GKN Metallurgy helps TU Munich

Team TUfast Uses Metal 3D Printing to Improve Cooling Geometry of Its Unique Race Car Housing By 20%

3D printing is often called to the track these days to help student formula teams in augmenting their race cars. This season, the Formula Student racing team from TU Munich (TUM) worked with GKN Additive to step up their game and improve their electric race car’s performance.

Every year, student teams competing in the the Formula SAE and Formula Student competitions are ranked on the acceleration, cost and manufacturing analysis, design, electrical efficiency, and endurance of their cars. Through their research, the students are also helping to shape the future of electric vehicles. Team TUfast (which is the best name ever) was founded as a student initiative in 2002, and currently has over 70 members divided across multiple areas.

Most small power-dense motors located in a car’s wheel hub operate at high temperatures, which damages not only the motor but the team’s score. This year, TUfast improved the cooling geometry of their car’s unique housing in the wheel hub by nearly 20% by using metal 3D printing to make it small enough to fit.
“The result is significantly improved heat transfer compared to last year´s concept while having an even temperature distribution over the surface and further weight reduction of the whole wheel hub drive-package,”; Susanne Trautmann, the Global Marketing Manager for GKN Sinter Metals Engineering GmbH, told 3DPrint.com.

Team member Marco Tönjes, who is responsible for the team’s electric motor and its components, explained in a GKN Sinter Metals blog post that TUfast decided to work with the additive side of GKN Powder Metallurgy because the company is well-known in the market for its expertise.

Meanwhile/Ryelodge, can you do one of your 'calculations' for us please? Lots of depressing news around today so we need a laugh.

B+ "I know I have lots of failings. My wife never stops pointing them out!!!"

haha does your wife have a sister? If so then I must be married to her haha.

Thanks for the update on Ergotron, helps with what I call 'background information' as I mentioned before I only monitor a few key bits of data on a daily basis but always like to read updates on this board if people a kind enough to post.

Failings?? Me??!!!

I know I have lots of failings. My wife never stops pointing them out!!!

I also know some top graduates who are excellent, and some people without degrees who are top of their tree.

Just making the point that a good degree isn’t equivalent to success. Personally I spent too much time indulging in as many sports as I could. Still didn’t do me any harm.

Quite true. But there also many first class degree types who also are worldly wise. Be careful that you don't use that belief to excuse your own failings.

Getting, I know quite a few people with First Class Honours degrees, and several with Double Firsts, from top universities. My experience is that these degrees don’t necessary mean they are particularly “intelligent” when it comes to practical things. Many are not worldly wise at all.

One person I was at university with got a First mainly on the fact that he had an incredible photographic memory. He would number the pages of his notes. His party trick was to ask you for a page and then quote exactly what was on it!!! But ask him to solve a real problem and he was lost.

Still it takes all sorts to make this world.

By the way, I believe that Dianne Abbott studied History at Cambridge University. Case proved I think!!!?

Better cricket this time. Bess a bit of a star with the right attitude and Boycott waxing lyrical about his batting.

Ryelodge, need to test you to see if you are actually Meanwhile: there are 11 players in a football team, four are 6ft tall, three are 5ft 10in, the other four are 5ft 9in. Calculate (a) the arithmetic mean height, (b) the median height, (c) the range of heights. If you get all three correct you are definitely not Meanwhile.

And what exactly have you contributed to this site Meanwhile in the last few months? Recipes and tips for stain removal. Almost as useful as one of your ludicrous 'calculations'.

I'm thoroughly bored with this site now. Since the GKN bid there hasn't been a single bit of valuable information on Melrose from anyone, although there has been a few posts with good insights into the old GKN. It was useful a while ago but it's now just beset by trumpet-blowers, know-alls and deadbeats, babbling like a group of old washerwomen.

I won't be using the site any longer, but since I've been accused of various weaknesses lately, I'll tell you who we are and you can make up your own mind. Of course you needn't believe it and it could all be just trumped up.

My wife and I are professionals, we've 3 university degrees between us in pure science, including 1st Classes, and our lad has a couple more. We have loads of money. We've used this site for many years with good exchanges. In March 2016 I suggested a means of making a packet on Melrose, posts 1607 & 1611, a course which we followed and made around 250K by the time of the 12 for 1 rights shares being issued and a good bit more since. Graham 'the Times' burn was around then, as was eipgam.
These posts have a bit of maths and some logic, so 'goingdownhill' and 'the Cotswold sage' will see, if they bother to read them, that sometimes it pays off.

There are some great opportunities elsewhere now, and at one time I may have told you of them, but nothing exciting left at Melrose.

Time to move on I think. Liverpool lost. Let’s look forward to next season. I’ve had an up and down season with Gloucester RFC. They are signing new players. Hope they perform. Like Liverpool they are flaky in the last 10 minutes, and have difficulty closing games out.

Anyway, I now have an idea how to remove fruit stains. And only one number - 40. Whether that is an average, or range, I have no idea!!!
