24/6/2017 18:43 | Lumentum 'Best Play' On Apple 3D Sensor Market, Price Target Hiked REINHARDT KRAUSE 6/22/2017 Lumentum Holding (LITE) is the "best vehicle to play the near-term iPhone 3D sensing opportunity," said Stifel, which hiked the company's price target on Thursday. Apple (AAPL) is said to be interested in 3D sensors for facial recognition as well as augmented reality for the iPhone 8, which is expected to be rolled out this fall. While Lumentum has discussed its 3D sensor market opportunity, it has not named Apple as a possible customer. Finisar (FNSR), another fiber-optic parts maker, is also ramping up production of 3D devices but hasn't talked directly about Apple. Patrick Newton, a Stifel analyst, hiked his price target on Lumentum to 73 from 53. He increased Viavi Solution's (VIAV) target to 11 from 9.50. Lumentum shares inched down 5 cents to close at 62.45 on the stock market today. Viavi shares gained 0.9%. "Our research continues to indicate Viavi is the primary filter supplier for the forthcoming iPhone given superior technology and patents," said Newton in the report. Lumentum is the former communications and commercial optical business of JDS Uniphase, which restructured in August 2015. JDS Uniphase spun off Lumentum as well as its test and measurement business, which became Viavi. "Our research indicates Finisar will initially have a lower operating margin than Lumentum due with its (3D sensor) offering due to lower scale from its manufacturing facility," added Newton. The core business of Finisar and Lumentum is optical communications for telecom networks and data centers. Consumer electronics and smartphones would be a new market opportunity. | gersemi

23/6/2017 17:17 | Article in this week's IC (out Today) on 5G opportunities, includes this... "...There is also a growing need for chip makers to develop the hardware needed to utilise the new high-speed network. At the Mobile World Congress in March, Intel excited the market with a demonstration of 5G in use for autonomous cars and virtual reality. Apple is working on next-generation chips which will ensure future iPhones can host 5G. And in the UK, chipmakers including IQE(IQE) are well placed to develop the host of new chips that will be required to enable the IoT." | someuwin
23/6/2017 15:19 | that shares mag article could push this much higher next week Do we know what sort of revenue per iPhone is likely? I've said all along that the 3.5p eps for 2018 is ridiculous Now the analyst has a range 3.5p-15p! They're not exactly sticking their neck out | big7ime
23/6/2017 15:17 | Some good posts above :-) thanks As I have been saying for ages Apple will just be the 1st with3D sensing - EVERYONE will HAVE to follow , the market is simply huge. The only surprise is that the competitors are only a hairbreadth behind the fruit "the highlight of most smartphones in the next half year is 3D sensor technology, which will further improve iris recognition, face recognition to make up the fingerprint scanner shortage of bezel-less screen" Huawei are Apples biggest competitor , no surprise its them 2nd out of blocks, of course we already feature in their backend RF PA's via Skyworks The other big use of VCSELS which is just in its infancy but is about to explode as its cost decreases is LIDAR primarily in autonomous driving , with that in mind and the question posed by Someuwin above , then one of the big companies I suggest is Google :-) Don't agree with all this but it's a good read and it does show Google's position S | sweenoid

23/6/2017 14:25 | If taken literally, it will be direct with the OEM, as opposed to the 1st tier supplier. | desperate dan
23/6/2017 14:21 | The most pertinent part of that paragraph are the words 'engaged directly' but more importantly Edison present it as a statement of fact rather than an informed judgement. Now what does 'engaged directly' actually mean in the commercial world? Face to face negotiations concluding with a direct, contractually based commercial relationship? Is the relationship centred and focused on a specific commercial project? Could that be Apple's iphone8? who knows | gersemi
23/6/2017 14:10 | gersemi's post #2764 last night quoting Edison report from November last year... "...IQE is currently engaged directly with a number of OEMs (as opposed to the more common chip/component vendor relationship) on projects relating to high-volume end-markets." Is extremely interesting! Anyone know / guess any more about what these might be? | someuwin

23/6/2017 12:29 | This is the relevant discussion in the Welsh Assembly about IQE, including the answer given by Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretay for Economy and Infrastructure: "Adam Price Bywgraffiad Biography If we could move, finally, to another major project, could the Cabinet Secretary update us on the compound semiconductor foundry and cluster project announced as part of the Cardiff city region city deal? I understand that the city region team are in negotiation with your own property team over the acquisition of the packaging and testing building on the old LG site, which has been empty since 1996. Now, this project, linked as it is, according to industry sources, with a major IQE contract for its vertical-cavity cell technology, which will be intrinsic to the 3D sensing camera in the new iPhone 8 has huge potential—tran 13:53 Ken Skates Bywgraffiad Biography This is one of the most important projects on my desk at present. It’s a huge opportunity, not just for Newport, not for the city region, but for the whole of Wales. This represents our move, our transition, to the economy of the twenty-first century, where automation, where robotics, where information technology will become ever more important. My officials are in contact with IQE, but I am personally as well, with a view of ensuring that this incredible opportunity is delivered for Newport and for the rest of Wales." 23/6/2017 12:09 | I have just sent a detailed e-mail to Carwyn Jones detailing my concerns as a born and bred Newportonian, ( recently escaped ;-)) Welshman and IQQE investor, we shall see how he responds. the world is full of jobsworths , let's hope some minor self-important tw*ts in regional government don't scupper a wonderful opportunity. As an investor however the increased capacity WILL happen so my investment won't be affected in any meaningful way. Have a good weekend- c'mon the Lions S | sweenoid
