14/9/2010 16:58 | Not very good I am afraid by todays standards. P3 800 Mhz and 256Mb memory. Dell Optiplex GX110. I know it struggles with pages with loads of flash and also Ebay is a nightmare at times with all the adverts etc. Advfn has always been fine but I do have to keep utilities loaded to an absolute minumum, e.g acrobat reader not loaded on start up and removed from mem after veiwing pdf's , also remove quick player etc. Then it works fine but has struggled at times when I have monitor running along with L2 showing 4 or 5 shares, and charts with vol and spread data displayed. I do not normally have monitor running all the time, just occassionally preferring to keep microscope charts displayed. L2 was the real problem, but with clearing everything ininstalling all the java stuff I could find and loading Java5, and then java6 update it appears to have sorted it out with L2 and live charts but not monitor. | jonck
14/9/2010 14:51 | done thanks | jussyman
14/9/2010 13:38 | Jonck, There are older versions, but you might start running into trouble with compatibility the further back you go. The link below will give you access to most of the previous versions of Java. John | jgpgw
14/9/2010 13:17 | John, I have installed java 5 and it works fine, but a big but, it makes my processor run at 100% using monitor and fluctuates between 50 and 100% using L2. Bit of a pain really, but so seem to be making progress. Going to try latest again. | jonck
14/9/2010 11:45 | Ahh! now there a good idea I never explored. Thanks for the link. | jonck
14/9/2010 10:54 | Hi Jonck, Windows 7 has a virtual version of XP that comes with it so you can run older programs, 2000 is ten and a half years old now though, I'm not sure if they have compatibilty for that built in. You could also run a dual boot, so have Windows 2000 installed on a computer alongside 7 or something else. You can then select the OS you want at start up. I do this with Unbuntu and XP at home and it works a treat. Try for some more info or google "dual boot windows 7 and windows 2000". John | jgpgw
14/9/2010 10:34 | Hi John, I will give the older version a try, and later also check out this item I read on the sun site regarding coding compatitibity. I totally agree you are right about considering upgrading my computer, but I have always taken the view why upgrade when not required. It is catch 22 as I also have old software I need an older machine (win2k or earlier) for so means running two computers. If it ain't broke don't fix it!! Well you have just broken it...LOL. | jonck
14/9/2010 09:47 | Jonck, You should be able to download Sun Java from the link below: It should work with Windows 2000, but if not you might want to try an older version of the software. 1.5.22 (which was released about 5 years ago) might do the trick. (Select Windows) If you are running Windows 2000 though with IE6 it could be worth thinking about upgrading your computer as you will find that websites and programs stop being compatible with your system over time. 14/9/2010 07:03 | further info. If open L2, monitor or charts, the I get a pop up window titles 'install on demand'. If I click Ok, it then downloads a small file and I am taken to a new page which opens up and is the microsoft webpage with details on how to install Java running ie7 or 8. If I close that window then the advfn streaming works. If I cancel teh install on demand, I get a advfn popup! or screen shot, saying installing Java is required. If I click Ok then it takes me to the SUn Java site to install latest update. It then tells me I already have the latest update. So how do I get round the problem of this install on demand as it happens every time I refresh the advfn monitor or charts. e.h seitch from monitor to microscope and then back again. This install on demand appears to be something advfn can get around by avoiding the use of a certain type of code...I cannot find it now on the java help pages but is related to plugins being treated as HTML code rather than java in ie6 and have to be manually installed rather than bein automatic. Sorry if not making sense, I do not really know what I am doing. | jonck
14/9/2010 06:45 | I am using a computer with win2K and ie6, Java plugins will not work properly using java VM. It did work with Microsoft VM, although slow to load the monitor page, I followed instructions to remove Microsoft VM. I wish I had not as now cannot reinstall it. Snookered. Really annoyed because as I pay a subscription to get L2 etc we should have been told the plans to switch of the support. Not least it also comes on a week when markets are looking bouyant and need the data. SO now L2 etc is useless to me. Any suggestions to help me get round this problem apart from buying a new computer with later technology. | jonck
13/9/2010 16:17 | Got it sorted now thanks. Cheers Jon C | jonc
13/9/2010 16:11 | Hi JonC, What kind of problem are you having with the Monitor, are you getting the security warning about using an older version of java? To uninstall it you should just need to go to Add or Remove programs in Control Panel (for Windows XP). If that doesn't seem to be working let me know what happens when you try, or if you are using a different OS and don't know how to remove software let me know. John | jgpgw
13/9/2010 16:08 | Hi JonC, First of all, close your browser (you might want to note down these steps or copy them into Notepad first). Right click on the Java icon in your system tray at the bottom right of your screen, it looks like a coffe cup. If it's not there go to Start (> Settings) > Control Panel > Java. Select the Security tab. Remove the ADVFN certificate you see there. Click Close on the first window and then OK on the second. Re-open your browser and go to the ADVFN monitor. You should be asked to accept the certificate again. Let me know if this doesn't do the trick, John | jgpgw
13/9/2010 16:06 | Edit reboot has done that. However i dont seem to be able to delet the OEM Java 1.6 | jonc
13/9/2010 16:00 | I have tried to do what nicksig did and have lost my ADVFN Certificates. How do I force them to reload? JonC | jonc
13/9/2010 15:57 | okay john.cheers | standtall
13/9/2010 15:55 | Thanks John. Fixed! | nicksig
13/9/2010 15:43 | standtall, It could be worth restting your router or calling your ISP then, we don't have any problems with transmitting the data here. John | jgpgw
13/9/2010 15:36 | john i have done the works even running bare with no protection and everything dissabled it was fine untill last week coincidentally when i got offers from advfn for l2 lite. | standtall
13/9/2010 15:31 | nicksig, From the message you are getting it sounds like you might have the OEM version of Java 1.6. I would uninstall it from Control Panel on your computer and re-install it from www.java.com. If you need any more info about how to uninstall it just let me know. esanlfc, You should be able to have quite a few pages open at once, but the more you have open the more strain it will put on your computer. They'll be a limit past which things will stop working properly, but that will depend on your PC and the amount of other things you have running. standtall, In my experience you would only get a message telling you you have a weak connection if that is in fact the case. Try closing pages you are not using and consider disabling anything that uses your connection in the background (automatic updates for instance). John | jgpgw
13/9/2010 15:25 | no coincidence ive had a barrage of emails and calls asking me 2 upgrade 2 l2 lite.lol | standtall |
