That, Alp, sounds almost too good to be true.

To bore posters there are also bond lending programmes where you can increase your yields. Very profitable with almost no risk.

MC - your understanding is correct; all shorts have to be bought back. There is a site that lists shorts somewhere.
Writing call options to open bearish positions is different and naked calls are not backed up other than by your margin. (My naked calls at present are limited to Tesco btw). Naked calls can lapse so are not bought back.

edit: here is a site

1knocker: I guess the platform gains financially from the arrangement? Hence hires rather than lends. I did wonder if that may be the case but would be more pee'd off if it wasn't as at least ii make something and hence ABDN shares would stand to benefit. They need all the help they can get.

There doesn't seem to be any shorting going on atm regarding L&G not of any significance anyway..

'lends' is a euphemism. 'hires out' would express the position more accurately.

Skinny,

I wonder how much truth there is in that.
I'd like to know too.

I believe it was the case that if you left a limit sell order in, they couldn't lend your shares - again - happy to be corrected.

Guys, I'm not an expert by any means and fail to fully understand the nuances of 'shorting'. But, if I understand this correctly, and PLEASE correct me if I am wrong, a 'shorter' borrows a share and sells it now and at a future date hopes to buy it back as a lower price to replace that 'borrowed' share.

Who provides the lent share? I own 11,409 LGEN shares and they are all in my ii SIPP. Is Interactive Investor lending the shorters my shares, and those of others, and if so what say do I have in that?

On the basis I'm correct in what I say and until somebody more knowledgable corrects me it strikes me that when I buy a share on a platform I should have the opportunity to 'clock a box' that indicates I do NOT wish my share to be lent to a shorter.

However, at some point the shorter must buy back the share to replace that borrowed and hence will enter the market as a buyer.

It seems sensible therefore for a company involved in a BB to buy more shares back when there is an increase in the number being shorted. This in turn would to a limited extent 'shaft' the shorter as their purchase would be battling that of the BB company itself.

I wonder if there's any statistics to show daily shorts and the number of shares bought by the company that same day in a BB scheme?

adejuk, couldn't agree more, should ban it, how sad is it to see an institution like L & G being hammered like this taking away "normal" folks money for the sake of the insti's making their profits. Seems like any bit of even mildly negative news on any FTSE100 company the insti's hammer it, totally unjustified.

But as always ineptitude is ignored and rewarded leaving Joe the humble taxpayer/small investor to foot the bill.

Cable and Davey have followed the lead shown by Clegg and have/are not being held accountable.

Simoes needs to buck up his ideas.

Jubber - look at the Post Office Inquiry and your answer is clear. Most executives are of the book licking variety.

I guess that is one reason that co's do buyback's - to allow holders to sell large quantities of shares without adversely affecting the share price imo dyor

I know all ins. co's are down lately as are most financials but we must have a bloody big seller or sellers here holding this back. Hell of a lot of shares traded lately.

Spud, bloody wimmin, eh?
I don't think you are keeping up with the times.
If she reveals that she is gender fluid, has a disabiity, and is in fact mixed race (the more races the better), and that she spends her weekends glued to the road 'stopping' oil, everything will go with a swing. L&G might even attain 'accredited provider' status and receive a (fully costed and funded) climate saving and diversity subsidy from our new lords and masters on or shortly after 5 July.

I don’t expect the BOE interest rate decision will give us a boost and the elections in UK and now in France will create a wait and see approach. If the right wing have control in France could create issues in equities including Uk. A lot of external influences in play and after the CEO strategic review I hope for business as usual on H1 results. PRT continues to grow, expansion US/Canada on course and stabilise the AUM under higher for longer interest rates. Is a firm hold and adding when funds/priority enable GLA

Am not as confident as others appear to be as to how this will all pan out

Is early days but content to add slowly but hesitant as feel could revisit the previous 200-205 level .

Hence keeping additions very small until events provide more clarity.

No rush tempting though it maybe prefer to keep cash to hand under current market uncertainty

As long as dividend is maintained

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it
