snurkle1 guess non holders like me have until january 2010 or so to buy this. Was expecting a drift down in illiquid FKL. Divi increased regularly and helps support the patience. Weather may seriously upset/delay rig ops but see FKL multi bagger in several years. Hope I get a chance soon.

Copied from the III board. Makes for some very good reading.

Falkland Islands Holdings

Forget sheep. Squid hold the greater sway over the fortunes of the Falkland Islands.

That might be the impression from yesterday's first-half results at the AIM-listed Falkland Islands Holdings (FIH), which has interests in everything from retail to shipping in the South Atlantic archipelago. A failed catch of ilex squid this year means that pre-tax profits in the six months to September 30 were £200,000 lower than originally forecast. FIH acts as agent for the fishing fleets that land squid for consumption in the Far East and a shift in ocean currents took them to other waters last spring.

The prospects for the islands' oil industry offer greater allure. First, FIH has an 8.2 per cent stake in Falkland Oil & Gas (FOG), one of four companies involved in the first offshore drilling campaign in the surrounding seas since 1998. Desire Petroleum has secured the first rig, due to arrive in February, but any exploration success will boost the value of FOG, too. Second, the influx of oil contractors over the next few years will benefit FIH's non-oil interests irrespective of any finds - whether through shopping spend, property rental or landing fees. At 392½p, or 22 times earnings, FIH provides an each-way bet on Falklands oil among those for whom the all-or-nothing play of pure exploration is too extreme.

With FIH's UK businesses, such as the Gosport ferry, generating annuity-like income, there are dividends, too. Buy.

Nice big buy (10K) this morning and reasonable volume today.
This looks like a really steady safe bet with regards the Falklands oil play.

My advice to you chrisoil is to have the oilies AND FKL, that way you have the best of both worlds. I don't think you can bank on the price still being at this level when you want to put your money in it. Also, FKL is very illiquid, so the share price could rise disproportionately compared to the more liquid oilies.

gm,

This stock is quite illiquid, so significant trades in any direction tend to have to be "worked".

Was it HL you used per chance? I've had to go off-line to trade this every time I've tried.

Out now; focused on the actual oil plays after the Momart deal.

Get a broker on the phone i never never deal on the internet with aim stocks i get a better price plus they trade my shares unlike the evil internet trades which freeze up.

By the way Greekman Desire and FOGL look interesting before Feb 2010 drilling, just a thought if you want to expand on FKL

Just tried a test trade to sell. Received following message.

'This stock cannot be executed automatically at this time
Please enter a limit price to place a limit order for this stock or try again later'.

I appreciate this type of message is not unknown, but it is rare.

Could mean a further noticeable increase/decrease in the share price

Views anyone.

Agree with whoppy post

Also the money will not be used for Desire PIs offer because they are not existing shareholders.

Nice rise ! i am invested in FI oil companies rather than FKL

Never know maybe after the FI companies find oil might be a place to park the money?

wish you luck...................

hangman- Forward planning. They need the money to invest in servicing the oil industry on the island and they need the money now. Drilling is only a couple of months away. Should be able to knock up the odd warehouse store and temporary accommodation blocks etc etc. The prospect of drilling Toroa has caught everyone by surprise..imo..they were working to a BHPB timeline for the end of 2010 when they will arrive with their rig. Everything has moved forward. Note they will sell some more around the time of the Toroa drilling with the exceptional circumstances being they will need even more money to expand facilities as everyone will be heading to the Falklands at the double.

wendy,

Yes, FKL is the "pick and shovel" play in the FI oil-rush. But they need to get a bit more adept at business management to attract me. The Momart acquisition was a bit of a howler.

Hello Greekman

you might have a point more housing development, harbour etc.

Well good luck to you at least if everything goes wrong you will have a nice income stream and not lost your capital.

Kiwi i am sure the recent article is FOGl goes on about 60 billion

7Kiwi - having been bombarded with RHPS stuff on this for the last several weeks, I don't read their enthusiasm for FKL as related very much at all to their holding in FOGL. Where FKL will score is - provided drilling is successful - by providing the necessary infrastructure and services to the oil industry and the thousands of personnel that will end up in the Islands as a direct result of success by FOGL.

Seems a bit odd that RHPS should tip FKL again on the day they reduce their exposure to FOGL though.

Hi Chrisoil,

That was my initial thought. But they have bagged a good profit and they still have 80% of their holdings left, some 8.2% of the enlarged issued share capital of Fogl.
They must think that they can do more with this money with less risk, IE a better spread of risk. Possibly due to FOGL not being the first to drill.
As the rigs move toward the Falkland fields, I am expecting some construction work to progress. Interesting times ahead. Of course if NO oil is found, well that's not worth contemplating. But if that does happen, at least FKL will be making 'some' money along the way

Time will tell if this was a good move. The market appears to think so, up 8.76% on a generally bad day.

Bad timing at least wait to sell when the rig is drilling Toroa for max benefit.

Unless the board knows something like negotiations have broken to do with OG and FOGL.

However my sources say not.

whats FKL percentage down to 8 % ? mmmm i would invest in one of the FI oil companies myself unless you really need a small div income !

Bye...............................................

FKL sold 20% of its hdoling in FOGL this morning, but has said it won't sell anymore until Toroa is drilled.

Looks like news is seeping through that the rig is on its way.
If I'm correct, its DES's rig which sailed from Whitby last Thursday.

Basically I believe this would be an investment in the shovel salesman during a gold rush. FKL own land, ports and infrastructure on the Falkland Islands, anyone who is exploiting oil there needs to buy their services. Lonrho plays a similar role in Guinea.
