27/2/2017 14:38 | Skinny, that Chromecast gizmo looks interesting, although having said that I have never played any music on my iPhone and wouldn't really know how to. Do you have to pay for it? Aleman, agree our youngsters are going to grow up really unfit unless there is a drastic change. We don't let them out on their own for fear of something terrible happening to them so they end up stuck indoors on some sort of electronic game or computer. | mrphil

27/2/2017 13:27 | Non-life insurers down 1.5% on the discount rate ruling. I'm surprised it's not more. Maybe the market assumes people will just have to lump it and pay up. It probably hits everything else as hard. It will be yet another higher cost to hit consumers in the months ahead. | aleman
27/2/2017 13:07 | Our broadband keeps going slow or dropping out of late, which means constantly reconnecting which brings correct operation for minutes or hours, depending what mood BT is in. The fact that BT keep pestering us to upgrade to a more expensive faster service must be coincidence. The less on the internet, the better as far as I'm concerned. I have only one life and do not want to spend it all online and chasing up problems. Old stuff was slow but worked and did not need hours waiting in a call queue to talk to someone you cannot understand wo can't fix it. The trouble is that the internet is driven by young people that have yet to build up as many reponsibilities as some of the old farts. They might like surfing all day but it's building up a host of health issues. There is a growing school of thought that mental health issues are increasing, besides the obvious physical fitness problems. Less time online/surfing mobile, please - we are not designed for it! Lots of youngsters growing up with mental health issues will be everybody's problem. | aleman
27/2/2017 12:19 | MrP :-) I've just always liked new tech, albeit some of it is pointless. | skinny
27/2/2017 12:15 | Very impressed Skinny, may need to call on your services if ever we move out of the dark age! ;-) | mrphil
27/2/2017 11:59 | I use a Chromecast audio dongle with an audio jack to connect our old Sony stereo setup to WIFI - I then stream music via Spotify - effectively enabling any choice of music to be played on the trustee old setup - even the children were impressed. | skinny
27/2/2017 11:52 | Yes - we now just have the basic Sky 'Q' package on the main TV with an extra box on another tv - both also have 'smart' functionality. The first box gets the signal from the dish and thence to the main tv - it also relays it over WIFI to the second box - more importantly and the reason we have the second box, is is enables recorded material to be watched on the second tv without having to run cables/splitters which I've done in the past. The light app I don't get at all, but some apps - like the ability to set the Sky box to record a program when you are out, is very useful. I keep meaning to look at the Hive app, which allows you to play with the heating settings while on the move. | skinny
27/2/2017 11:41 | Oh I'm starting to get it now! Forgive my ignorance, we still basically watch BBC & ITV! So the "normal" channels still use your aerial/dish, it's only the iplayer/youtube stuff that uses the internet? Technology is certainly impressive these days although there are some things I just don't "get". One of my colleagues has just proudly told me how he has installed new lamps in his living room which he can turn on from his phone.....wouldn't it be easier to just stick your hand out as you walk in the room and turn on the switch? Why would you want to search for your phone to turn the light on where you are standing? I'm obviously missing something! | mrphil
27/2/2017 11:22 | It depends what you mean by "internet TV". Most tvs now have a "smart" element, which is basically has apps like your phone - IPlayer, Youtube and many more - these rely on the internet. They also have a Freeview and/or Freesat tuner - which picks up the signal via an aerial or dish - not internet reliant. I like the "smart" element as you can pump stuff from you phone/pc etc to any TV on the same network. To annoy/impress, I've pulled up in the car, connected to the home WIFI and "cast" a favourite track on youtube video to one of the the house TVS. I'm a bit of a tech lover, so perhaps I'm easily impressed. | skinny
27/2/2017 11:12 | Skinny, that monitor looks quite a beast! We were thinking the other evening as our broadband dropped out, if we had a new internet tv, I presume we would have lost all programs with the internet down? | mrphil
27/2/2017 10:27 | A nice gadget MrP - I'm still working on the . | skinny
27/2/2017 10:16 | The system for waste disposal of anything resembling commercial waste desperately needs reviewing. It is just too tempting for small traders to dump stuff by the side of the road as it's getting more and more difficult/expensive to dispose of it at the recycling centres. Surely it must be cheaper for councils to accept the stuff for free than spend thousands of pounds clearing it up from just about every lay by? On a more positive note, how about one of these? | mrphil
27/2/2017 10:06 | Good morning. The trend of increasing numbers of mindless idiots is disappointing but government is not doing much to make society more inclusive. I suggest a token payment out of the public purse, say £1 per hour, to youngsters of any age (and maybe to unemployed on top of benefits) for voluntary/charitable work. It might keep some off the streets and encourage more widespread attitude of helping others. Dull results from MCLS but a reasonable outlook. Not a bad thing with food import prices increasing. They are integrating a good-sized acquisition that should lad to a modest uptick in the generous dividend next year so dull will do. There are lots of other UK results that I have not had a good look at. They generally looked good with a couple of minor disappointments. Outlook statements will need some checking as higher import costs and a host of other minor cost increases start to take effect in March and April. (Increased phone charges are a new one sneaked in. Mobile phone contracts are generally fixed for a couple of years but small print has a clause for RPI increases which seem to be getting activated this spring for some reason. It's only one small increase but there are several together and they can add up to be signficant - particularly for those sectors already stressed, like small bricks and mortar retaiers.) Finally seen a few daffodils and crocuses out in favoured spots locally. Our own early ones have coloured up but not opened yet. The flurries of colour are very cheering, especially after a few grey days and now somw drizzle. My residual tomato plant is showing some signs of growth and looks set to make it back outdoors. I have found that the tendency to buckle under fruit weight inhibits circulation which kills them off. They seem to do better since I started watering roots less and spraying leaves instead. Being a vine, I presume they are evolved to absorb quite a lot through leaves and stems. Anyway, luck or not, If I can manage a few weeks more, it will be nice to have something to show for the effort of trying to keep it alive through the winter. | aleman
27/2/2017 09:27 | Good Morning. Its just started raining here so gardening activities curtailed! I missed the allocation date on LXI - trading started today - possibly worth a look. MrP - it is amazing the lengths that some of these mindless idiots will go to in order to cause inconvenience to others - its a pity they can't channel their determination in a more positive direction! | skinny
26/2/2017 09:58 | Morning -0.21% on Friday, BLT, BRCI & BRWM doing all the damage. -0.83% for a week sprinkled with profit warnings, bringing YTD from all time high lower @ +3.45% . Disappointingly, a neighbour has spotted that I have some roof damage caused by Doris, I have no line of sight on that particular section of roof. So despite two separate works done over last two summers to make the roof tiles/eaves securer am still susceptible to future Doris strength NW high winds. This CAT 1 type storm tracking across Central England never used to happen, so when MetO looking backwards state it's a one in ten year event they are deluded. 5/7 in the quiz, first five Q ok.. I watched last Sunday's SS GB with subtitles, wasn't aware of mumbling problem. Taboo's portrayal of East India Co, the world's first corporate raider, commodity Behemoth etc was an interesting storyline. | blueliner
25/2/2017 00:27 | Checking in from British Columbia. Have had a fun weeks skiing. There is nothing to beat the sensation of hurtling down a mountain on skis and it is one of the few sports where age doesn't have a huge impact. Will start heading home tomorrow and pick up a couple of resorts around Banff on way back to Calgary. Markets seem to have treated me kindly this week and am now +4.9% YTD. A little different to last year when everything went to rats whilst I was away. Enjoy your weekends | shadowside
24/2/2017 18:38 | -0.7% for me. BRCI was the biggest culprit. NAV has gone down a bit but a decent premium to NAV has moved to a decent discount in recent days. It's helped make for a poor week. YTD is now -5.5%. 2% of that was the January tax but still a bit of a disappointing start to the year, given the way everything else has gone. 9.6C high with lots of sun. A good day for some hard work in the garden and then took the kids to the local park and cafe. It was a pleasant day that felt warm between 11am and 3pm if you were busy. It has finally brought out some crocuses in the neighbourhood and one or two isolated daffodils. Even though they still have not quite got there in our garden, flower heads are colouring and about to burst and it felt like the first day of spring. I hope there is more for everyone to enjoy this weekend but have a good one anyway. | aleman
24/2/2017 18:29 | I also hold CLLN and like yourself MrP thinking about adding a few more. Think I might wait until the results next week, if good, I will sell something else to free up buy cash. wllm | wllmherk |
