How should the government support the economy?By JOHNREDWOOD | Published: MARCH 18, 2020The Chancellor's second package of support marshalled up to £330bn of guaranteed loans for a business sector facing shutdown of many enterprises. It offered a welcome holiday for all businesses in the worst affected sectors from business rates for a year. It offered small grants to smaller businesses. This is unlikely to be enough to prevent a wave of job losses from pubs and clubs, hotels and restaurants, from tourist attractions and events. As some of us pointed out in questions to the Chancellor yesterday evening, he needs to come up with a working burden sharing scheme soon that lets businesses with no revenue keep on their workforce waiting for the all clear on the virus.Businesses cannot be expected to borrow indefinitely to pay the wages when there are no customers. They don't need loans, they need revenues. Some restaurants will try take away meals. Some hotels will offer their services to the state as temporary hospitals. Many will contemplate closure to cut costs and reduce losses. The government should do what it takes to avoid this.

not sure that book would address OAP's question. It's more a technicality of the stock exchange.

There are 2 main reasons that come to mind:

trades are published at different times depending on size of trade with resprect to the normal market size. It varies depending on the exchange rules, but 5x maight be delayed an hour. 15x a day and 75x 3 days. There can be other reasons.

The second is worked trades. I might put an other in the morning but it is too large to get a quote. It will be worked throughout the day. After the market closes it will get reported. It may not be the full amount requested, e.g. 1,000,000 asked for but the broker only managed to get 432,823.

A bit of info for anyone who does get it. Do not take NSAIDs Aspirin,Ibuprofen. Low dose of Paracetemol only. There is evidence its good to let your temperature rise, but not beyond 39.5. Vitamin D is a massive boost to imune system if you are deficient

Am not saying this is not serious, it clearly is.

However the amount of people focusing on the worst case scenario on ADVFN is ....predictable.

To make you feel a bit more comfortable we normally have 600.000 deaths a year and many of the 200.000 will just be leaving us a few months early

Amazon hires 100,000 as online orders surge

Simon Duke, Technology Editor
Tuesday March 17 2020, 12.00pm, The Times

Amazon is hiring an extra 100,000 workers in the United States to handle a flood of new orders in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The new staff will meet a surge in demand for shipments, which is expected to place strains on its warehouses and delivery network.

The online retail giant is increasing hourly pay rates for employees in distribution centres and drivers of delivery trucks by $2 an hour from next month. It will also increase pay for UK and European Union staff who work in those positions by £2 and €2 an hour.

In an online post overnight, Amazon said that it had experienced a “significant” rise in demand. At the weekend, the company told customers to expect delays in shipments and

70 to 80% was an estimate for the German population.. but no one knows how this will play for the world in general. Remember, thousands of scientist working day and night for a vaccine..Nothing so far, but even if they manage to come close to find one today it will take 6 months to bring it to the market.

There are several human trials being carried out as we speak. The vaccine is not even derived from the live virus so should be safe. It has had its RNA synthesised in a lab. But the next problem will manufacturing it. And by that we will be talking about the whole worid.

The virus will stop spreading when it has a problem finding a host and that will be when 70 to 80% of us have had it or been vaccinated. That is where Merkel got her 70 figure from

Indeed. And with no vaccine so far, even all scientist round the world working day and night... nothing so far, not even close enough.

Pierre

Perhaps they should be looking to eliminate/suppress the virus than mitigate.

Whatever mitigation you do results in massive deaths and doesn’t establish herd immunity for a very long time. Basically I think we play roulette with financial meltdown regardless of what the pocket sized chancellor can do.

Here, headline on the FT:

Aggressive testing helps Italian town cut new coronavirus cases to zero.

Oh, zero, that would be elimination.

It is you who needs to get with the program, that would be the one being driven by ICL and not a Tory fantasist program.

Because if we have the answer of the Q how many, here comes the answer of the Q of how long.. this will last over a year which will be disastrous for all economies.Let's hope iam 100% wrong.
