We have a local stand alone RSPCA for which we have a monthly standing order. We had our last dog from there and the staff are fantastic. Plus 'we love dogs'....

Finance - Then you don't give much, as any worthwhile charity needs staff.

M2 - that is why I said that I don't know the answer. Something like the WHO is needed, as a minimum, to share information and avoid reinventing the wheel.
The US may try and have the office relocated to their shores?

"As a minimum did he travel and see other world leaders sufficiently or stay behind his desk? I don't know the answer."

Perhaps we should be asking ourselves whether we should be asking the question in the first place. He needs to be accountable but by the right people in the right way. I don't think anyone on this thread, myself included, is in a position to question his actions even though we might be concerned by them. If you take a look at his history on Wiki he seems quite capable to me. He is completely dependent on the actions of governments and leaders and that means he is to some extent limited in authority/capability before he starts. China probably didn't heed is advice and neither did Boris and Trump. I bet he is continually banging his head against a brick wall daily.

Charity is just another name 'Business' without paying large tax bills. I remember my niece worked for a Cancer charity and she left in disgust when she learned what the top brass were earning. I think the top guy was on £300,000 plus. This was years ago.

I personally give to the Salvation Army, their admin costs seem very low and the top dog is not paid "A CEO salary of a comparable sized organisation" remuneration. From what I understand, most of the donation makes it to the cause, I really hope not to discover otherwise one day

Dont know why there are all these health charities with the associated overheads of CEO's and snr management. My Mrs was offered a position at the BHF which paid 70k! and they expect their shops to be manned by volunteers (she didn't accept the offer because of the huge wage disparity thinking it obscene for a charity). If there was only one NHS charity significantly more of the donations would go to the bottom line.

M2 - The WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, seems to have attracted the 'appointed by China' label. As a minimum did he travel and see other world leaders sufficiently or stay behind his desk? I don't know the answer.

Here is the WTO mess - getting on for 20 years!

The WTO Doha Round began in 2001. Subsequent ministerial meetings took place in Cancún, Mexico (2003), and Hong Kong (2005). Related negotiations took place in Paris, France (2005), Potsdam, Germany (2007), and Geneva, Switzerland (2004, 2006, 2008);

Progress stalled. The most significant differences are between developed nations led by the European Union (EU), the United States (US), Canada, and Japan and the major developing countries led and represented mainly by India, Brazil, China, and South Africa.

Since the breakdown of negotiations in 2008, there have been repeated attempts to revive the talks, so far without success. As of January 2014, the future of the Doha Round remains uncertain.

I don't disagree with that but I fail to see what is wrong with the current WHO leader.

M2 - they would just get out voted or held to a stalemate (as WTO). The leaders and experts should be appointed on merit - not on a political balance.
How to get to a merit based management is the issue.

The WHO does what is says on the tin: "World Health". It cannot serve the objective of delivering fair "World Health" if it is continually having to operate under the duress of pulled funding. If Trump - that should read all the United States Government - have an issue with the WHO operation then they should address their concerns fairly and openly and without the threat of pulled funds. If we are not careful all other countries who might see they have been 'hard done by' the WHO may threaten the same and then the ability of the WHO to truly deliver better world health has truly gone.

It needs to be autonomous as much as possible and we need to have trust in those experts and leaders who run it. The WHO were issuing warnings to the West for months and it went on deaf ears by Boris and Trump because they were wishful thinking that the economy could continue as it was. The failure is all theirs, not the WHO's.
