So you earn over 96k as a fireman Bradwell - I take it thats your 2nd job.
Why do you need to go on strike then?

So they call the next strike off under the pretence that they are looking for a solution through ACAS.This is just a way of saving face and winning back public support and show they are not greedy millitants.
The real reason they are going back is that they don,t want a bleak christmas with no money. It,s alright GILCHRIST CALLING A STRIKE HE STILL GETS PAID.

Another reason is they know they won,t get more than 4% without modinisation and modinisation is what they don,t want.
This would mean a change in work patterns ,that is more days than nights so less time they have on there lucrative second jobs.

Be gratfull for what you got, If you go remember there are another 40 waiting to jump in your beds/boots.

Bradwell,
.....he who laughs last laughs loudest...Guffaw - Guffaw-Guffaw...we shall fight them on the engines,we shall fight them on the picket lines...we shall never surrender. What a load of old tripe;Im not surprised that you and boney head and sparky have gone into hiding.....I just hope that you do it for the,(wait for it...)`the long haul!
Hardly the Dunkirk spirit was it....Sparky,Boneyhead and Bradwell-Britains last hopes.

I agree Jax, Long Haul =8 DAYS. Laugh, I thoght my boots would never dry....

The strike has back fired on the firemen, all it has done is highlighted there holiday style work to the public.
They ask for 40% go on strike, show us all there working practices. Then call the strike off .Lost 8 days pay, All for nothing .Still being offerd 4% which they should have accepted in the first place, and kept there cushy lifestyle quiet and still be looked upon as hero,s...

Bradwell,
as always you are a master of wit and repartee - and I must compliment you on the sheer dexterity of your words, its apparant that your brain was handed in to your local constabulary after all...Im pleased for you .
It must be a terrible blow for you-reading constant news of defeat and capitulation in the fbu camp. Its leader,Andy Gilchrist has called off any future strikes in order to save face and save further humiliation. All the dreams of (guffaw-guffaw)40% have melted like frost on a warm fire engine...first it was 40% then16% then 11% and now just 4%....where will it end. A.c.a.s are only going to say the same things as Big John Prescott(Johns brother in law is their spokesman)...I have to chuckle as I re-read some of Sparkys first posts...perhaps I can refresh your memory of one or two,-(this ones a corker..`we will bring this country to a standstill`(I told you it was a corker).I have just had a gaze out of my front window and the world does seem to be moving by just as swiftly as ever.....and then Sparky posted another gem(wait for it)...(forgive my hesitance in typing...my sides are killing me and the heaving of my shoulders makes typing a little difficult..here goes,`we are a band of brothers that will never give in-we will get our 40% and we will win...were in it for the long haul`.Its hardly been a long haul by any stretch of the imagination...but I suppose the strike was all to do with `imagination` wasnt it....the fbu would have been better watching Harry Potter instead of playing at being strikers.
Just like the fantastic adventures of Harry Potter - the pay rise of 40% was just another fairy tale told to the firemen and like all fairy tales they all end happily ever after....especially for the government ...who never ever backed down!
Happy landings,j.levi.

The government does'nt have to pay you a penny, you're going to ACAS with your employers on the other side of the table, not the govt, or have'nt you caught on yet, they've been telling you for the last two weeks you aint gonna get a penny more out of them, or the taxpayer.

give them 40% backdated say 10 years because they've obviously been underpaid for some time.

I mean,
If the fireshirkers go on strike and people die because of it who else is to blame. Oh, the government because they didn't give in to a ludicrous pay demand. I think not. The same pride which told them they were worth a 40% pay rise is getting in the way of them backing down even though it's clear they've already lost big time. They would be well advised to cut their losses and get back to work and help us all enjoy the festive season.

Blair has won already.A few more deaths and puiblic opinion will shift and the poor firefighters will be scape goated like the miners were under Thatcher. You have been warned.

It seem clear that we have more firemen than we need even for the worst scinario. Assuming this to be true some firemen have been turning up and getting paid when there is no work for them.
Assuming this to be true who should get the savings?
Assuming this is true should the surpluss staff be laid off with appropriate redundancy payments?

Comming up to the end of the 8 days and the country hasn,t come to a grinding halt as you thought it would.

Support is collapsing ,the general public now see the true amount of work you really do.
Get back to work you should have acceppted the 11% it,s the best your,e going to get.

It,s what you,re worth....

Re post 944.

It just goes to show how extravagant people are when they are not spending their own money.

Better to privatise the Fire Brigade and reduce the burden on the taxpayer.

Are these calculations from the same people that claim that firemen only earn £6.50 per hour?

If my company was to only include costs, and ignore income, in the accounts then we would be making a loss!!

President Tone insists that Firefighters pay demands cannot be met, he says every penny of pay rise above 4% must be financed through savings from "modernisation".

Yet, far from saving money it will cost extra. The first costings of the Bain enquiry, leaked to the press, show that proposed changes in working practices would cost an extra £41 million (Daily Mirror, Tuesday November 26, page 4).

It would cost £18 million for overtime. It would cost £4 million for new shift patterns for part-time working. It would cost millions for paramedic training and equipment, and new joint control rooms.

The FBU have costed it and by making an investment of £1 billion in equipment and wages the same amount would be saved in reduced fire damage.

He says that the country cannot afford to pay Firefighters, yet the 3 planned 8 day strikes will cost the country £57 million in Squaddies bonuses alone, according to estimates passed onto the FBU. Army personnel are reportedly receiving £1,000 each, which accounts for ten days work since they prepare 24 hours beforehand and wind down 24 hours after the Firefighters return to work.

No wonder there's a black hole in the U.K. economy.

Dobcroft,
Agree with all that. There is more at stake now and the FBU must not win or the UK faces a grim future.
