Yeah lade, the £13bn from tobacco tax will likely come mainly from the English who don't try running away from paying tax at every opportunity.

Source - Smithsonian. An interesting read concerning collateral deaths from a depression.

There's this somewhat counter-intuitive idea that economic downturns are good for your health. You might expect the privation and malnutrition inherent in such times would take a toll. But during the Great Depression, mortality rates fell. And since that time, the idea that recessions are a net-positive for health has only grown.

.....The researchers examined mortality rates from 114 U.S. cities in 36 states between 1929 and 1937 along with data on bank suspensions, which were used as an indicator of the impact of the financial crisis in the individual states.

They found declines in deaths due to pneumonia, flu and tuberculosis and increases in deaths from heart disease, cancer and diabetes. But none of those causes of death were associated with bank suspensions, and only the increase in deaths from heart disease could plausibly relate to the economic depression, the scientists write.

Two causes of death did correlate with the pattern of bank suspensions: suicide rates rose but motor vehicle accidents declined, so much so that they outweighed the increase in suicides.

Of all the people I know who smoke, I don't know anyone that's actually purchased cigarettes in the UK for about 10 years,

1000 Cigs in UK = £500 - £600

1000 Cigs in Polska = £140 - £175

With no limits on purchases, is anyone surprised ???

Poik, you are putting forward a single issue argument trying to appeal to people's emotions. Make a holistic analysis. Look at what are very likely to be in the months ahead 'unintended consequencies' of the lockdown and all the other measures we are taking.

Poikka, another thought for the day - various experts have estimated current actions will kill 18,000,000 life years in an attempt to save at a max 10,000 life years.

Well I'm surprised you haven't commented on anything I've written today.

But I'll comment on your numbers if you want - overall deaths dwarf covid deaths, and any death is regrettable (usually .... or perhaps I should say sometimes) but it's one of the certainties of life. I'll die, you'll die, whoopie we're all gonna die. Sort of motivate you (or rather me) to try to make the most of it while you can, and preferable not be put under house arrest, especially when it does more harm than good).

A groundbreaking study in Germany has found that far more people may have been infected with the coronavirus than previously thought, suggesting the real death rate is as low as 0.37 per cent and  that 15 per cent of people may already have immunity."This means a gradual relaxation of the lockdown is now possible," Prof Hendrik Streeck, the leader of the study said.... daily Telegraph

PO - I am surprised that you have not commented on the official death statistics. Here are the latest UK stats:
The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in February 2020 was 43,653; this represents a decrease of 13,053 deaths in comparison with the previous month and a decrease of 2,143 deaths in comparison with the same month in 2019.

(btw. No comment intended by me).

Looks as if Trumpy's got it right with his attack on the WHO - they were not calling it a pandemic and saying that it wasn't being transferred person to person at the same time that Trump wanted to ban travel from China.

How come Trump called it right but the experts dragged their heels - and now we are where we are.

I read a story that many of the deaths in Italy could be attributed to Eastern European care workers fleeing and going back home, leaving many, mostly old and infirm, without sufficient care and lowering the chances of their survival"

Most of the Corona outbreak in Italy is in the North
The North is home to a large Chinese population...businesses/travel etc etc.

When this is all over there will be massive debt to pay back or write off, it will be the poor and average joe who will take the worst of it. The mega rich and rich need to step up or made to"

Suspect this wont be over for a long long time...

We had a massive indebtedness problem before this virus appeared.
Phase 1 of virus is nearly over.

Next comes food shortages, arising from flooding in Americas, fires in OZ, and those 6 billion locusts chomping their way across East Africa.

Then Phase 2 of virus. Which will be worse.

Then phase 3 of the virus Fall/Winter 2021.

By then we will have civil wars across the globe.

Then it will be major conflicts between nations leading to a world war.

So it wont be over any time soon.

The end result will be a debt reset - a global write off. A new world currency and some major changes. All in the name of resetting how the world operates.

With plenty of freedoms lost.
