Spa numbers up 200 percent is a good gauge I would think. Also doing home deliveries via uber eats for food and alcohol.

Current trading

All our stores are currently open and well-placed to serve our communities. We have put in place a range of policies designed to protect our colleagues and customers, keep our stores open and trading safely, and to enable our head office to support our stores via remote working arrangements.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK, the Group has responded proactively to current strong demand. We continue to work with our wholesale partners, whilst investigating complementary channels, to supply the essential products our customers need at this time.

Yes - "We've stopped all promotions and are going to be one of the few shops left open - bring it on" probably wouldn't cut it. :)

I'm not sure of the politics of RNS' but I imagine 'we're taking it in' would be a tad crass. Sounds very positive to me though.

If they're doing as well as I think they are, that t/s doesn't particularly mention it.

Retailers allowed to stay open are: Supermarkets, pharmacies, Newsagents, Hardware stores, Banks, Pet shops, Post Offices, Petrol stations, vets, Hospital shops, Laundrettes, funeral homes. therefore Mc Colls are included in the above list.

Just looking at the share prices of the supermarkets from one month ago prior to the Coronavirus collapse, versus the subsequent panic buying boom:

21/02/20 Tesco £2.55 Now £2.27 -11%
21/02/20 Morrisons £1.86 Now £1.85 flat
21/02/20 Sainsbury £2.10 Now £2.09 flat

On the 16th March the market collapsed but has recovered in all but Tesco which is just -11%

The picture for Mc Colls is 21/02/20 £0.42 Now 0.21p -50% No recovery, yet it has all of the "relative" advantages of the above.

Peel Hunt - said McColl’s was in a similar situation, with its current share price not reflecting the opportunity to stay open as an essential retailer.

“Community retailing is even more valuable at the moment and we would expect these stores to be very busy”, they said.

Local neighbourhood retailers such as Mc Colls will play a critical part in the event of any such stricter lock down, they will definitely be on the list of Essential stores being allowed to remain open, not least of which they are the largest operator of Post Offices in the UK.

I have trying to work out a rough estimate of how much extra spend there will be in the supermarkets because of:

1. People working from home so not having lunch out.
2. Kids not at school so not having school lunches.
3. All the retail and hospitality workers now at home because their places of work have shut so not eating lunch out.
4. People not being able to go out in the evenings and weekends to pubs and restaurants etc.

I reckon about £400mln per week, £1.6bln per month extra is going to be needed to be spent in the supermarkets because of the above.

Mc Colls stand to benefit hugely from pub closures being one of the nations largest local off licence retailers, unlike Supermarkets they have the advantage of selling almost all alcohol chilled for immediate consumption (except red of course!)

It gets pushed down late every day, almost as if someone wanted it cheap for their eventual bid... ;)

MCLS are in such a sweet spot, wonder how long it will last and how big effect it can have on their debt load.

Morrisons (& by extension, MCLS) should benefit more from their vertical integration. ASDA used to own farms too, not sure if they still do.

This would be the first hump, the stocking up one. It's the later, food imports hump that is more concerning.

In Morrisons at lunchtime and it's looking better - no loo roll, next to no tinned meats, and low on cereals and freezers but you could still have got something from them and rest of shop looked pretty normal. Are we over the hump?

I was in Morrisons the other day & it was amazing seeing the long lines of freezers completely empty.

Not sure how much this is becoming a food supply issue (with the c.47% we usually import) - Tesco restrict to 3 (was 2) of any one item, eg if you get Weetabix, Cornflakes, & Special K, you have to decide which one to put back. So we're already rationed, it isn't any longer people taking trolleys-full.

6am at the giant Tesco this morning I got eggs (not many left), bread (phew), didn't take pasta (I'm a prepper, you don't buy pasta), one pack (that's the max) of toilet roll that had as many left as the eggs & a staff member guarding it (5 mins max before gone), and didn't bother with UHT milk - can't see the kids drinking it! The store was busy, the checkout woman was getting grief from an unpleasant woman in front, and between the two of us was Paul the Weatherman from Look North (for those of a Yorkshire disposition).

Mildly regret not buying the tub of powdered milk a fortnight ago tho.

MCLS will be absolutely coining it.

Nope, but they'll sure have a big pool of the mass unemployed! Asda, MRW, Amazon all recruiting atm, & the unsupported self-employed are already desperate.
