01/3/2019 17:02 | cp - agree with you - twice in a day! Meanwhile leading by example - "More than 150 UK MPs call for bigger pay rise for staff". | alphorn
01/3/2019 16:50 | Not sure it is Alphorn...…... | cheshire pete
01/3/2019 16:46 | The young can fend for themselves careful. They don't need mollycoddling. Saira Khan, ex the Apprentice, had 5 jobs. There is opportunity for those who are willing to make an effort. Old people shouldn't be seen as a problem or making life difficult for the younger generation by making them graft like many of my generation did. Why would no deal be a disaster then careful? Are you able to justify that comment? | cheshire pete
01/3/2019 16:41 | Careful - you are starting to sound like Minerve. Minerve, you need to get back up to speed - if it is you. | alphorn
01/3/2019 16:36 | no deal would be a disaster. It is not going to happen. MP's have a responsibility to stop the retired geriatrics from ruining the country for the young. | careful
01/3/2019 16:29 | The 'Ladeside' award for having zero knowledge must go to Chris Grayling. He has just spent £33 million to settle a legal case over Brexit ferries. The Government announced the payout to Eurotunnel over a decision to hand contracts worth £108 million to three ferry companies to run emergency cross-Channel services in the event of a no-deal Brexit. (One of which is now bust (?) and has/had no boats). Must be catching - Transport Minister with ferry companies with no boats and the Defence Minister with an aircraft carrier with no planes. Don't worry, we all know what we are doing. | alphorn
01/3/2019 15:51 | Peter Thomas 1 Mar 2019 3:44PM Please don't conflate how poorly the government is doing with whether we should leave or stay! I voted to leave, I trusted TM's statement that "No deal is better than a bad deal" What has happened since the vote has shown our political elite for what they are, they never wanted to leave and have been looking for ways to avoid leaving. I'm sure that there are many who are now so sick of this debacle, that they just want it to end and are beyond caring whether we leave or not. It is imperative to separate the feelings of frustration with the government from the fact that we voted to leave. A second referendum would be wrong, many say that those who did not vote first time round would now vote to remain. If this is the justification for re running the ballot, then voting should be made cumpulsory, otherwise we will be stuck in an endless loop of voting, not only referenda but General Elections as well as it is a very long time since any government was voted into with a majority of those who are eligible to vote.. The penalty for not voting, how about losing your right to vote, if you can't be bothered to acknowledge the sacrifices of our antecedents to preserve that right, then perhaps you need to rethink your values. | xxxxxy
01/3/2019 15:49 | Long ago it was it was. tony Posted March 1, 2019 at 8:58 am | Permalink A poor comparison because the Common Market we voted for in 1975 is a completely different animal now. Moreover, the EU is not some static ‘status quo’ system but is moving inexorably towards a federalist outcome, with centralised taxation, economic policy-making, and a nascent EU army and foreign policy. | xxxxxy
01/3/2019 15:42 | Odds on Mays deal will be voted through. She has played a long game well. Probable alternative outcomes scare JRM and his chums. Check mate. The extreme EU. nutters (about 120 of them) have lost out to that rag tag collection of oddball MP's (about 500 of them) who will stop no deal. Poor old Trump. The rural farm vote gave him power are struggling. Crop prices down, many farmers going bust...he was desperate to do a huge food dumping trade deal with the UK. Bad luck Donald, and his agents Boris and Farage. Better luck next time. | careful
01/3/2019 15:21 | Harsh !! Alphorn (or maybe not in some cases). | ladeside
01/3/2019 15:16 | Ladeside #042. Just have to look here. You could have stopped your phrase as "very few people actually have any knowledge". | alphorn
01/3/2019 14:41 | Government pays Eurotunnel £33m over Brexit ferry case. The government will pay £33m to Eurotunnel in an agreement to settle a lawsuit over extra ferry services in the event of a no-deal Brexit. In December, the Department for Transport (DfT) contracted three suppliers to provide additional freight capacity on ferries for lorries. But Eurotunnel said the contracts were handed out in a "secretive" way. As part of the agreement, Eurotunnel has agreed to make some improvements to its terminal. One of the firms awarded a ferry contract, Seaborne Freight, has already had its deal cancelled after the Irish company backing it pulled out. Shortly after it was awarded the contract, the BBC found out that Seaborne had no ships and had never run a ferry service. | bbalanjones
01/3/2019 14:36 | Your on the money with your last post Graham, as you say, very few people actually have any knowledge or interest in politics despite how the MSM try and frame it. | ladeside
01/3/2019 13:52 | Wishful thinking, I'm afraid, Shy Tott. An awful lot of people just go through the motions - they trot up to the polling station and put a cross next to their usual party and that's the extent of their interest. Watch daytime quiz shows if you want to know how ignorant our fellow citizens are about politics. They probably know who the Prime Minister is, but the Prime Minister before will be a facer, and Foreign Secretary or Chancellor, forget it! They just aren't interested. I'm sure the Brexit Party will cause some upsets, in Anna Soubry's constituency for example, but they'll be doing incredibly well if they take a single seat themselves. No, the key to success lies in the Conservative Party and in taking it back from the LibDems "Dave" stuffed it with. | grahamite2
01/3/2019 13:50 | The next "Remainer drain" who states that,,,,, "I can`t believe, they, us,,,, Brexiteers didn`t vote to be poorer" Just point out they, just don`t think straight, which is their,,,,,,, problem not any Brexit leaving VOTER!!!! | stonedyou
01/3/2019 13:12 | There is (was) a Brexit party called UKIP. Now you could argue Farage is honest; at least as honest as the next MP. I certainly wouldn't want to follow any of his ideology. | m4rtinu
01/3/2019 12:59 | As are labour. the Brexit party would take all the honest and democratic mps from all parties. All thhose mps trying to derail a march Brexit won't be looking forward to the next GE. | shy tott
01/3/2019 12:57 | cp - an uptick, agree! If 'a' Brexit party does hit the road it could well have unintended consequences. Definite need for some new blood without baggage for politics in general. pf - you are probably correct. :( | alphorn
01/3/2019 12:22 | Agree Alphorn, TND top man. He talks a lot of sense, far too much for some of the more high brow broadsheets lol. So the deal to hard line MPs would be vote my bad deal through and I will step down whichever month. Problem is would anyone feel able to trust her? The Tories must be getting twitchy at the thought of the Brexit Party taking off. | cheshire pete |
