Weekend press reports suggest that NX will formally reject the Cosmen/CVC jont takover bid:

Speculation is growing that Stagecoach are preparing an all share takeover bid:

With half year results due on Thursday, things are looking interesting....

£535 Million . Dedt or not ....Opportunism .

Debt restructuring alone could bring enormous benefits .

According to the FT the family sent a letter to the board saying any deal would be above £500 million. The market cap is above that now. Considering the share price was above £12 I think that undervalues the company by a considerable amount. There may be problems but the company will survive and recover in a couple of years.

that debt is a problem - i remember one broker saying it was worthless so very interesting esp if the bidder offers under the present price!!

Anyone bidding is going to have take on a huge amount of debt, and so get its bankers to roll that debt. Step up private equity who love a chunk of debt and, presumably, a Spanish bank. Personally I can't see why anyone would buy it for more than 200p given the debt and the risks, but clearly someone is. The board should snap off the hand of anyone who bids around the current price.

FGP and SGC shares have pulled back, so there is a fear they may bid. Will see what the comment is over the weekend.

Paulywally,

Your forgetting that Jorge Cosmen/The Cosmen family already 18% of NX, Jorge Cosmen is also on the board as a Non Exec, so they will be more than aware of the current risks

First pulled out because of uncertainty, anyone buying nx now could still end up losing rail services so who wants to buy and then lose money.

Statement in Response to Press Speculation
A consortium, comprising funds advised by CVC Capital Partners ("CVC") and
interests of the Cosmen family (the "Family"), notes the recent press
speculation in relation to National Express plc ("National Express") and
confirms that it has made an indicative proposal to acquire for cash the entire
issued and to be issued shares of National Express. There can be no certainty
that any offer will be made and further announcements will be made when
appropriate.

Steve I agree if there is any bidding war, the price will be suppressed by the economy/lack of cash as you said, plus the uncertainty over the rail franchises and NX's debt.

The asset which is of most interest in NXWM, but the American/Canadian school bus business makes good money, as does ALSA in Spain

First are currently the biggest in the UK, just can't see them sitting back to allow Stagecoach to take pole position. Time will tell I guess

The state of the economy winston, and the lack of cash these companies have will not see a massive bidding war.

Whoever agrees a deal first, if indeed they do, will et the business. I can not see one of the other groups countering the offer in the current climate.

The prise asset is the Midlands bus business ... which will interest all the major UK transport groups ... and maybe one or 2 from overseas.

If the interested party is Stagecoach and they make a formal bid, that will then release First Group to bid should they decide to have a re-think now a rival is insterested in NX. NX have some highly profitable & sought after businesses. I would have thought that Arriva could also be a possible future contender, we could have a potential bidding war on our hands....

There is also speculation that Veolia maybe be examining National Express Group as a potential merger partner aswell as Transdev & Arriva

I can't personally see NEG staying as an independant group for too much longer, both First & Stagecoach are know to be keen on NEG's bus business in the West Midlands (NXWM). Both Stagecoach & First could merge with NEG without too many MMC issues, Arriva & Go-Ahead too possibly.

Interesting times.....

Ha Ha Well I'm out of this one at the moment Dancing Piranha as its to hard to call. I've made a decent profit since buying these and will call it quits while I'm ahead.

Despite our difference of opinion on this one I wish you all the best and hope you get a profit on your short as well. In fact I hope your right in calling the short as now I'm totally out so don't want to see the shares do well.

All the best but watch out for any takeover news!! Could ruin your short!
