Lets hope so.

It seems that it is gaining based on the market gaining, although I'm not complaining if we can hold it.

Last Friday a financial whizz kid guest on that financial channel was suggesting buying pubcos with the upcoming World cup etc etc...one of his picks was MARS...unfortunately he did not hold personally!...

Yeah sure.

With reports suggesting increased sales for bars and pubs relating to it being a world cup year, I'm suprised that we can't even get through the 90's.

100 days to W/C and counting!

Frustrating is an understatement here...this 90p area is proving a strong resistance for the last 3 months..

Very good post jeffian.

I also believe that this is a fairly logical route to take.

The share price is frustrating though!

There's no evidence that it is tied pubs that are going out of business. Rather the contrary, I would have thought; brewers and pubco's have a vested interest in keeping their pubs open whereas banks lending to freehouses just want their money back. Anyway, without the tie, you can wave goodbye to a whole raft of small brewers and although MARS and GNK have come a long way from their purely regional roots, I doubt either would survive long if they had no tied pub estate and had to battle it out in the free trade with hugely promoted national and international brands.

Yes and to me too. This is an area that needed a fresh approach before all these tied pubs go out of business.

Sounds like a pragmatic approach to me?

Marston's offers tenants wholesale beer prices
25 February, 2010

By Matt Eley

Pubco also promises to freeze prices until October

Marston's has unveiled details of its latest tenancy agreement which will give licensees the chance to buy beer at freetrade prices.

After researching and conducting interviews with scores of licensees across the estate Marston's Pub Company boss Alistair Darby has concluded the "main issue is the price of beer, not the beer tie itself".

In response the Burton-based operator is inviting around 600 of its top licensees to take part in its 'Advance' scheme. This means they can buy beer at the same price Marston's would charge freetrade customers. The incremental discount earned will be partly offset by an additional payment.

In a trial scheme involving 30 licensees those who took part and invested to grow their businesses were around £7,500 better off. More than half of those invested cash in schemes such as promotions to achieve an average volume growth of five per cent.

Darby said: "After listening to what licensees had to say about the 'tie' it became obvious that increasing price activity around them was a bigger concern than their rent."

Advance follows Marston's Retail Agreement scheme, effectively a new deal placed between management and a tenancy. Under the agreement Marston's pays for costs such as rates, utilities, marketing and beer with the licensee taking 20 per cent of turnover for staff costs and their own salary during the five years of the deal.

With the exception of Carling Black Label (due to a hike from Coors) Marston's is freezing wholesale price on all draught products to its tenants until October 1. It will also be introducing Stella 4 to its range.

"The whole point here is we are trying to give our tenants real alternatives on other brands and some certainty in what is going to be a crucial spring and summer," added Darby.

Today's top chart (left) looks exactly the opposite of Friday's action....when it was above the flat line horizontal most of the day...unlike today it is below the flat line and horizontal..

Could choose worse punts!

As loing as they can trade somewhere in line until World Cup time, then we could see a top end of expectations trading update afterwards, particularly if England do well!!

Might 6 month punt for this on the booze front and Sport Direct on the retail front, given the World Cup income boost !
