And anyone thinking Ukraine is the bastion of angelic purity, Zelenskyy himself, a tv comedian, has $1.6bn tucked away in offshore tax havens according to the Pandora Papers. Other Ukrainian oligarchs similar.

Ukraine was listed a 2nd most corrupt nation in Europe only beaten by Albania. It isn't the Russians doing that, Ukraine had been independant for a long time now.

But this board should be about financials, not butthurt armchair politicians. Go to twitter.

The MOEX Russia index was 0.7% lower at below the 2,200 mark, set to close the week 1% lower amid pressure from energy producers and metallurgists.

The oil and gas average at the Moscow Exchange is set to close the week 2.9% lower, significantly underperforming the broader index as investors continued to assess the darkened outlook for the sector ahead of the start of the EU oil embargo in less than three weeks. Besides the halt of seaborne oil exports to EU states, companies will be prohibited from using Western tankers and insurance services on deliveries to Asia.

The EU announced it is set to place a cap on natural gas prices at the end of the month, further pressuring energy giants. Novatek and Tatneft both fell over 1% in the session.

When the Ukraine became part of the USSR is was not viable as a full SSR, therefore Lennin passed over what is now Eastern and Southern Ukraine over to the Ukrainian SSR to make it become a viable republic within the USSR.

If the government in Kiev had left Crimea as a fully autonomous republic within the Ukraine and basically let the two Dombass oblasts to do the same then it seems to me reasonable to say there would have been no armed conflict going on in the Ukraine as it is today - the fault firmly lies with the government in Kiev as what did they do in these areas, burnt any Russian language books, stopped the Russian language being used in official circles and at school.

In the UK, the government in London allows Welsh speaking schools in Wales, devolved parliaments and assemblies etc is how a country keeps a 'Union' together.

Totalgeek69, I'd rigorously factcheck every single sentence posted by loganair if I were you. He's been posting all sorts of bizarre stuff but NEVER posts a source. He has no credibility.

Thanks for responding Loganair. So Ukraine which was originally conquered by the Ottomans was gifted to the Ukrainians by Russia whilst part of the USSR or later the CIS. It seems to be that there was probably an understanding that this happened because Russia considered the Ukrainians to be with them always and that Russia naively thought this would always be the case. It is a shame Kiev decided to take all their people in another direction. It might have been better to allow parts not wanting to go in that direction the ability to self govern. I have read many articles on how these areas have been forced to learn Ukrainian etc;... I guess eventually peace will be found and a line drawn.

Upon Ukrainian independence in 1991 the Crimea was recognised as a fully autonomous republic within the Ukraine which was abolished by the government in Kiev a few years later, with the government in Kiev becoming more and more forcibly controlling over Crimea against the wishes of the peoples of Crimea is why we are where we are today when it comes to the Crimea - Totally and completely the fault of the government in Kiev.

This is how the government in London treated Ireland and why we now have the Republic of Ireland which is no longer part of the UK.

Most senior people in the West have already said that Crimea will remain Russian and not be returning to the Ukraine and except for a few people in the Ukrainian Government, so does the Ukraine.

All the areas that Russia currently hold, including the Donbass and the rest of the South and East of the Ukraine were part of Russia until 1921 when Lenin passed these areas over to the Ukrainian SSR to make the Ukraine a viable republic within the USSR.

The exception to this was Crimea which was part of Russia until 1954 which was passed on to the Ukraine by the president of Russia who was a Ukrainian as was the deputy president at the time.

As for the Donbass, upon Ukrainian independence the two oblasts of the Donbass wanted to become Federal Republics within the Ukraine which was not accepted by the government in Kiev and it was this rejection by Kiev that was the seed to what has been happening in the region ever since.

Basically the two oblasts of the Donbass wanted to become what Scotland is today, they wanted a fully devolved parliament to set their own agenda while still being apart of the Ukraine which the government in Kiev rejected time and time again.

Interesting post Masergt. Can you tell me the year that the Donbas region was part of Ukraine before the 1991 independence vote. You seem very knowledgeable.

As per usual, loganair NEVER posts links, NEVER answers questions, NEVER takes notice of any contra that we post. Just c&p's of MOEX numbers and Russian fin articles and carries on lying through his teeth and obediently pushing out Putin's message.

If the Ukranians really are lining up Russian supporters and shooting them, (lol), is there a way we can get loganair into that line up?

brwo349, if you think Loganair in another reality you should see the Russian millbloggers, they are another level of vodka induced insanity. They claim every retreat is only to create a kill zone, but opposite happens ie Russians withdrawn 15km from Dnipro as 155mm excalibur have complete fire control over that area and Himars are striking Crimea supply route at will.

Israel finally publicly picked a side

The apparent catalyst for change in the Lapid government was Iran’s decision to arm Russia with drones. Reznikov said Iran has sold at least 300 drones to Moscow, which are targeting civilians and key infrastructure sites in Ukraine.

The MOEX Russia index closed 0.6% lower at 2,213 on Thursday, extending its retreat from the two-month high this week with pressure from miners and metallurgists.

Base metal producers Mechel and Rusal further trimmed last week’s rally and fell nearly 3%, leading the losses for the sector. The former was also pressured by the Russian government, set to raise taxes on coking and thermal coal in the first quarter of 2023. Also, Norilsk Nickel tracked the further decline for the LME benchmark and dropped 2%.

Among oil stocks, Tatneft fell 2% as investors further digested dividend announcements from the company’s board, while Transneft rebounded 0.2% from yesterday’s fall as flows via the Druzhba pipeline to Europe restarted.

In the meantime, geopolitical tensions continued to show a limited impact on Russian equities after NATO officials believed it was a stray Ukrainian missile that hit Polish territory.

I can find half a dozen links from reputable sources describing Russian atrocities in Kherson. You can't post a single one describing Ukrainian atrocities.

It is being reported since the Russian's left the West Bank of Kherson, the armed forces of the Ukraine have killed/murdered some 740 civilians in the Kherson Oblast because they are pro-Russia, support Russia and that a further 1,200 civilians are now missing.

Russia again bombing the Ukraine power infrastructure today. If there is a bad winter there could be countless deaths due to lack of power. I'm surprised the rest of the world are not doing more to stop this evil. Ukraine special forces should be taking out power generators in Moscow and St Petersburg.

'Soberly' one way of putting it.
Russian economy continues it quiet collapse. The Central bank has started quietly bailing out state budgets via loans to commercial banks to buy state debt. 1.3 trillion roubles first batch.

The MOEX Russia index was little changed around the 2,228 level for a second session on Thursday, as investors continue to assess risks that heightened geopolitical tension could bring to the Russian economy.

On the macro front, preliminary figures showed that GDP shrank by 4% from a year earlier in Q3, in line with forecasts by the Central Bank of Russia. Across sectors, an over 2.5% loss across construction companies was offset by gains in consumer goods and services Magnit gaining 2.5%, alongside chemicals and financials.

Elvira Nabiullina, the country's top central banker, said Tuesday the country needs to look at the economic situation "very soberly with open eyes" and be prepared for any development.

"Yes, the situation can worsen, we understand this," Nabiullina told Russian lawmakers, adding it was necessary to restructure the economy.

Russia's central bank expects the country's economy to contract by 3% to 3.5% in 2022, Nabiullina said on Tuesday.

Another night of heavy missile attacks on Ukrainian power grid and energy infrastructure.

Poland is being used by Zelensky - Who benefits from the rocket going into Poland - only the Ukraine.

The Ukraine is carrying out provocation again and again to get NATO to intervene, to provoke the world against Russia.
