28/2/2017 07:55 | Bad luck with those two, bl. Lots of results today. Most seem good on a quick skim ... and yet: From Go Ahead: Our expectations for the full year have lowered in both bus and rail. Our expectations for full year regional bus division profitability have lowered as a result of the slowdown in passenger volumes across the business, most notably in the north east and Oxford. Performance in our London bus business is in line with expectations for the full year although securing profitable growth in this market, as always, remains challenging. In rail, the long-running industrial relations issues in GTR have introduced additional costs and delays to expected efficiencies which will result in lower than anticipated profits in the full year. In the US Hertz stood out from a steady stream of misses. Car rental os more bout residuals than renting. Get a bulk discount and sometimes sell the used car at a profit after renting covers costs. Hertz had a bad year and then missed low expectations in Q4 as residuals declined sharply. Why are used car prices falling sharply? Several small US car retailers have mossed forecasts in recent weeks. Hertz shares closed UP a smidgeon. Markets seem crazy at the moment. | aleman
27/2/2017 17:34 | I'm up +0.184% on teh day today (FTSE100 +0.128%). Best rises: IMI +3.1%, CLLN +2.9% then S32 and ULVR, both +1.5%. Worst falls: ADM -2.5%, WMH -1.2% and SSE -1.1%. This negative interest rate for insurance payments seems a strange move. Presumably down to the return on I-L Gilts. CLLN report tomorrow, and should be interesting. Just booked a short cruise for the summer, down to El Ferrol and back, 7 nights on Oriana. Mrs DF also has her eyes on a River Cruise. London tomorrow evening, provided my cough has subsided a bit more. DF | deanforester
27/2/2017 17:10 | SIPP -0.02% SSE, INTU & AGL and the pot -0.23% AMS, AIEA & DC. Madness indeed Aleman. That one is odd as it looks small in the picture but they claim it's 2,235 sq ft which isn't a bad size. Looking forward to the New Broadchurch tonight Skinny. | mrphil
27/2/2017 16:54 | My SIPP finished up 0.10%. A mainly wet day @10°C. New Broadchurch tonight. I assume there will be a second series of Taboo? | skinny
27/2/2017 16:43 | This one is up north and looks nearly as bad. | aleman
27/2/2017 16:41 | It is madness that you can have that residence for virtually the same as the broom cupboards I posted. | skinny
27/2/2017 16:31 | If you get 6 or 7 people in modern 5 bed house (two doubles and 3 singles), where do they all spend the day when the living and garden areas look tiny? I thought it was a semi, MrP. Maybe not strictly comparable. The contrast between north and south is bigger than ever, as that highlights, but difference between poor and wealthy areas up north is growing in an increasingly divided nation. | aleman
27/2/2017 16:20 | And the funny thing is, people are getting bigger so how on earth are they going to squeeze into these ever smaller rooms?! Aleman, that place does look good, but looking at the floorplans I presume it's just part of that house in the picture? | mrphil
27/2/2017 16:16 | Or the down stairs bedroom..... :-) | skinny
27/2/2017 16:14 | Aleman, I think I would just call it a coat cupboard and save any embarrassment! | mrphil
27/2/2017 16:10 | Regarding car insurance for younger drivers, we really do need to do something about it. Maybe they should be limited to the lowest power vehicles only, maybe for their first year. That way, they should be able to do less damage so hopefully the claims would be lower value? | mrphil
27/2/2017 16:08 | And why do they call toilets cloakrooms? We have a room by the front door for coats, umbrellas, shoes and the like? I ask visitors if they want to put their coat in the cloakroom and they look at me oddly! | aleman
27/2/2017 16:07 | Shadowside, I believe we have the smallest houses amongst most of the main countries in Europe. I can't believe how many rooms we seem to cram into a small property. | mrphil
27/2/2017 16:03 | Mr P. You beat me to it! But I'm a long way away! | shadowside
27/2/2017 16:03 | Quite wllmherk - my youngest's insurance at 17 was £2000 - ten years ago. | skinny
27/2/2017 16:02 | One of the upstairs bedrooms is smaller than the downstairs loo and to call it a bedroom is a pretty big stretch of the imagination. Ridiculous. | shadowside
27/2/2017 16:00 | Skinny, looks like the houses around here are cheap by comparison then! Couldn't believe this bit "Bedroom Three: 7'5" x 5'8"!!" | mrphil
27/2/2017 15:57 | Crikey, MrP! Try this for 12% less up north: twice the floor area - and just a bit of character. | aleman
27/2/2017 15:50 | thanks skinny, I read that for young drivers premiums could rise by £1000, quite frankly, that is ridiculous, I'm not sure how those on lower incomes will be able to afford such rises, we may see an upsurge in uninsured drivers. wllm | wllmherk
27/2/2017 15:40 | MrP - that's true of many new houses - cleverly designed but ingenuous (not) in their total lack of storage space. A pair of semis built on the end of a garden locally - all very nice but totally impractical as family homes - and look at the prices! And remember they are a semis! | skinny
27/2/2017 15:30 | My stocks are generally doing ok today, except for DLG one of my larger holdings. Therefore, I'm going to be in negative territory overall today. I guess this will mean higher premiums for all of us, couldn't have come at a worst time as my son is 17 and about to start driving lessons, the joys of parenthood :( wllm | wllmherk
27/2/2017 15:27 | Well there is no sign of the housing bubble bursting around here yet if our visit to a show home yesterday is anything to go by. One of the many new housing developments going on around here. we looked inside the Winchester which was very nice but when you looked closely there is no storage space. Only one of the bedrooms has a built in wardrobe, the "utility" room is actually the downstairs loo, and the garden would just about fit a rotary clothes line! Yours for £711,950 | mrphil |
