Hill and Smith shares tumbled this morning after the infrastructure supplier flagged challenges in its UK business.

On an underlying basis, pre-tax profit rose 10 per cent to £63.2m in the six months ended June, while revenue stayed broadly level, rising 0.4 per cent to £422.7m.

But in a statement, the London-listed firm said its UK segment had experienced a “more challenging market backdrop, with reduced demand across certain public sector customers.”

“The second half outlook for our UK businesses is likely to remain challenging given budgetary pressures in the public sector, however we are cautiously optimistic for some level of recovery in 2025,” it added.

Still a LTBH. I thought 'good but not as good as I'd hoped'. Next year will be stronger with Trident and other acquisitions. Solid and impressive company.

Hill & Smith offering value, says Peel Hunt

Specialist barrier manufacturer Hill & Smith (HILS) is offering ‘tremendous217; value, according to Peel Hunt.

Analyst Harry Philips retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and increased the target price from £23.10 to £25 on the stock, which inched up 0.2% to £21 on Friday.

It reported a positive start to the year, which allowed it to nudge current-year guidance higher. Earnings guidance for the year is expected to be slightly ahead of the current top-end estimate of £134.7m.

‘The backdrop is as expected, with strong market demand for infrastructure products in North America and a still tough UK,’ said Philips, who increased his earnings per share forecast.

‘Hill & Smith is a proven compounder, having delivered a 10-year [pre-tax earnings] compound annual growth rate of 11% from 2014,’ he said.

‘We are confident that this can be at least sustained given the company’s exposure to the growth dynamics within North American infrastructure and the fact that the company is not firing on all cylinders given the still tough end-market environment in the UK.’

He said the ‘quietly impressive compounder’ is offering ‘tremendous value’.

HILS: As per last year’s AGM statement: 2023 AGM statement “we expect full year 2023 operating profit to be modestly ahead of the top end of analyst expectations”. This year's AGM statement “we expect full year 2024 operating profit to be slightly ahead of the top end of analyst expectations”. Worth noting that in that time since the May 2023 AGM TU, the share price has appreciated something like 40%. Still looking rather attractive IMO.
