Better day, albeit the SIPP ended with half the gain it had mid afternoon +0.27% with SSE, BP. & WTB the top risers. The pot jumped by +0.93% with FDI benefiting from digging up a 110 carat yellow diamond! Also rising were AIEA & RR.

Think we'll go for a stroll round our local roads picking up litter tonight. Really should send a bill to the council!

A small but growing group of hedge funds are positioning themselves to profit from the collapse of the real estate market. Sounds like 2007, right? It’s actually happening right now.

But this time, hedge funds (along with Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley) aren’t targeting subprime mortgages—they’re going after commercial real estate.

Have ratings agencies been too lenient on CMBSs again?

Jump in office loan delinquenices drives the overall delinquneciy rate for CMBSs up in February.

Australia has had the fastest house price growth in the developed world since the last crash. Is the reason exploding levels of interest only loans, which are now being tightened up?

Only managed 1.1687 just now against the euro, not as good as Friday when I got over 1.17 and I still need a few more!

Received solar pv statement from SSE today, generated 414kwh in the last quarter which is pretty good for Jan-Mar with only 10 panels.

I see Manchester B.Soc are reducing the rate on our Business Saver account from the current 0.75% down to 0.5% from 2nd May. Not sure what the justification is when Aldermore are still offering 0.85%

Just had a quick look to see the average rates we achieved throughout each year based on the amounts we bought and the rates prevailing at that time. I obviously try and buy when the rates are good rather than when we need the euros!

Car tax changes lead to bumper March new car sales (private +4.4%, fleet +12.6%) but low sales are expected in April, due to Easter as well as car tax. 2017 is expected to be down slightly on 2016.

Despite stronger March numbers, Markit indicate GDP around 0.4% for Q1, after a weak February. I would say weakening trends in many sectors suggest Q2 will be significantly weaker than Q1. I think the next recession could start in Q2, perhaps depending on what £ and oil do.

And more fuss about sterling when the £ is STILL in the middle of a range against the $ and Euro that it has been in for 6 months - it's been unusually stable! Tell us when something changes.

Strange:

How can services be so strong when so many retailers, ad/marketing, and dining/restaurant and other consumer companies have been reporting slowing growth. Mind you, I read that the services PMI does not include retail, which is 60% the services sector of UK GDP. I've not been able to find any detail on this, though.

Shadowside - you're welcome.

I gather fruit trees have a dormancy period so the time they flower is affected as much by when winter starts as when it ends, both being early this last time. The question is, if winter started and finished early, does that reduce the risk of a late cold snap? If only Bill Foggitt were still with us. UK sea temperatures look slightly warmer than average. Hopefully, that will help deter late frost slightly.

Always nice to see a business thirve from giving customers what they want, MrP.

Morning All.

Beautiful sunshine at the moment after a chilly 5°C early on. Hopefully the iBoost will put plenty into the immersion heater today so the boiler won't have much to do when it comes on tonight.

Shadowside, we're doing the Hurtigruten boat, Kirkenes to Bergen. I think they are mainly short stops?

Pleasant start for the SIPP but then so was yesterday and it ended the day down!

Back from a week visiting friends in the South of France so lots of catching up to do in garden. Everything at least a week ahead of last year and maybe a little more.Pears and plums in flower and first apple tree only days away. Just hope we dont have any late hard frosts. Peas and broad beans in polytunnel covered in flowers as are strawberries in greenhouse. First tomato flowering as well.

Flew Ryanair to France which was a pleasant surprise. Cheap, ontime and less bureaucratic about luggage. If I was BA I would be worried. They were my last choice as airline but based on this experience would be at number one.

Enjoy Norway Mr P. I had a couple of weeks touring round last summer and loved it. Where are you going? We drove from Bergen to Alesund, Fjord hopping, and then back via the coast road. A tad expensive but not that much worse than other places in Northern Europe. Alcohol is the killer but they have duty free shops on the way in so we used those to stock up. Found our favourite sparkling wine ( Pongraz from South Africa) at a cheaper price than we can buy in UK. You can also buy wine/beer in the State Vinopol shops at a reasonable price.

Saw a fancy Techno weather station at our friends house so treated myself to one. Not much additional information to that which I already had but all in one place and looks neat. Does have a weather forecasting icon. Currently BBC says cloud the Techno says sun and the suns shining so will see how it compares over time.

Thanks for the economic updates Aleman. The car market does look as if its teetering on both sides of the pond. I wonder what the impact of increased vehicle reliability/durability is? My XF is 8 years old and as good as new. The only cars I have kept to the equivalent age were my first Triumph Herald and my last Saab 9000 and both of those were in much worse shape after 8 years. The petrol tank fell off the Saab after 7 due to retaining straps rusting through!!

I found reports that Southest and South Central were warmest since 1957 but not CET - maybe I just need to look a bit harder. Undoubtedly it was a hot month in most places in the UK. London had its warmest March except for the previous one!

What I did find interesting is that Wetherbell show the northernmost part of Scotland to be below the 1981-2010 average and some parts of the highlands to be around average while the Met Office show both to be warmer than 1981-2010. I find these regular disagreemnts make me very sceptical of all the claims that are made.

Aleman, bad luck with the tomato plant, you did very well to get it this far! If it's any help, we grow our strawberries in long troughs and have them sitting on the sleepers that form the raised bed. The Raspberries are in the open ground but you have to be prepared for them to spread and come up all over the place, and they will need some cane supports, preferably with string between.

+0.4%.

It's been sunny since about 2pm so the afternoon has been pleasant. 15.4C

My last tomato stem died. Despite watering every day once outside, it seemed to quickly dehydrate. Hardly any of my smaller narcissi flowered this year. I must not mow the remaining leaves down so soon this year. We've been given some strawberry and raspberry plants by friends that are moving house so I can learn to kill those this year!
