16/6/2020 21:40 | Ian Mcleod 16 Jun 2020 8:45PM We are now in a deep recession and if this government does not wake up we will be in a depression. Stop dithering Boris - 1m rule and no quarantine would be a start to help correct this mess. ... Irrele Vent 16 Jun 2020 6:31PM Sturgeon's latest excuse for a fight with Westminster - she wants the UK goverment to extend the furlough scheme so that those of us in Scotland who are furloughed can continue to get some money whilst she extends our lockdown until Scotland is an economic wasteland. If Westminster refuses and people start to get laid off when the furlough ends, she can blame it all on the Toreez. Flag9Like Reply Phil Hunter 16 Jun 2020 6:37PM She really is awful, isn't she? ... Thes Aurus 16 Jun 2020 7:51PM Fail to understand why there is so much anger directed to our own Govt who obviously can’t help everyone. The anger should be directed at China by boycotting Chinese goods. Flag1Like Reply PVF Cosgrove 16 Jun 2020 8:06PM @Thes Aurus Yes, indeed! Even more anger against China for designing Covid-19 and failing to ensure that it could not possibly escape. Some nuke cruise missiles on its islands in the South China Sea would show how very angry we are with them. ... Sorwar Abedin 16 Jun 2020 12:00PM While the figures are bad, we need to understand that the unemployment rate has gone up from 3.9% to 6.8% and so it is still relatively low by European standards. France had unemployment of 8%, Germany 5% and Spain at 14% at the start of 2020. I suspect that the unemployment rate probably would not rise much above the current levels as most of the UK's trading partners are starting to open up and there has been no resurgence of the virus so far - in fact the infection rate is falling everywhere in the developed world. The real worry is that what will happen come the Autumn when the weather gets colder and if there is no effective treatment/vaccine then it may get grimmer with more job losses. Flag3Like Reply Michael Geddes 16 Jun 2020 12:12PM @Sorwar Abedin In the months ahead, you may have cause to review your prediction. Economists frequently disagree, but I have not heard any of them indicate anything other than further massive job losses around the corner. I sincerely wish that they've got it wrong, but I doubt it. And all due to government overreaction to a virus. Flag7Like Reply Sorwar Abedin 16 Jun 2020 12:19PM @Michael Geddes @Sorwar Abedin That is based on the virus keeping the global economy pretty much half closed throughout the year and there is hope with effective treatments/vaccines coming through soon. They can only predict with guesswork. And why do people keep blaming the UK government for all the ills over Covid-19? Even if the UK kept everything open, a lot of UK industry relies on global trade and industries such as airlines would be no better off. UK cannot be not affected hugely with what happens with it's main trading partners. | xxxxxy | |
