very low volume. Maybe a Minervini signal - pre spike.

If there are any positive surprises in Apple announcement, it will be big help for q4 as they must ship to the supply chain likely already happened and happening for christmas sales... let's hope for the good stuff!

Strange to see the pressure on the share price today, but I have resigned myself to 50-60p range bound now at least until Dec update.

Tom, in reality 5G will be disappointing for some time to come, I would imagine it will be 5 years in the UK before most users can access it reliably also the apparent huge speed increases are a bit misleading and it will be a similar time frame until a critical mass of mmwave antenna are out there, which is what drives the those theoretical speed increases.

I shouldn’t worry too much about iPhone sales, upgrades etc as the volume is pretty steady now, as Sweenoid says people want the latest things. This year people will be sold on 5G whether they use it or not but also the form change which always gives sales a boost. I almost always buy the latest now just because for the computer power on offer (and upgrades in camera quality each iteration) and how much I can sell the prior years for it ends up being £400 extra each year which I can easily afford. I use the device so often that at £1.14 upgrade cost per day it doesn’t take much justification 😂

Sf5 Totally agree However many in areas with little or no 5G coverage WILL buy the new iPhone12 ...simply because it’s the new iPhone- period, lots of contracts onthe ‘old’ one will be closing and some / many upgrade...to upgrade. No doubt the better processing power, better camera and AR functionality will appeal. Apparently the new one will recognise your face ‘faster’ than the old one.😂 that will appeal to those that need a nanoseconds advantage...those people exist! It’s all lost on little old me, who is holding out with NO smartphone and no plans to buy one, iOS or otherwise. Globally and that’s the KEY to sales, 5G IS rolling out at pace especially in Asia. We know 60% of smartphones sold in China in H1 were 5G and that’s a massive market. In summary the lack of 5G rollout in the US and GB will have diddly squat effect on sales ( which WILL be massive ) of the new iPhone, here or anywhere else in the world. 😉✅ S

General advice is it's not worth upgrading an iphone on 5G grounds just yet in USA as coverage is so poor. I imagine UK is no better (often I struggle even to get a 3G signal, just 20 miles from London) hTTps://www.theverge.com/2020/10/12/21511946/5g-iphone-12-upgrade-speed-network-mmwave-hype

Another interesting article on the Apple effect- this time on 5G rollout hTtps://www.mwee.com/news/new-iphones-be-definitive-moment-5g-rollout/page/0/1?fnid=132476 This comment is interesting as it shows demand for iPhone in its current itineration has remained strong the iPhone 11 has proved to have great longevity, still selling over one million devices per week on the brink of a refresh. The SE and iPhone 11 helped maintain momentum through Q3 as the general market remained negative." Of course the SE does NOT have Face ID ( but will have an IQE CS PA)While the 11 has both. S

I hope the top two phones are LIDAR even though several of the leakers suggest it may be just the max (which personally makes no sense to me). I concur re cars but also as someone mentioned yesterday retail shops offer another high volume LIDAR avenue. This would see multiple cameras even per small unit up to hundreds in large superstores). Of course it would mean large savings to offset the installation expense of no checkout staff.

As we await the ‘Apple’show at 6pm and hopefully ( it’s a dead cert isn’t it?) the introduction of VCSEL enabled LIDAR in the top 2 of the range, it’s interesting that Lumentum are showing today at Brussels and have this to say on another key LIDAR market at the Autotrans’ virtual event. Unfortunately it isn’t available free to stream, hopefully it will be in the coming days How can the latest generation of high power VCSEL chips address the challenges of automotive LiDAR systems? As significant progress towards ADAS level 3 consumer vehicles is made, more automotive OEMs are looking at LiDAR technology. We are seeing cost-driven LiDAR approach without sacrificing performance: size, location, eye safety and reliability are still key design targets. To meet those stringent requirements, a practical and scalable approach to photonic integration is required. Significant progress has been made toward commercialization of LiDAR systems for early deployment in autonomous shuttles, robotaxis, and high-end, ADAS level 2-3 consumer vehicles. We will discuss photonic solutions used in automotive LiDAR applications with focus on the light sources which meet the design challenges for next-gen, wide-scale, extended range 3D sensing applications. I love the use of SIGNIFICANT twice in that intro As for tonight , I guess the ‘holy grail’ for IQE is All phones with Face ID - forward facing VCSELS The aforementioned LIDAR in the PRO AND PRO MAX world facing TOF -time of flight in as many models as possible. Of course that’s just the photonics side, IQE WILL be providing for the advanced 5G power amplifiers in ALL the models too ✅ If Apple focus on Augmented Reality and Computational Photography, IQE are shoes in 👏😉🤔 S

I read two articles over the weekend laying out how in the mid term shops will be relying on cameras (likely with VCSEL / Lidar) arrays to do away with checkouts. There are already solutions that are not as expensive as the one Amazon uses in their new checkoutless stores. I do think within 5 years the landscape for IQE could look far rosier than now. The issue will be whether to hold for that period or learn our lessons on the past few years and trade in an out...

Media Tek , UMC and VIS in Taiwan all post record revenues for the month of sept and 3Q, no let up in business in the Far East , Media Tek up 61% on the year , one can see the effects of 5g and IOT is having on the tech market place . May it continue

Thanks Maxwell For yesterday’s link to Apple and the VCSEL supply chain It certainly emphasises the strength and continued GROWTH of the VCSEL market, one that IQE leads. ( in terms of epitaxy and wafers- others produce the modules and end products) I thought there were some interesting ‘new’ information in that article and some omissions Of course the good news is the strength of Lumentum in the Apple supply chain but very interesting is that a company called TRUMPF are supplying a descent % , I didn’t know anything about then , I assumed Himax were number 3 supplier of WLO and 3D sensing solutions, Trumpf are worth watching , I shall keep an eye on this company, I would be near 100% certain that IQE is their major VCSEL wafer supplier, not difficult to work out, as Apple will more or less INSIST on VCSELS from either us or 11-V1 hTtps://www.trumpf.com/en_GB/products/vcsel-solutions-photodiodes/ The other and perhaps much more interesting company mentioned is another newbie to me and a very interesting company - VERTILITE hTtps://www.vertilite.com/Company/ VERTILITE IS interesting because it is going to be a major supplier of 3D sensing/ TOF / world facing solutions to ANDROID smartphone suppliers, Huawei are hamstrung by Trumps regulations, VERTILITE can circumvent issues by manufacturing Chinese solutions. This is going to be most important for VCSEL TOF applications for computational photography. Most of IQE’s VCSELS are produced in the USA but are also produced in Britain. IQE make a point of repeatedly saying that they are agnostic to different customers and operating systems. Although the expansion in Taiwan has been primarily for the ‘ wireless business’ , the rationale was to have increased production that is NOT affected by USA laws. We know wafers produced in Taiwan are being used by a major Chinese Fab ( unnamed but fairly obvious who it’s likely to be) primarily for 5G use. I would not be surprised to see a further expansion in Taiwan for VCSELS. The buyout in Taiwan, ensuring 100% ownership is looking to be a very astute move IMHO&DYOR. I see nothing in the markets that makes me concerned about the business we are in, quite the contrary, reliance on smartphones, iPads and more importantly the consumption and use of digital media and communication , necessitating massive data storage issues, will ALL be exponentially increased by COVID-19 and its sequelae , sad...but true.!
