25/7/2024 23:23 | Achieving ANY sales growth on last year with the 'Summer' we've been having so far is quite an achievement. Obviously it will differ from venue to venue, but a takings difference of 2x or more for a hot sunny day vs. a washout is not unusual | boffster

25/7/2024 11:11 | FennersStill can't see how you can dismiss an event as though it didn't happen. This is in the hospitality industry, income very much depends on such variables like major events and also obviously the weather plays its part too, thus making financial comparisons not so black and white as you would like.As for CAV. Fair enough but again you comment negatively but fail to balance that with a pragmatic judgment. There was sufficient info to do that IMO. | disc0dave46
25/7/2024 10:52 | If we get away with merely a recession we can think ourselves lucky. What is actually coming is a massive financial crash, triggered in part by excessive US government debt, that will make 2008 look like a tea party..... | dexdringle

24/7/2024 22:45 | disco As I posted earlier - its the breakdown of the like for like vs earlier in the year Year-to-date, like-for-like sales increased by 5.2% but Like-for-like sales increased by 2.4% in the 16-week period to 20 July 2024 despite being up 8% in the finals week So aside from that final week , LFL was only 2% in the last 16 weeks Contrast massively with the first 26 weeks which was therefore up by 6.9% Tells me sales growth has dried up and costs are likely still rising by more - with a possible massive increase in minimum wage to come when labour get to their first budget.. sales growth in the first 26 weeks was a good % but its tailed off , surely there was bad weather in the 26 weeks as well? We all expected that if England got to the final there was going to be an uplift for pubs - but take out just 2 nights of football which alone accounted for 0.4% of the 16 weeks like for like and what are you left with when England are not playing. Remember there were 5 other nights in that. Tells me that aside from England playing footie their growth has dried up. As for Cav I want to see the full accounts and examine their staff costs... | fenners66

24/7/2024 13:41 | fennersYou can't simply dismiss what the benefit in LFL sales from the Euros was, and then say it was only 2%. Their income is massively impacted by weather and events.Off topic but I posted on CAV what you thought their earnings could be, woukd appreciate your view. | disc0dave46
24/7/2024 13:00 | LBC Pub giant Marston’s cheers Euro 2024 sales boost 24 July 2024, 13:24 The company also said its customers were spending well on both food and drinks, with changes to its menu ‘proving increasingly popular’. Pub group Marston’s has revealed the Euro 2024 tournament delivered a boost to sales as fans flocked to venues to support the England football team in the final. The company, which runs about 1,370 pubs across the UK, said the football lift came after a period of wet weather put a dampener on summer sales. It said like-for-like sales during the week of the semi-final and final matches jumped by 8%, compared with the same period last year. This helped to lessen the impact of unseasonably wet weather, and following particularly strong sales this time last year, Marston’s said. Marston’s said sales at its pubs were lifted considerably by the Euro 2024 tournament The extra support for the hospitality sector during the European Championships generated nearly £1 billion in additional revenue for local pubs and venues, according to estimates by the Night Time Industries Association. Pubs and supermarkets benefited from a bumper weekend of sales before England’s defeat against Spain in the final, which was watched by some 24 million across the BBC and ITV. Meanwhile, Marston’s said its customers were spending well on both food and drinks, with changes to its menu “proving increasingly popular with guests”. The company has an estate of pubs scattered across the country, including franchises and leased pubs, and hires about 10,000 staff. Earlier this month, it announced the sale of its stake in UK cask ale brewer Carlsberg Marston’s – which brews beers including 1664, Hobgoblin and Shipyard – to Carlsberg for £206 million. Marston’s said offloading the spin-off will allow it to focus purely on operating its pub chain and will reduce the amount of debt it holds. Chief executive Justin Platt, who was formerly an executive at Legoland owner Merlin Entertainments, said: “I look forward to delivering on the opportunities a focused pub business will provide.” By Press Association | the grumpy old men
