Congratulations to ALY on managing to finf a Singapore property on which it is required to make a £4.7mn writedown. Perhaps, it should have concentrated on retailing.

Results out and read very good other than what we already new from previous profit warnings. A brighter future coming here from practically a bankrupt share price

Well LA seemed to have teamed up with Urban Outfitters to be more appealing to the younger people. Have they succeeded ? I think so.

Who's Laura Ashley brand ?

Has it been officially declared that LA is a subsidiary of MUI ?

I know we have counted as this being majority owned for long enough - but I understood that was based on joining the dots now we have the CEO of MUI referring to LA as theirs ?

Am I correct ?

Looks like MUI is serious about making Laura Ashley a lifestyle brand (adding hotels, spas, tearooms etc.).
MUI reorganising and it appears LA will be (remain) one of their core businesses.

Good news imo.

MUI chief executive officer Andrew Khoo Boo Yeow:

“As for the business transformation part, Andrew reveals the group is steering all the brands under its umbrella towards a “lifestyle concept”.

To me, it is not just about owning a collection of established brands, and not just about being in the retail, hospitality, property or food space. We want to start becoming a lifestyle business, and tranform our brands in line with that direction,” he explains” (...)

“According to Andrew, retail and hospitality will remain the driving engines of MUI’s business, but the way these segments grow will be lifestyle-based, as the group seeks to find a unique selling proposition that works.

For its Laura Ashley brand, for instance, the transformation towards a lifestyle concept is already evident in the United Kingdom. Besides women’s fashion and home furnishing, Laura Ashley now operates cafes and hotels business.

The next phase for Laura Ashley, Andrew reveals, is to venture into the spas business.”

If I had married miss Malaysia 1969 there would be more than a risk of her getting tailed...

Well one way would be to have an independently wealthy benefactor who also had a hotel group - put his own money or hotels (in lieu of cash) in.
Now if that benefactor held a majority share (or better yet all the shares) and was also the CEO so he could control how his money or hotels were used......

But what if he was going through a messy expensive divorce - surely that would cost him too much and he would not have the cash ?

However if a lot of his wealth was tied up in an under performing share then the ex missus would have less to claim......

So settle with the wife and then buy the rest of the company and set about developing the hotels afterwards.....
sounds like a plot for a book....

Kirk6 It sounds fab but how are they going to fund it ? Unlikely through any share issue as it's so low ?

This doesn't sound like a company going under? How do people think this large hotel expansion will be funded? Surely with the share price virtually worthless there has to be some value here??

Laura Ashley, the UK-based brand famous for its fabrics, designs and homeware, is targeting Saudi Arabia as part of an expansion plan for its fledgling hotels business.Laura Ashley Hotels, which currently operates two properties in its home market, is planning significant domestic and international growth to open up to 100 hotels over the next five years, reported Hotelnewsnow.com.Laura Ashley principal Nick Turner told the website that another part of the brand's increased presence will be the licensing of Laura Ashley-branded tea rooms, both in its hotels and as standalone offerings. He said the opening of the 62-room Laura Ashley The Belsfield, which sits alongside Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park north of Manchester, convinced him of the timeliness of the brand.Turner was quoted by Hotelnewsnow.com that the Laura Ashley Hotels brand will satisfy international demand for British style, history and heritage.Lake Windermere draws on the popularity of iconic figures as poet William Wordsworth and author Beatrix Potter and Turner said Potter's books are popular in places such as China, South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia, which are all markets Laura Ashley Hotels will target."The reaction has been phenomenal, and internationally there is demand for a global, aspiration, upscale British brand," Turner was quoted as saying. He added that the concept will be exported internationally to the Middle East, Indian Ocean, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia.

Still it may have a positive effect on sentiment this week on some of the retailers. Admittedly Laura Ashley have a lot of convincing to do. Their hotel in bowness is spot on though
