Matthewr, so you had to look it up you self styled Buffett, by that I mean you are a small hors d'ouvre perched on a counter going stale at a penny share ponce drinks party.

Thiry years at ML and you have to do research lol...the easiest profit for a market maker is to buy from a seller at the bid price, then quickly turn around and sell to a buyer at the ask price. But it’s the nature of the business that sometimes you build up positive or negative inventory. If it gets large you can hedge it, or you can lay it off in which case you pay the bid/ask spread instead of earning it. These trades are hanging!!!!

Different market makers have different risk tolerances. Some will take large positions and hold them for days, others want to be near flat all the time, and always flat at the end of the day. The big market makers all hold substantial position overnight or over weekends if need be.

“Algorithms221; can mean computer programs for executing orders. Many of these algorithms can extend orders out for many days or weeks. For example, if a large institutional investor wants to sell millions of shares, it might well allow its algorithm to break it up into many smaller orders of different types over days or weeks. But for smaller amounts the same algorithm might do all the trades in one day.

“Algorithms221; can also mean systematic trading strategies—as opposed to order execution. Some systematic trading strategies have horizons of fractions of a second high-frequency trading, some minutes or hours rapid trading, some a day or days but most of the large ones take positions over weeks or months, sometimes longer.

Matthewr, I know the market and have been a successful trader for years, you may think you know it all, but you don't and the one thing you don't know is the facts at hand regarding a coming for this little TV show called ITV.

Stay long, and stan, don't forget your medication.

Well aren’t I lucky being Called a “penny share ponce.”
So , GF says that what he actually meant was that the naughty MArket Makers have been caught out with “hanging trades.”
Interesting. Having spent the best part of 30 years on the trading desk at Merrill Lynch , I’ve never once heard the term “hanging trades.” Not once.EVER.
So I just looked it up.
They do exist. They are labelled H.
But this is under FINRA rules , ie the US. So absolutely zero to do with the UK market whatsoever , (where they don’t exist). Secondly , the term “penny stock,” is actually US terminology for small caps , so again not a UK term really. And some people still want to hang their hat on what he says……

I’ll leave you all to draw your own conclusions.
