If you look at the charts over the last 5 years there looks like there is always a dip in share prices this time of year. Could be a sign that share prices could drop in a few weeks? Thoughts?

Andyj, all I can report on is what I say and that is whenever I walk past the numerous Greggs shops in Manchester where I work, there are always queues.

I have just finished visiting the UK and it is easy to see why the retailers are in such a state. Indeed they seem to have almost given up. I cannot see how the likes of Game can continue to be a going concern in the near future. McDonald's also looks to have suffered over expansion and frankly is in decline. But Greggs stood out. Everywhere I went the stores had queues and those at service stations, very long queues. The food is good, well priced and the service is very good for the price, considerably better than the sneering teenagers in McDonald's.This is a company on the up, one that will take business from its competitors and will justify the expansion. I am looking to open a position here although it may need to trickle towards 900 first.

If this was a horse - they'd shoot it.
trouble is, they would then use the meat in their pasties.

Greggs is still undervalued, if you want a position in Greggs, it's best to load up now rather than when it is over 1200p in a few months time.

Disagree with the burning through cash comment re healthier eating options.
That just is not the case. The newer options have proven very successful.

The big CAPEX spend is on manufacturing capacity and the supply side investment.

GRG have to navigate a rapidly evolving UK retail environment,
However there is flexibility in the model. Some bumps along the way, yes,
would agree with that.

The shorts will have to close their positions before the results so the share price should rise before then.

That isn't even the same animal! apples & oranges. McChicken
Then again I'm Comparing a pie to a burger.
Maybe the top selling steak bake is the Greggs equivalent of the Flagship Big Mac but most people don't purchase these individually. The POS is meal deals at McD's. which are better margin. Are there deals at Greggs?

I'd say total calories are the primary motivator for a purchase decision
but one also has to look at all nutritional factors because it indicates taste and consumer response. Not forgetting ingredients
e.g. a donut is the perfect blend of carbohydrate, sugar & fat.

It is very hard to get a like for like analysis but my thoughts are that the Steak Bake beats a Hamburger in terms of consumer satiation. But the Big Mac rules without an adequate competitor.

GRG needs one:
It needs to be +500 kcal & have some nutritional value.
my suggestion is the...

Steak Bake double XL cheeze & tomato.
'100% UK beef in the special Greggs gravy, cheese sauce, tomato & ketchup layered between that deliciously unique pastry...'
price: £1.89
Can be eaten hot or cold.

My purchases from Greggs are usually a bacon roll and coffee for 2 quid for breakfast and a salad for lunch.

Disagree with the unhealthy talk. Greggs is definitely one of the most convenient places I can go to for a quick, healthy bite to eat.Obviously I'm avoiding steak bakes and sausage rolls. But for a salad roll or chicken wrap, etc, it's fairly decent. And anyone that eats relatively healthy isn't comparing the calories in a steak bake with a hamburger from Mcdonalds. Nobody is talking about those numbers because its useless. They're both terrible. And why did you chose a steak bake for comparison?.

The difference btn a pasty and McDonald's hamburger is that after eating a pasty you feel full up whereas after a hamburger you don't, hence why those who are worse off eat such food in the first place.

Good post LiquidKid.

This is one of the main problems with Greggs. The product is unhealthy and the public are wising up to it. Greggs is trying to become something it isn't and is finding it hard to compete with other healthier food outlets. They are simply burning cash trying to compete.

High probability of profit warning at the end of this month.
1. It's too damn hot.
2. No one goes to Greggs to buy a f'ing salad.
3. The sugar tax has messed with peoples tastes.
4. & it means that health nutters eg Jamie f'ing Oliver with all the media attention is dissuading the general population from eating meal deals & sausage meat .

Here's some numbers that no one looks at anyway:

Mano a mano - Steak Bake vs Ronald McD's Hamburger
Price - £1.25 vs 99p
Energy - 405 kcal vs 250 kcal
Fat Gross (g) - 26 vs 8.3
Protein (g) - 14 vs 13
Carbohydrate (g)- 29 vs 30
of is Sugars (g)- 0.2 vs 6.6
Salt (g) - 1.4 vs 1.2
