05/4/2020 16:46 | @cliff edge - I'd agree that supermarkets are peddling mainly Covid-19. Try keeping 2 metres apart in an aisle. However - a third of calories were previously eaten outside the home, so I think there's still going to be plenty of demand to go round. And that's before we get to pricing - particularly enjoyed the "3 for" on baked beans when they cut the limit to 2 cans. | spectoacc
05/4/2020 14:02 | I’m avoiding supermarkets completely now. | mr roper
05/4/2020 14:00 | I cant help feeling that the self imposed rules and regulations put in place by the supermarkets, whilst extremely well meant and necessary, that they have allowed all common sense to go completely out of the window. I also believe that whilst there was an initial upsurge in demand and a large degree of panic buying etc. which boosted revenues, that now they are all suffering and that sales will be generally down?, its not "Christmas every day" as I have read somewhere, its far from it, its a nightmare everyday more like! and for as long as it goes on the more and more people are being pushed further and further towards their local store. There is an upsurge in online but that's not exactly convenient either. | cliff edge
05/4/2020 13:48 | Nisa, bought by the Co-op three years ago, saw 15 per cent more purchases and the value of them increased by half, while McColl's had seen 7 per cent more transactions last month and the value up 22 per cent. | strutt12
05/4/2020 13:20 | NHS busy caring for those who crowded the supermarkets and caught Covid off each other at the first "voluntary" lock-down. Partly, anyway. | spectoacc
05/4/2020 13:13 | Went to Iceland at 1730 yesterday. Shop closes at 1800. No queue so tried going in. Told (politely)it was HNS hour. Asked them how many were in shopping. Reply - none, how many have you had in? R - none. Well rules are rules but thought that somewhat stupid. | scobak

04/4/2020 16:56 | English people are highly influenced by their peers, and have the lowest iq's of developed nations, so mass buying of extra strong anything is a must.mccolls will do very well out if this!! | kiwimonk
04/4/2020 16:39 | I had to queue for 20m+ to get into a Tesco Extra last night. The limit there was 200 including staff. I'm using my local Coop more. We do local walks for exercise and go in and get stuff if we pass and the queue is short. Every time I've been in, beer on the shelf has been low and there has been gaps on shelves in some areas. Clearly some stuff is selling very well. I used to just go in for bread and milk and spend a few £s but now I might spend £20 as I pick up other things because I can't guarantee Tesco or Sainsbury will have them and I don't like their queues. Also, 3 of our 4 local takeaways have shut down which means more food must be bought for home. I imagine some will nip in and get a pizza or ready meal when they've had a hard day and can't be bothered to cook (assuming no significant queue). I'm biassed, but I'll be amazed if there is not a boost to sales and margins, which should make mincemeat of the debt. It will drop back to 2 x EBITDA much more quickly than previously expected, as both EBITDA should rise and debt fall more quickly. Also, I have a friend works at an M&S warehouse. He says it's twice as busy as Christmas and everybody seems to want wine. I bet we end up with more young and middle-aged people dying of lack of exercise, cirrhosis of the liver and heart disease than we lose old people to Covid-19. I'm not sure we have adopted the right policy, bearing in mind constant criticisms of the numbers the policy is based on. | aleman
04/4/2020 16:06 | I'm shopping in my local convenience store it isn't a Mccolls but it follows the trend on here. It is just too much hassle in the big shops and feels like the zombie apocalypse. | totalgeek69
04/4/2020 15:05 | In my local small supermarket if two people turn up together, say a husband and wife only one is allowed in while the other has to wait out side which therefore is allowing more shoppers inside to shop. The resaon why I'm using my local small supermarket is because overal there is only a very small amount of waiting time before one is able to get in to shop. So far I've yet to go to our large edge of town Tesco's. | loganair
04/4/2020 14:23 | Have to say, I'm getting fed up of queuing for supermarkets. My local giant Tesco has a 300 limit - including staff, which will be easily 15% of that. | spectoacc
04/4/2020 14:03 | Convenience stores are picking up the additional alcohol sales due to pub closures and restrictions on sales in supermarkets. Tesco last week had a limit of one case of beer per customer, there was only two cases in the store at the time! Looks like most people will be having a BBQ this weekend with immediate family etc. in an attempt to cheer themselves up a bit. In monetary terms alcohol is probably the category showing the greatest sales uplift in Convenience currently. | cliff edge
04/4/2020 13:25 | Hope it’s a McColl’s! | mr roper
04/4/2020 13:11 | I am now shopping in a convenience store about the size of a small Sainsbury's local or Tesco Express. I am truly astounded at the amount of alcohol that is being bought. Only 5 staff are now allowed in the store at any one time with one of them, there only job is to constantly be restocking the booze, especially beer which is literately flying off the shelves. Almost every trolley I saw has 2 x packs of 12 beer/larger and some even more. | loganair
04/4/2020 11:35 | Good stuff. Bodes well for next week. Chart looks like it could run to 45-50p. Would be nice to get an interim update on trading. | mr roper
