13/3/2003 07:45 | Bradwell - The firemans strike is more than inconvenience. To cover for it some troops will be pulled off essential duties two days prior to the strike and wont be released until the day after. Some of those covering would normally be organising spares for Iraq, on standby for Iraq or conducting other backup duties necessary during a conflict. The firemans action will be classed as treacherous by some and will do neither the country nor themselves any favours. Maybe Prescott should consider firing the firemen. | thurstonland
13/3/2003 02:37 | NO Answer Snowy???? | bradwell
13/3/2003 02:04 | Snowy Bagdad will be a breeze, the problem is that people don't realise that when 24 ton bombs start dropping, the enemy give in!!!! The firemans strike is an inconvenience to the gov't not a problem!!! What will happen in Iraq will happen no matter what!!! The firemen still have a claim no matter what!!! | bradwell
13/3/2003 01:58 | Not an inconvenience brad , putting our servicemens lives at risk , nearer mark . People wont forget that if the action in Iraq gets bogged down , which it could in street fighting . | snowmann
13/3/2003 01:56 | whOO Snowy Who's fault is it that the Firemen are on strike, no matter what the political solution is!! and if it is an inconvieniance then who should sort it out>??? | bradwell
13/3/2003 01:45 | Striking if our soldiers are in action will be a bloody disgrace , regardless of your thoughts on Iraq . They will rightly lose all public sympathy in those circumstances . | snowmann
13/3/2003 01:04 | ...If I wasnt so tired and going to bed I`d be giving these bunch of mercenary donowts a piece of my mind - the country`s on the verge of war and these pillocks are wittering on about more money it`s ludicrous ...our armed forces are ready to face flak and bullets and the horrors of war and this lot are wittering about more brass for doing buggar all bar climbing up the odd ladder and rescuing some old dears tom cat - I`m speechless.Gillchris | jaxaxe
02/2/2003 21:20 | No they would have taken the fire engines that the fire persons are holding as ransom. It is not rocket science I know. | terry91
02/2/2003 20:41 | The 40% asked for was clearly way over the top, but I wonder what would happen if a large fire broke out in the Palace of Westminster and the army in their 50 year old 3 tonners were out of their depth. Would there be a plea by Prescott for the fire service to turn out. I am not a fireman. | dondee
02/2/2003 19:01 | Well said brought on them selves. GREED | terry91
02/2/2003 18:49 | You have lost Sparky...... The Forces are coping well, even the public are beginning to wonder if the Fire Brigade is required in its present form. The very thing so many warned you about is happening, you have lost public support, the news and papers tell us you are out but don't bother with the interviews anymore, the Govt even threaten draconian measures and no one bats an eyelid..... Part time and privatisation beckon...... And you didn't have to do it...... | mick p
01/2/2003 13:34 | You will just have to work more hours in your second job. Oh sorry that is what you are loosing the shift where you sleep all night then go to your nice little earner. Come on no point in saying it all again. The goverment can now do what it wants with the service. As for the Ambulance service I think that you will find they get paid a lot less than you. They work hard and find it hard to recruit waht was it for the fire service 10 people wanting each job. | terry91
01/2/2003 13:25 | No you have all lost. "seem to be doing a better job" suppose we all better believe the government then they are so honest with your best interest at heart. Well if you call wasting about 3 billion a year to save 300m then so be it.Well no it isn't is it really it is more like save 300m a year and push the results onto the economy.3 billion in extra insurance costs. LOL!!! you have been warned. | sparky999
01/2/2003 13:00 | LOL, Has there been a fire strike? They seem to be doing a better job. Face it you lost! Group 4 fire service.lol as for "playing russian roulette with your lives " you are playing it now | terry91
21/1/2003 12:58 | Terry It's simple what are they worth???? and why are we not paying it???? as you say tell it to people who die!!! how much a life and how much to potentialy save it???? surley at least as described today on 5 live the average wage is 18 quid an hour before take home, they are asking for 8 quid an hour after it!! it doesn't take a genius to work out that that is still less than average!!! | bradwell
21/1/2003 12:37 | lol!!!!!????????? I think not tell that to the dead peoples family and the under trained, ill equipt, hero forces persons, who do the job for half the pay with way more danger to them than any fire fighter can come up with. I for one am not laughing | terry91
21/1/2003 12:20 | So a strike tomorrow, lets hear it for our firefighters and not for the office workers, who couldn't strike a match!!!!!!! Coz the boss wouldn't like it!!! lol lol lol | bradwell
21/1/2003 11:10 | Cheshire FB now fit smoke detectors in domestic properties, free of charge. To carry out this task, a fully operational fire-appliance ,with a crew of 5 is despatched. A rider-station officer and a Leading Firefighter go into the house and glue the detector onto the ceiling. The driver and remainder of the crew stay on the machine lolling and smoking. After a brew and talk on fire safety the entire operation can last 2 hours. It must work out at a thousand pounds per smoke alarm fitted ,but illustrates perfectly how the 'modern' Fire Service 'works'. Whats wrong with sending a man in a van? Anyway, then its off back to the station for a brew...... | techno1
21/1/2003 10:35 | Bradwell, I use to be a fireman it is manual work little training when you look at Police and medical and very boring. 98% boring 2% panic. You are heading for a group 4 style fire service as you are going tp loose. I am not having a go but with each strike the service is getting better and the goverment are getting harder. No way on this earth that they are ging to give way. The shift system is crazy why do they let you sleep any way is there not other things you could do with that time. Train at night all night then do fire inspections and smoke alarm fitting during the day. Police officers are not allowed second jobs so why are you? A 11,000 PA solider is doing your job with even less training and no equipment SLEEP sound | terry91
21/1/2003 09:13 | Someone said that the fire brigade are on or going on strike. Its not even headline news anymore. They have lost again | rrrutbuster
21/1/2003 08:51 | Bradwell, I'm sorry but these pay figures that are thrown around by Andy Gilchrist and other supporters of the firefighters are misleading at best and lies at worst. You are now falling into the same stuck record argument, and it might work for the average Mirror reader, but most of us can see through it. Did you really believe what you were saying when you tried to convince us that a firefighter earns £8 per hour compared to the average of £18? Do you realise how ridiculous this makes your argument sound? £18 per hour equates to about £42k per annum, do you really think this is the average salary in the UK? Well it certainly is not. Infact its about £22k, which strangely enough is about what a firefighter earns. (Pension benefits will take them significantly above average.) Should he/she be paid more than average? Well that is debateable I will agree, but please please stick to the relevant debate and stop trying to convince everybody that the firefighters are living in poverty. | dobcroft |
