemed a mildly positive set of results so hoping for a bit of a recovery whilst I bag the dividend. They go ex dividend on my wedding anniversary too so that sealed the deal.......I know, I'm a romantic old fool :) Have a nice weekend everyone, currently 26 degrees here in East Scotland. wllm | wllmherk
26/5/2017 08:24 | Seeing PETS now showing a 25% overall loss in the SIPP (excluding divis) it's tempting to just cut my losses, but another side of me is saying this is a good opportunity to average down. | mrphil
26/5/2017 08:19 | Morning All. We hit 26.1C yesterday which only dropped to 13.3°C last night. Had tea on board last night which was extremely pleasant. Very disappointed to see the change in the forecast with rain showers throughout tomorrow morning and again on Sunday, especially as we had decided to stay on board over the weekend. Such beautiful weather during the working week, seems so unfair sometimes! | mrphil
25/5/2017 21:34 | +0.94% for me today, almost solely down to ICP which finished the day +14%. I've had my best day value-wise since 24th April and even VED rose today. :-) The wooden spoon goes to Cineworld as the biggest value faller but it has performed very well for me this year so I do not mind today's fall. EDIT: I've just seen that Cineworld has gone Ex-Dividend today and the dividend accounts for almost the entirety of the fall. :-) Looking across the portfolio, Risers outpaced fallers by a ratio of nearly 3:2. I enjoyed a nice evening meal with work colleagues and the air-conditioning was most welcome, it is rather hot and sticky now I am back home. spittingbarrel, I am total agreement with you that it is better to buy the underlying which gives you your total exposure. I think too many people bet under margin and do not fully understand the risk they are taking. | hyden
25/5/2017 19:08 | Aleman - I used www.bitstamp.net I it is simpler and quicker to use www.bittylicious.com but slightly more expensive. Alternatively you can use IG index for a spread bet but I think it's better to buy the real thing with money you are prepared to write off. | spittingbarrel
25/5/2017 18:06 | +0.2% for me. 26.7C. It got over 31C in the house and might be even warmer upstairs so it could be a sticky night. | aleman
25/5/2017 18:02 | Slightly up today, even with some puzzling smallcap falls mainly dropping bid prices. [FTSE250 +0.09%] Highest value riser : GVC +2.2%. Worst value fallers : MANX -5.3%, HSD -3.1%, MCL -3.7%. GVC hit £8 with some exuberance early doors then predictably fell back, not before I took a few more off the table. Tempus had BAB & HICL as buys this morning, which made me buy todays Times...... heartrending stories. Temp 27C max | blueliner
25/5/2017 17:59 | I'm down -0.122% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.037%). Worst falls: TATE -5.19%, MARS -2.1% XD and BP. -1.13%. Best rises: S32 +2.94%, TSCO +1.52% and ULVR +1.35%. Don't know why TATE upset the market so much. It didn't read that badly to me. It has been a nice almost cloudless day. I haven't looked at the thermometer, but it has been warm. A bit too warm for gardening by my somnolent self. Onward to tomorrow. DF | deanforester
25/5/2017 17:56 | UK 10 year gilt yield is 1.03%, down from over 1.4% at the start of February. | aleman |
