27/3/2017 11:58 | We have sown plenty of seeds; beans, peas, carrots as well as lots of flowers - various Cosmos, Tagetes, Gaillardia, Red/Blue Poppy, Dwarf Marigold but will wait with the Sunflowers until close to our week away in early April. I gather the better half has planted the potatoes in the allotment this morning but found a few signs of Mare's Tail which will need dealing with before they start spreading their spores. SIPP still looking grim although looking slightly less painful than earlier. | mrphil
27/3/2017 11:32 | Looks like markets are approaching an interesting time. I thought it was blindingly obvious from the outset that Trump was never going to get a deficit busting budget through the right wing of the republican party but the health care debacle seems to have woken people up. Interestingly Trump would have a much better chance of implementing his budget with an alliance of Democrats and moderate Republicans. Has any President ever changed sides whilst in office? Assume there is nothing in the Constitution that stops him? Would make for interesting politics. Lovely weekend in the garden up here as well. First Asparagus shoots showing this morning which is several weeks ahead of last year. This will be the third year so should be able to take a full crop. I am into the third year of a 5 year gardening diary which allows side by side weekly comparisons and is proving very useful timing sowings etc. First earlies ( Duke of York) went in at the weekend and long range weather looks so encouraging that I put most of the 2nd earlies ( Charlotte) in as well.May struggle a bit if we have a late frost but have plenty of fleece. | shadowside
27/3/2017 10:41 | S&P 500 12-month trailing p/e 21.6 versus 10 year average of 16.9. | aleman
27/3/2017 10:06 | Good Morning , all. No.2 at home with fever now. Calpol seems to be working for him. Yet another US retailer reporting very poor Q4 numbers: It looks like the US, has a techcnical change going through soon which will add to pressure on consumers purses: | aleman
25/3/2017 15:53 | Had to take No.3 to hospital yesterday but no harm done and back to normal today. Could do with a bit of catch-up sleep though. Glorious day, today. 13.0C and sunny. Felt warmer in dry air after a hard frost and -0.8C last night. We had a slight frost the previous night. +0.2% yesterday but still a poor week. YTD -5.8%. An old article but highlights the similar issues between US and UK car market financing. | aleman
25/3/2017 09:10 | Morning, ideal walking weather, wall to wall yesterday & today it seems. Quiz average 4/7. +0.37% yesterday, tremendous update from IGR, been worth holding all the way, lifted Folio. Highest value risers : IGR +15.3%, BGO +5.4%. Worst value faller : CLIG -4.2%. Just -0.16% on the week, Folio YTD + 3.81%. Enjoy the sunshine. | blueliner
24/3/2017 17:33 | Phil. There has been a lot in the papers on this and the view is that Isis while claiming that the guy was inspired by them, that they actually had no prior knowledge of the event or previous knowledge of him. To put this in context, this about as serious as a bad motorway pile up, half a dozen dead and a couple of dozen in hospital with injuries. Again a few years back while traveling by mini bus in Georgia between Tiblisi and Kazbegi on the military highway we passed and stopped at the point where a coach had come of the road, 39 killed as the coach rolled down the mountainside breaking up. The bodies were recovered, bits of the coach can still be seen. | freddie ferret
24/3/2017 17:31 | Well done Andrew Neil! That R4 programme does sound interesting, must try and find time to listen! | mrphil
24/3/2017 17:25 | I normally can't stand the man, but - | skinny
24/3/2017 17:24 | freddie, if it had been reported as "some nut job went mad and murdered some innocent people" I just wonder whether ISIS would have bothered to "claim" the bloke as one of their "soldiers"? Soldier my ar*e | mrphil
24/3/2017 17:23 | My SIPP finished down 0.04%, -0.30% on the week and is +4.13% YTD. A grey cold start, with the sun finally turning up about 3 O'Clock @14°C. London tomorrow with the grandchildren for the Lego store - oh joy! :-) Enjoy your weekend. | skinny
24/3/2017 17:21 | Shadowside, something I have considered but never got around to! | mrphil
24/3/2017 17:18 | Very similar picture for me following the market down for a loss of 0.9% on the week taking me to +2.3% YTD. Lovely day in the garden with lots of sunshine and much less wind than yesterday. Looks as if tomorrow will be similar and then goes downhill. Hard overnight frost last night and forecast again tonight. Had a tooth out on tuesday and replaced with implant. Previously they have left a couple of months between out and in but apparently current best practice is to do it at the same time. Makes for an unpleasant visit but gets it over with quickly. Have been like a lopsided chipmunk since but beginning to get back to normal. The joys of ageing! Enjoy your weekends S | shadowside
24/3/2017 16:56 | Rubbish week all around. SIPP -1.30%, pot -0.80% and the Virgin ISA -0.61% reducing the YTD figures down to +2.14%, +2.60% and +3.08% so the best performing part of the investments is actually the managed funds within the SIPP which are collectively currently running at +4.97% Red Nose all evening but I'm afraid I'm all burnt out from hearing too much about that throughout the whole year. Not arguing they do a lot of good, but it's just endless these days, every time somebody runs around the block it's in aid of Comic Relief! Supposed to be wall to wall sunshine tomorrow but a cool breeze, so not too sure whether we'll brave the water! Family gatherings on Sunday. Enjoy your weekends. MrP | mrphil
24/3/2017 11:55 | 3/7 for me. Better than last week's 1/7, but I actally knew one of the answers. DF | deanforester
24/3/2017 11:20 | Been going through the performance of the Virgin ISA over the past few years and to be honest it has been pretty poor. Decided to start a new ISA with HL from April and, after seeing this, have decided to transfer everything from Virgin as well Not that there is much left in there as I keep raiding it! | mrphil
24/3/2017 10:30 | Aleman, I see what you mean with IGR. I sold out back in 2015 at 145p which now looks like a pretty poor decision! | mrphil
24/3/2017 09:18 | Nice update for IGR. It seems I sold out too early. I've done that with a few recently. 7 units still shut at that shopping centre so a couple filled. Traffic was busy after quiz last night with plenty of HGVs. | aleman
