It's all going to kick off in London as the media whip up hysteria. Unfortunately those that follow the religion of peace don't need encouragement to turn violent.
Perhaps if our Politicians had tackled mass immigration where in the region of 300,000 people come to the UK each year we wouldn't have the housing problems we have today.

Corbyn is a dangerous man, should be locked up IMO.

Really starting to get lots of colour in the garden which is a great pleasure after all the horrible things going on in the world.

It's fair to say this "empty property" lark is a bit of a red herring, especially when one looks at London. I'm not convinced too many high rise residents would ordinarily afford to live in some of these expensive empty properties, but it's a great vote winner for Corbyn to have another bash at the top 5%! I couldn't afford a big house in London but presumably if I wanted to it would be OK to requisition one of these mansions?

Mozy - You don't have to pay the tax, you can rent the property out or sell it.

50% - you might as well call it theft. If you support theft from private individuals under the name of socialism then shame on you.

2/7 for me. Folio stocks rebounding partially this am, not convinced though that the political climate is at all business as usual. Expecting further gyrations.

Put some kind of investment/empty property tax proposal as above in the Queens speech, which incidentally will have to be damn good to stave off further gov't upheavals.

MRPHIL - Perhaps a tax of 50% of the value of the property every year that the property is empty would do the trick.

I got 4/7, how did you find 8 questions?

spittingbarrel, I totally agree something needs to be done about the law to prevent more people buying properties and leaving them empty, but if the law at the time allowed someone to buy a property and leave it empty if they so wish, you can't then just change your mind and steal it from them! But maybe there could be a "charge" levied on unoccupied properties and that money used to fund new builds or upgrades of existing under-utilised publicly owned stock?

MRPHIL - I disagree re Corbyn, something needs to be done about the empty properties in London owned by foreigners purely as an investment. Properties should be built for living in, not purely for investment, and we have an acute housing shortage in London (and elsewhere), so if this is the catalyst to change the law then I welcome it.

Morning All.

I also scored 5/8 on the quiz, mostly guesses as usual!

Corbyn certainly likes to come up with some great sounding plans for the masses, but does he not understand the concept of stealing? You just can't pinch other people's stuff just because you think you have a better use for it! If there are council owned properties lying empty then that's a different matter and I would tend to agree with him on those.

I was lucky to have AGL jumping yesterday. I think they were the only riser but they did reduce the fall by about 20% on their own.

Shocking fall today, -1.98%. It is my worst day on the markets since the Brexit fallout on 27th June last year.

Tuesday's sales saved me from an additional 0.1% fall but that is the only ray of sunshine. Only 4 stocks (out of 47) rose. POG is the best value riser and ICP the worst value faller.

In an attempt to shine a positive light on the markets, I venture that at least days like this help curb my enthusiasm and that has to be a good thing. :-)

I had high hopes of a nice bicycle ride this evening but alas it was spoiled by a bent chain link. The gears kept on slipping and it didn't take too long to identify the cause. How on earth did I manage to bend one of my chain links! Never mind, easily fixed and the early identification has hopefully saved from a much more expensive repair bill. :-)

-1.22%, well stitched up, though FTSE250 -2.11% was worse.

Worst value fallers : IGR -3.7%, PEW -3.6%, PHNX -2.2%, CLIG -2.5%, GVC -2.4%.

Highest value riser : PFC +3.9%.

MARS looks good for a top up, was out pm so missed the plunge opportunity.

A day of three halves, sunny at first still humid, gradually increasing cloudier conditions with freshening wind, then the 'front' passed over with a light sprinkling lasting 5 mins, then the clearance, brilliant blue skies with summer clouds. Only in June, max 21C.

Traffic around London Bridge awful, 3 hours for a 1.5 hour trip!

Investments really suffered today, that's all I can say!

I'm down -1.280% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.736%).

Worst falls: MKS -4.74%, S32 -4.71% and INDV -3.42%.

Only two rose: ULVR +0.19% and LLOY +0.13%. Smallest fall: GSK -0.03%.

They say it's all down to the MPC. If the Fed can begin raising interest rates, it's time the BofE did so, especially after an unnecessary cut. Don't you have to work well in advance of the inflation rise, so that it catches it in time? It's already above the 2% limit, and the RPI is up 3.8%. If HMG doesn't want to borrow any more at higher rates, the solution is in its own hands. They should have bitten the bullet in 2010, either cutting Civil Service numbers or cutting pay rates, to get the economy back into balance. You can't have the penny and the bun.

A good talk at Probus today, on preserved railways. He covered a lot of ground.

Now I know why bank shares are up as others have dipped sharply. (Imgine where the indices would be if banks had fallen, too.)
