23/2/2021 08:09 | Not often you get to front run the Master! Should You Follow Buffett Into Energy Stocks? - Oilprice.com For decades, Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO Warren Buffett maintained a pretty conservative approach to investing, favouring retail and banking stocks while avoiding sectors such as tech and energy. However, he finally pulled the trigger on PetroChina Co in 2002 and Apple in 2011. The Oracle's foray into energy and tech initially paid off after he realized a tidy $3.5B profit on PetroChina, while his $90 billion Apple stake now represents a ridiculous 20% of Berkshire Hathaway's market value. However, Buffett has lately been doubling down on his energy investments while trimming his tech and banking holdings. After a period of relative calm last year, Warren finally announced some long-awaited investments, including a $4.1 billion investment in Chevron Inc, good for a nearly 2.5% stake in the giant oil company. Chevron is now the conglomerate's 10th biggest equity holding. Meanwhile, Buffett trimmed its holding in Apple and Wells Fargo according to Berkshire Hathaway's latest filing. Berkshire Hathaway has always operated on Buffett's famous ethos of buying when the market is fearful and selling when it gets greedy. It, therefore, came as a huge surprise that the giant conglomerate remained muted when the market crashed in April despite sitting in a massive $137 billion cash hoard. But it appears that the energy sector has become too much of a bargain for Buffett to continue ignoring. It's also a clear sign that Buffett sees long-term value in a sector that's been taking plenty of flak lately. Buffett is not the only billionaire who's doubling down on energy. Occidental Petroleum, Energy Transfer, PG&E Corporation are now in David Tepper's top 12 holdings.' | ![]() mount teide

18/2/2021 11:14 | Or in my case, FB, living with no street frontage, and with no garage or driveway. Maybe I can park at a communal site and get a taxi to my house. On the other hand, the cardboard is great, and I can pick any hedgerow I like for a night's sleep ;-) Peak oil is determined by oil price, because the definition of "reserves" is "economically producible hydrocarbons". If oil were $200/bbl, the peak would be shoved to the right. Where there seems to be a decoupling in the industry is between gas (= "good") and oil (apparently = "bad"), and it's interesting to see how different companies are positioning themselves. So where in 5217 you ask whether "a distressed NOC or supermajor is likely to pay over the odds for the company to make up its shortfall in reserves", the answer would be not all of them, given JSE is on current assets mostly an oil producer | ![]() spangle93
18/2/2021 11:02 | I'm no peak oilers, MT. I know the rest of the world is laughing all the way to their banks over our prostration in the face of a sour-faced Swedish teenage brat astride her $2m catamaran..I've seen the whole population of the UAE driving around in their 5.7 litre Toyota, Nissan and Lexi.. Where some of the models are the same as we can buy ours are powered by the same rubber bands we installed in our balsa wood aeroplanes in our youth..I'm imagining tge blocks of flats, each with a charging cabled topping the 15 floors to the street below where the residents' evs are parked. What fun! | ![]() fardels bear |
