28/3/2017 18:46 | +0.35%, [FTSE250 +0.28%]. First thunderstorm of 2017 here. Highest value risers : BGO +3.7%, CLIG +2.5%, BLT +2.5%, BA. +1.5%. Worst value fallers : BRSN -2.1%, GVC -1%. An increased BLT Interim div received today [40 cents ps], worked out at $1.2125 into sterling, v welcome, must boost BRWM. payments. Watched first of new series of 'Line of Duty' on iPlayer, excellent. | blueliner
28/3/2017 17:32 | Well on a day when the ftse did OK there weren't really any real positive movers in the SIPP so the antics at CTO actually caused a fall of -0.13% with SSE & LLOY rubbing salt into the wounds. The pot managed an acceptable +0.54% gain thanks to AMS, RDSB & RR. Not much on the TV tonight so a chance to catch up on some recorded programs. | mrphil
28/3/2017 16:16 | CTO dropped on decent results. LLOY Senior Economist seems to share my view that the pound is far lower than it should be and expects a recovery. Also expecting inflation to peak at between 3 - 3.5% sometime next year before dropping back, provided wages don't increase too much. Regarding housing prices, other than London the prices are not high compared to multiples of income or percentage of wages going on Mortgage payments. Of course, a lot of fairly recent home owners know no different and will get a shock once interest rates start rising towards more realistic levels, but that's unlikely in the foreseeable future. | mrphil
28/3/2017 15:47 | Hard data and soft data seem to be further apart than ever. US consumer confidence soars in February when all those companies were issuing weak upates and revising guidance downwards? Yeah, right. I see Tasty, the owner of the Wildwood restaurant chain and DimT, has seen its shares fall 40% today due to results announcing weak trading since year end hitting its expansion plans. No doubt consumer confidence is going through the roof here, as well. As a more southern-based chain, that suggests it is no longer just poorer northern working class areas where things are less busy.. And while on food chains, something I often wonder about: | aleman
28/3/2017 15:23 | I'll be off to London shortly. Will post my usual comments later tonight. Another nice day, although only +2°C first thing. DF | deanforester
28/3/2017 12:50 | I'm still a bit shocked by S&U. Here is a write-up of their numbers. Nowhere does it mention the 85% rise in already significant late payers! H ttp://www.proactivei | aleman
28/3/2017 09:49 | Unusually, I've posted on the S&U thread. The shares opened up today yet the cashflow note shows a £27m profit turned into a £27m OUTFLOW of cash from operations mainly because customer receivables increased by a whopping £48m. It beats me how the UK can not be in recession if so many borrowers are not paying back. It's worse than some of the the US numbers I've been seeing. | aleman
28/3/2017 08:08 | Morning All. Another bright sunny start which is a pleasant surprise after not such a good forecast. Looks like a couple of larger projects have been picked up by contractors not known to us. The latest one warrants a credit limit of around a tenth of the value of the order so I think it's pro-forma or go through a distributor! I don't intend to get caught out as and when credit tightens and businesses struggle. Off to the latest Lloyds Economic Update event this morning, could be interesting. Not heard this particular guy before but their previous senior economist was excellent. | mrphil
28/3/2017 07:54 | Ostensibly good annual results from S&U (car loans) with revenue up 34% and earnings up 28% but impaired loans up to 3 month past due rose from 6.3% to 8.9%. 3-6 months went from 0.9% to 1.1% and over 6 months went from 1.3% to 1.8%. Total impaired goes from 8.4% to 11.8%. I'd be worried if my company was expanding so hard into a marketplace where delinqueencies rates were up 40% in relative terms and 85% in absolute terms in just a year! It looks like a train wreck and what is it saying about UK borrowers and consumers? | aleman
28/3/2017 06:01 | Good Morning. My SIPP finished down 0.46% A lovely lunch yesterday for my daughter's birthday, followed by an afternoon of "leisure" in the garden. | skinny
27/3/2017 19:54 | -0.42% also - overcast, only got to 7C max here, heating turned up. Worst value fallers : BLT -3.9%, BRWM -3.3%, BRSN -2.2%, BA. -1.8%, BAB -4.3%. Highest value risers : IGR +3%, BGO +5.1%. Yet another day & another broker downgrade for BRSN, much of it deserved regretfully. IGR, a day of 2 halves. It's not mathematically impossible for Notts County to be relegated but gets more unlikely each week with the new owner & new manager turning it round. Relief! | blueliner
27/3/2017 17:56 | I'm down -0.422% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.590%). Worst falls: BLT -3.86%, RIO -3.85% and S32 -1.97%. Best rises: AZN +0.93%, MKS +0.81% and TW. +0.63%. A bad day for the miners. I have spent the afternoon in the garden, removing brambles. Got two bags full and just got to the dump before they closed. A lovely day. DF | deanforester
27/3/2017 17:11 | freddie ;-) | mrphil
27/3/2017 17:10 | -0.7% for me. A cold grey day, typically 9C or so, but is is getting slightly brighter and warner now. Russell 2000 index of US smaller companies looking headed for its lowest of 2017. | aleman
27/3/2017 16:58 | W o WSt must have been cut or tamed to be shown no main stream TV imho, good film however, make sure Mum has gone to bed first. | freddie ferret
27/3/2017 16:53 | Well it's been another lovely day with wall to wall sunshine after a fresh 5.4°C start first thing. Not so much blue on the screen though :-( SIPP -0.45% LLOY, BRCI & BP. and the pot -0.74% LLOY, AMS & RR. Broadchurch tonight and I see Wolf of Wall Street is on Film 4 later. | mrphil
27/3/2017 16:50 | If my memory serves me right sulphamic acid used to be available as a kettle descaler. Poor day for me. Weather, still cool in the shade, but otherwise sunny. Forecasting better over the next few days. Douglas Carswell has left UKIP, no surprises there. More interesting is the fact that he has not rejoined the Conservatives as had been expected. The election expenses scandals are still hanging over the Conservatives from the last general election, they look like crime to me and I am expecting an emergency general election to be called over the next few months. Basically if the govt looses its majority then the fixed term has to go out of the window. I actually think May may desire an election to get herself a safe majority. The budget was an election budget and is not viable for the long term, more needed to be raised in taxes and spending cut to even begin to get the national debt sustainable in the long term. | freddie ferret
27/3/2017 14:37 | A compost accelerator sounds pretty organic to me! | shadowside
27/3/2017 14:31 | Thanks Shadowside. I'll mention it to the "boss" but I doubt she will allow ANY chemical anywhere near the allotment! I admire her will, but I don't think I could be that strict with my willpower! | mrphil
27/3/2017 14:20 | Mr P, Ammonium Sulphamate is very effective against mares tail.Much better than glypophosphate. Its not available in the EU as a herbicide due to some bureaucratic issue over licensing but can be bought online as a compost accelerator! I guess you can try digging it up but as the roots go down to about 8 feet that can be a challenge. | shadowside
27/3/2017 11:58 | We have sown plenty of seeds; beans, peas, carrots as well as lots of flowers - various Cosmos, Tagetes, Gaillardia, Red/Blue Poppy, Dwarf Marigold but will wait with the Sunflowers until close to our week away in early April. I gather the better half has planted the potatoes in the allotment this morning but found a few signs of Mare's Tail which will need dealing with before they start spreading their spores. SIPP still looking grim although looking slightly less painful than earlier. | mrphil
27/3/2017 11:32 | Looks like markets are approaching an interesting time. I thought it was blindingly obvious from the outset that Trump was never going to get a deficit busting budget through the right wing of the republican party but the health care debacle seems to have woken people up. Interestingly Trump would have a much better chance of implementing his budget with an alliance of Democrats and moderate Republicans. Has any President ever changed sides whilst in office? Assume there is nothing in the Constitution that stops him? Would make for interesting politics. Lovely weekend in the garden up here as well. First Asparagus shoots showing this morning which is several weeks ahead of last year. This will be the third year so should be able to take a full crop. I am into the third year of a 5 year gardening diary which allows side by side weekly comparisons and is proving very useful timing sowings etc. First earlies ( Duke of York) went in at the weekend and long range weather looks so encouraging that I put most of the 2nd earlies ( Charlotte) in as well.May struggle a bit if we have a late frost but have plenty of fleece. | shadowside |
