Sorry Dragonsteeth for making the 2014 stocks to double in one year shout before you! I just had to post GTC as it has so much potential and it's full year results were some of the best I've ever seen in a company. I hope my recommendation interests some others who read the PBB and merry Christmas all and a prosperous 2014 :)

Interesting price action too , 25.5k sold in 8 mins from 1130 , .
GTC is bizarre when it comes to news releases e.g. not releasing the presentation they did at the Shares evening. Agree Stuart, the things to look at are the meaningful RNSs and the share price in the past 12 months.

Not really a dodgy RNS, it is not a profit warning and he may have planned to retire on the Friday before Christmas. Seems plausible. If you are a holder you just have to put up with ill timed director selling which trashes the share price. Get used to it. Re-read the final results RNS to remind yourself why you are invested in the first place. Just my two cents.

Regards

Stuart

Okay so does this raise any red flags? Why would they drop the RNS @ 1610 on a Friday during a rally on a day the share price has gone up? Suspicious much ? And why could we of not got notified that the founder of the company was retiring today a few months in advance? Seems fishy giving us the whole weekend to digest this news.I think this could damage the current share price and feel the news has been 'sneaked' out . Going to seriously consider cutting my position here All imo of course any thoughts welcome :)

I think so. They seem to release updates nice a regularly so I would expect another reasonably soon which could help push it up a bit. Next year looks attractive as well, with the widening of the net looking especially promising.

I would happy put this into the 'business with a moat' basket so happy to hold and hold (and hold...) If it wasn't for xmas I would be buying more.

Is the recent price weakness a reaction to the launch of a satellite to map the earth's magnetic fields?

Does anyone know whether this could impact Getech's business?

(It does seem to validate the value of magnetic data for mineral explorers, though)

Cheers

I think 100p may trigger sells when it hits it .
This from Mount Teide on the Tethys board, he attended the presentation last night :
dragonsteeth - Getech - most impressed with both the company and their MD. On what i heard on the night and from research carried out beforehand, the outlook for the company looks very encouraging.

Although the business like the share price has progressed extremely well over the last few years, there seems to still be considerable potential for further growth now they plan to specifically target mid and small cap companies(50 times larger market), to add to their mostly super major, national, and large cap client list, who they are retaining long term, since these companies want all the new relevant data Getech's research unearths to build in to and update their own models.

that link previously posted is good background. this is my basic understanding-
getech, through their uni background, own this huge library of data and because they collected the data and put it together have unmatched expertise in interpreting and using that data. the data is constantly being added to so the library just keeps getting bigger and they become more and more skilled in interpreting the data.
now the buyers are the exploration companies trying to find new oil/gas deposits. this is becoming increasingly difficult because all the easy stuff to get has been found. because it's more difficult it's far more expensive to find, develop and pump any new deposits.therefore the exploration companies don't want to be looking for a needle in a haystack, they want to explore areas where there's a decent chance of finding summat useful. therefore anything that can 'point them in the right direction' is very important and getech basically tells them whether it's worth having a go at a particular area or not.
if you like this idea of a company successfully exploiting a niche in oil/gas exploration have alook at thalassa as well

Thanks Harry (good name).

It ticks all the boxes for me, except understanding what they sell and their market. Which for me is a really important criteria, in particular I try and avoid companies with lumpy sales profiles especially if the share price is doing well.

I'm like you - I've got no oil/gas or technology expertise, but it seems this has got a niche and something of a moat with all the data they own.

Thanks Fredahead

do they have competitors in this field? They say they are the market leader are they well clear of the field.

Apologies for all the questions - I appreciate the answers I'm getting, but see the share price is going up as I'm doing my research. Doh.

Hi trident. The Globe 3 year program is actually rolling, the intention was that it be a long term program, but the Company felt it would be asking too much to ask clients to commit at the start for longer than an initial fixed term.
from the company:
"The Globe concept is that it is a constantly evolving and updated framework that the clients can use to improve their exploration programmes. As such it is an ongoing programme and, as you have rightly noted, the initial period of client commitments was to cover three years. This was because we didn't believe we could obtain more than a three year commitment up-front but the intention has always been for this to be a long term product."
They have also announced in the recent release, that the program is being added to in the form of climatic, tidal and palaeogeographies, which provide an enhanced, predictive model for the origin and development of oil fields.

My own view is that the reasons for existing clients to renew the program are compelling. The data provided needs interpretation, and ongoing Getech support expertise is one component of clients usefully using the data. Also, the costs to clients are absolutely miniscule, in relation to their capex on unproductive drilling. I expect that existing clients will be sticky, and that indeed, they will expand their client base.

I'm also pleased to see the "CRYOSAT" project is now gathering momentum, with the initial pilot being converted to a new 3-year full scale project. With the doubling of the dividend announced, I dont believe the Co. would have done that if they felt that future revenue streams were at risk. There is little worse than for a company to hike the dividend, only to back-track the following year, so, all in all I am very comfortable with this company, which I feel is suddenly firing on all cylinders.

that's useful but I still can't get my head round what exactly they're selling especially the Globe product/service. As it's data - why would you renew it after three years?

This seems a well informed and sensible board, and the company looks very interesting.

But I'm struggling to understand the nature of its sales, in the sense of whether they can be of a recurring nature.

Is anyone able and kind enough to help me understand this?

Thanks in advance.
