GRS- only too pleased! But I believe there’s plenty more scope for Plus to rise mich further with shareholders being paid special dividends too, a real money tree!

Good for you. And Yertiz has done me a favour with his Plus500 recommendation. Up 10% today!

Thanks getting. I seem to be doing something right, with both Playtech and Syncona.

Playtech have been pretty stagnant for a while, so I thought I could put the cash to better use.

B+, looks like you got out at the right time with Playtech to say the least!! Down 28% this morning??

Agreed. September seems a long way away. Should there be a trading statement before the interims?

I expect lots of treading water and buying opportunities before then.

Am concentrating on Syncona and Burford Capital at present.

Don't forget that Melrose specifically stated (more than once) that the board would be updating shareholders on its plans for GKN in September.

So, knowing the company well, that is exactly when we hear - unless there is a quick sale of one or other of the perceived non-core units (which I doubt).

Brexit

MRO share price has been taking a breather recently after a reasonable rise and has also been affected by the general market volatility (amply illustrated by today's reversal of yesterday's fall).

Your third point is undoubtedly correct. It occurred to me yesterday when the negative car industry "mood" was in the air, not to mention the difficulties within the aerospace industry in the past week that I would have taken more note of it when I held GKN as a standalone business. Now GKN has been absorbed into my holding in Melrose it's easy to forget the latter is now subject to many more "market influences/sentiment" than it was prior to the takeover.

Nothing unusual in that - one just has to accept that with conglomerates (and remember that).

Hi Graham

I read this. I’m not particularly worried. There are many factors.

1 Lack of Melrose comment on the sale of Ergotron and GKN Metallurgy

2 General fall in the US stock market which will affect valuation of Nortek

3 ok, sentiment in the auto industry, but GKN is very well placed in electric vehicle and China

It will be interesting when Melrose post their trading update in August, I think.

Good opportunity to top up.

Now this board has quietened down (without too much from the filtered contributors), and I can put my head above the parapet again, let's get back to proper information about Melrose - even if it is less positive, albeit factual!

The Market Report in The Times today leads on Melrose:

Trade worries dim lights for Europe’s carmakers
Louisa Clarence-Smith

Melrose’s share price was knocked down after a German lighting manufacturer’s profit warning weighed on European motor industry stocks.

Osram Licht, the Munich-based electricals manufacturer, said vehicle-makers it supplies with headlights and other components had cut back their orders amid uncertainty over trade restrictions and a change in laboratory test standards. Carmakers’ stocks in Europe were sent lower, with French supplier Valeo closing down €2.72 at €47.03 and German manufacturer Continental AG down €5.05 at €197.15.

Melrose Industries, the London-based conglomerate, completed the £7.9 billion hostile takeover of British auto company GKN in March. Analysts said the knock to its share price was in line with how GKN’s share price historically fluctuated in line with the health of the auto sector.

Melrose fell to a 2018 low, closing down 6¾p at 208¼p.

B+, I've found Ratesetter very easy. Just like a savings account without the guarantee. Very happy with the rates too obviously. I think I looked at Funding Circle but I felt it was more risky for little extra return.

Yertiz, it isn't hot if you go high enough! Up Helvellyn the other day it was chilly, even though it was hot at bottom.

Hi Losos. My friend had his own apartment in Kentucky for the racing. When he arrived in Saudi he just popped up to the best hotel and told them what he needed. They had to supply. In London if he needed an onion he sent a taxi to collect from Harrods. Another world.

Hi Yertiz

Syncona Annual Report published today. Syncona is really interesting as it’s cash are held in funds, mainly hedge funds, so absolutely no debt. Read the report - masses of info.

We were walking Porlock to Minehead and very hot.

Great stuff B+!
Good luck with BUR.

Syncona... will have a look but never been very good in the “drugs” area myself so usually steer clear. No “double entendre” intended haha!

Got that Losos ;-)

B+ - Nice story about your 'chef' friend, having worked in Kingdom I can confirm to any who may doubt the veracity of the story that this is (or was) the norm for the Royal familly out there. To have one Boing 747 as your personal transport might seem OK but to have three just seems a tad over indulgent to me haha. I'm sure the meal was finished in excellant shape and was enjoyed by all of you.

Sogoesit - Yes we do go 'off topic' on this thread but as you say it's all interesting stuff. Over the comming months and years it's likely that the thread will go quiet but when one of the above people do visit it will be interesting reading apart from the one who will never be seen (by me) on here haha. (Same as you as it happens)

I’m seriously looking at Syncona, just picking my moment before plunging in with £15k ISA purchase.
Weather is fantastic- pity it’s so unpredictable in the UK, but this is too hot for walking, especially on the N Cornish coastline. But some amazing sunsets to be seen.

Hi Sogoesit

If the weather was always like now there would be no reason to go abroad. Fabulous here and lots of walking planned, plus the compulsory pint en route.

I’m really pleased with Syncona. Great investments and no debt.

And I’ve plumped for Burford Capital. I like the business model and listened to an interview with the boss. I think there is potential to double quite quickly.

Hi Getting

How do you find Ratesetter, and did you look at Funding Circle?

This is a great thread... I love it!
Whenever I'm feeling a bit despondent I return to it to read all the important news from contributors about their activities.

Wonderful! Keep it coming folks... even the numbers, statistics and calculations from Meanwhile are great (ignoring the rubbish songs he cites of course). Minerva, as ever, is filtered so i have no idea about either his intellect or erudition (not a word I'm accustomed to use or know the meaning of as an "idiot" brexit voter tbf).

For myself I have returned to the sunny uplands of England in all its summer glory having been away touring such non-EU countries like China, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia. It's amazing how easy it is to travel and do business in these places compared to the bureaucracy and regulations of the EU's misnamed "Free Trade Area".

Ah well, not long to go 'til freedom calls...
