31/3/2020 11:31 | CtR, that is one thing we cannot know, the availability, and like you rightly said, the Fkwits that need it will get it, us lower levels will only get the dregs.. | aljm
31/3/2020 11:26 | There is a lot of noise from several companies about treatments/vaccines for the virus. The big Pharmas are almost silent but are working on it (Roche's, Novartis' etc). The J&J announcement yesterday, after the US funding, about hoping for something by early next year is probably right, unfortunately, in setting expectations. | alphorn
31/3/2020 11:23 | Why don't we use all these youtube covid cures? Well, we had thalidomide fifty years ago, and since then we are very careful not to have anything like it again. I expect if you looked around enough, you could probably find hundreds if not thousands of covid cures around, most of which could potentially be very dangerous. The gov are accelerating testing of covid possibilities, pretty unprecedented, shortening the usual 3 years into 4 or 5 months, which is probably at the limit of the risk they want to take, probably correctly imv. As to a vaccine, we'll see how dangerous covid really is in a year or so, by seeing who gets a free covid jab. I bet it'll be only over 65s and the vulnerable - the healthy young not being at any real risk and not worth spending 75p inoculating them - somewhat at odds with the measures we are taking today. | pierre oreilly
31/3/2020 11:21 | Bank investors ready to accept dividend delay as decision looms Katherine Griffiths, Ben Martin, Patrick Hosking Tuesday March 31 2020, 1 Institutional investors in banks have said that they are prepared to accept dividend payments being halted because of the uncertainty facing the sector. Britain’s biggest banks are due to pay billions of pounds to shareholders in the coming weeks, with Barclays scheduled to pay £1.03 billion on Friday. However, banks are under growing pressure to reconsider dividend payouts, with many big businesses in other sectors already cancelling then. Last night it was reported that the Prudential Regulation Authority could step in to stop dividend payments worth up to £7.5 billion, possibly as early as today. The view of investors is likely to play a role as banks mull whether to axe their planned payouts. | maxk
31/3/2020 11:11 | yup, i remember the BCG jab at school, (showing me age) | aljm
31/3/2020 11:10 | Several very old medicines are being reviewed for effectiveness against the new virus. A six month trial with some 4,000 health workers in hospitals across Australia will be administered the BCG vaccine. An anti-tuberculous vaccine that was given to thousands of British schoolchildren in the past. (The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) jab was developed a century ago to increase immunity to TB — a bacterial lung infection). I am sure many here remember it. I wonder how long the original vaccination is effective? | alphorn
