I believe the discourse started with an
entirely on-topic exploration of whether
the Chinese would regard Griffin as an
Australian company or not, with several
posters putting different points in what
was a complex patchwork of national
identifiers. Then someone decided they
wanted to attack other posters by nit-
picking, point scoring, and outright
misrepresentation, which is where these
things usually go off the rails.

upset them from your post, and instead conveyed
it to me privately. I would not seek an apology
or be interested in one.

There is no need to sadden innocent bystanders
and then try to soften it with an apology, when
you can avoid the offence in the first place.

saying you don't believe it, or that you do?

Burnchat- Your message, quite aside from what
you are trying to say, may also convey your
level of literacy. You are accentuating the
garble in this case for effect, of course, but
using correct spelling and good grammar helps
the reader understand what you are saying without
little distractions from the substance, and it
actually gives your words more weight.

but here are some samples of thank-you notes from
writers whose typos I had reported-

"Thanks for this, by the by. Fixed!"

"Thank you - will change now"

"Thank you for alerting us to it."

"Thanks for catching that. The post has been updated.
Have a great day!"

"Thanks so much! Ugh, that is an unfortunate typo."

People who live by their writing are usually happy
to have such help. Expressions of resentment or
annoyance are amateurish, so I seldom bother trying to
help amateurs.

There are a lot of stories about Shakespeare, mostly
apocryphal. Very little is actually known about his
life. There is a great book by Bill Bryson that tries
to sort out the facts.

I didn't say where Ninkov was born. I said
he was Russian, which was probably not correct
in a nationality sense, unless he has dual
citizenship. Maybe he does. People often think
I am American because of the way I speak, but
I was born in the UK. Culturally? Meh.

Anyway, I did not say where he was born. That
is an error and you should stop making it.

Shakespeare's line goes:

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

So as you see, the rose is Romeo. People
assume that a flower must be feminine, but
in the play, the rose is definitely not
Juliet, if you are associating it with a
character.
