"There is mass testing taking place, officials saying that more than 2,000 wholesale market workers were tested on Friday alone.
"State media are reporting that the chairman of the market said traces of COVID-19 were found on a salmon chopping board - that has led to people getting concerned about food safety standards and an investigation launched across the city," she added.
The virus was first reported at a seafood market in Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei province, in December.
There have now been around 7.6 million people infected worldwide and more than 420,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University which has been tracking the outbreak.

The flip side of the BBC issue is that there is value in a station with a news flow without bias.

If there are major events eg Iraq war I watch the news on Swiss, French, UK and US channels. The difference on reporting a single event is tremendous. It does nobody any good to be served up doctored garbage.

If the BBC can not fill that role without fear of reprisal then it should indeed be privatised.............although there is still a need for unbiased news.

A city spokesman said all six COVID-19 patients confirmed in Beijing on Friday had visited the market.
They are the first locally transmitted cases in the city in more than 50 days.
Health officials in surrounding districts have also been asking residents whether they have visited the Xinfadi market.

The market was closed after someone, who had recently visited it, was reported to have been infected on Thursday.
As well as halting domestic tourism, sporting events have also been suspended in the city, while plans to reopen schools for some students have been dropped.
Pang Xinghuo, an official at the Beijing Centre for Disease Control, said: "Preliminary judgement suggests these cases may have come into contact with a contaminated environment in the market, or were infected after being in contact with infected people.
"We cannot rule out subsequent cases in the future."
Sky's Asia correspondent Siobhan Robbins said: "People in the area have been told not to leave their houses.
"It is a worrying time for Beijing because it hadn't had a locally transmitted case for almost two months, so it just shows you how tricky COVID-19 is to keep under control, and Beijing isn't taking any chances.
"Not only are these areas in lockdown, some schools and nurseries in the area were closed on Friday, several other markets have been shut as well.

don't give me that claptrap about the BBC being great at making comedy and drama, all of it is made by independent production companies written by independent writers.

Who makes it is neither here nor there; the point is, they DO NOT make good comedy or drama any more.

If Sadiq Khan spent more time sorting out his own failures and keeping his mouth shut on National Politics it would be a start.

History is being written at the moment. Who knows in 100yrs time the kids could be wandering about in burkas or skull caps practicing Sharia law & having lessons on how Sadiq Khan eradicated all british historical statues & ultimately the Chuch of England.

Lets hope that Sadiq Khan becomes jobless at the next mayoral election. The bloke is only there because London has been systematically filled with ethnic minorities and champagne socialists.

I agree, this is a good time to make the BBC stand on it's own. It is 2020 and absolutely ridiculous to charge a compulsory fee for owning a TV set and if you don't pay it you could be jailed.

The BBC and it's left wing political agenda make it a dinosaur, and don't give me that claptrap about the BBC being great at making comedy and drama, all of it is made by independent production companies written by independent writers.

John Cleese is right, the BBC today is run by lefty bureaucrats not talented innovators. It is an outdated business model that may have worked 50 years ago, today it should compete in the market.

There are hundreds of TV channels in 2020, the BBC licence should be abolished.

Sadiq Khan calls for government to support homeless Europeans

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has today issued a call to the government to provide support for homeless non-UK nationals, as temporary housing plans for rough sleepers come to a close.

More than 50 per cent of the homeless population currently residing in hotels organised by City Hall are from outside the UK, and will be turfed onto the street again if the government does not step in, Khan warned.

Writing for City A.M., he said: “This has long proved a major obstacle to resolving rough sleeping in the capital and is a particularly pressing issue in the current circumstances.”

“Unless further measures are now taken by the government — and extra funding made available — many non-UK nationals will be forced back onto the streets. This would be a disgraceful outcome, blowing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve a major and lasting reduction in rough sleeping in London, as well as across the rest of the country.”

Approximately 1,400 homeless people were housed in London hotels paid for by City Hall and the government during the pandemic. At least three of the 14 hotels will close this month as funding dries out, with the rest set to wind down over the summer.

Khan suggested the government suspend several conditions and tests so that European Economic Area (EEA) citizens do not need to prove their right to reside to access benefits.

He added that additional help should also be provided so that non-UK nationals are able to easily access specialist independent immigration advice.

“Ministers must now ask themselves whether they are prepared to take the action necessary to avert a new rough sleeping crisis. Or are they content to see hundreds of people return to their streets?” he wrote.

You can't rewrite history!!It is what it is andHistory must being told.. statues with slave history must stay where they are or move to a special museum.. but their names on streets ? must be removed.. my opinion.

Yes indeed. A most curious irony.

Fawlty Towers earns reprieve after outcry

The Germans episode of the series was pulled by UKTV, which is owned by the BBC

The Germans episode of the series was pulled by UKTV

The BBC will give shows "offensive content" warnings rather than purge them from platforms after anger over Fawlty Towers being censored alongside other archive comedies.

John Cleese had called BBC bosses "gutless and contemptible" after The Germans, an episode memorable for the line "don't mention the war", was taken down from UKTV's streaming site because it included racial slurs. The 30-minute episode was put under review with the possibility that offending sections would be edited out.

UKTV made a dramatic U-turn last night, announcing that the episode would return "in the coming days" featuring a warning for "potentially offensive content and language".

Cleese, who co-wrote the show and played the lead character Basil Fawlty, said the BBC was pacifying moral panic in the wake of Black Lives Matter instead of standing by the series....

Erm, I think you will find Winston is a name used by lots of people and has nothing to do with your Super Hero.
