First group would not be making a hostile bid unless they knew something about the East Coast Mainline deal.

He had better be with that amount of debt. Still, no doubt he's having a quiet word with the govt re rail and bus franchises, esp East Coast.

A bid at 450p should seal this ones fate. And that would be a pe of 5?!!!!

The Board of FirstGroup
continues to believe that there is significant industrial and commercial logic
in a combination of the two companies

I can't imagine how they met their covenants - maybe any money they would have to hand back to the government for East Coast is not included. Still, everything hinges on the negotiations re East Coast and any subsequent rights issue.

loryd cheers for the info

The drop seemed like a bit of an overkill considering very little shares were actually sold, it's noticeable there was a sale of just 2 shares less than a minute before the drop, heard before that its talk between MMs?

Rumours that David Ross is selling stakes in Carphone and Big Yellow. As he owns 2% of Nat Exp it probably had a knock-on effect.

Everyone seems to be waiting for the right issue/news on East Coast and everyone seems to expect a positive outcome. Personally I think that even if they get governemnt concessions they are far from out of the woods - Spain looks ugly and there is pressure on the bus and coach business. And it will need a substantial rights issue to tackle the debt. Still, I wouldn't want to be short though it might not be a bad bet if it rose a lot on news.
