ABB CEO Looks For Acquisitions; No Plans To Buy "Third Leg"

ZURICH (Dow Jones)--ABB Ltd. (ABB) continues to look for acquisitions, but has no plans to expand into a new business field, Chief Executive Joe Hogan said at an investor event Friday.

"Don't expect us to buy a 'third leg'--we won't move into the medical business," Hogan said.

The Swiss company's two main arms provide power and automation services.

Finally, after years of trying to decode the missives of Donkey I finally understand what the great sage doth mean. A bidding war for Invensys so gigantic that it will raise the Invensys share price above its plimsoll line thus swamping our bank accounts with wonger. Glory be to the Donkey.

I have a dream that one day even the Invensys share price, a value suppressed with the weight of recession, suppressed with the weight of the pension deficit, will be transformed into an oasis of growth and pension surplus.

I have a dream that my hundred thousand little Invensys shares will one day inhabit a stockmarket where they will not be judged by their pension fund but by the content of their order book.

Now where is that carrot.

5:1 SELLING:BUYING ratio so far this morning, normal service has resumed.

As yet, not even a takeover rumour can help here.

ENGINEER Invensys topped the blue chip gainers board yesterday, rising more than 7 per cent as investors piled in on talk of overseas bid interest.

Swiss industrials group ABB, which has cash to spend but missed out to US rival Emerson in its recent bid to buy UK power systems supplier Chloride, was flagged up as a likely buyer.

It has also been linked with temporary power group Aggreko. ABB, however, face competition from the likes of Siemens.

The bid rumour was timely for Invensys, up 18½p to 269¼p, as it looked to have secured its top flight survival at today's quarterly index reshuffle.

Is a predator circling Invensys?

The engineering group was London's best-performing blue chip today amid whispers that a 350p-a-share bid could be on the horizon.

The most likely suitors are General Electric and Swiss industrial giant ABB, which this summer was pipped to Chloride by Emerson Electric.

Invensys's shares climbed 10.4p to 261p, with 6 million shares changing hands by noon, more than would usually trade in a day.

Today's rise could spare the company relegation from the FTSE 100 at this month's reshuffle, decided on tonight's closing prices.

Invensys boosted by bid talk.
Published: 9:15PM BST 06 Sep 2010

Invensys may fall out of the FTSE 100 following this week's reshuffle but some sources reckon the company is a takeover target.

The shares have fallen significant in recent months, meaning potential acquirers are likely to be running their "slide rule" over the business.

According to market sources, possible acquirers include Swiss industrial conglomerate ABB, GE or Emerson Electric. Siemens has also been tipped likely bidder as it is likely to have an interest Invensys's rail division. Invensys rose 3.9 to 250.6p
