The company has always made its intention to diversify outside of the Falklands clear. Investors whose only interest is in the Falklands should have been aware of this.

I would think the management team are fairly shrewd cookies. I would allow them to set out their proposals before deciding you are against them.

would think the consensus of holders on the board here would be to stick with the FI and not get involved with something in the UK , seems to be a very badly timed move ,unless it is something very beneficial to existing operations.

Any one got a list of major shareholders handy ?

Depending on what the potential purchase is , must be a move against the boards ability to govern imho etc

I hope they're not stupid enough to sell some FOGL shares now as well in order to finance a UK takeover. Just stick to the Falklands that's where things are finally starting to happen!

No acquisition now please, not now when falkland islands oil shares are finally starting to run north. Very badly timed. Don't want dillution at this moment. Am only interested in Falkland activities don't want to buy some useless UK based firm as things are finally starting to look bright for Falkland Islands based activities.

That thought did cross my mind, HJ2. Now that FKL have got the land on which to build (as part of race-course swap, planning permission presumably not yet given but likely), they will need some construction knowledge if they are to do it themselves.

I just hope it's a sensible acquisition at the right price.

How about buying a few struggling UK construction companies and house-builders?!

Are we talking a rights? A placing? They have chosen a good time to do either. Hope the purchased company is sensible - FKL management have been talking about doing this for a long time now.

Falkland Islands Holdings PLC

Statement re share price movement

28 February 2008

Falkland Islands Holdings PLC ("FIH") notes the increase in its share price
which may be attributable to the announcement by Desire Petroleum PLC of a
farm-in agreement and drilling of exploration wells in the North Falkland basin.

FIH announces that the potential acquisition of a UK based company, which would
be partly financed by the issue of new FIH shares, is at an advanced stage of
negotiation.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

Interesting, I wonder what they are buying? Travel agent specialising in trips from Norway or Houston to Stanley?

Look at what is happening elsewhere in the FI players: BOR, DES, FOGL and RKH. Then think about this company's holding in FOGL and the gearing of the main business towards lots of well paid oilies coming to the islands. And then specualte about what the land that FKL holds might be worth if they find anything.

HJ, yes a good mix here. Stake in FOGL, and there's the 'picks and shovels' aspect to the main business which ought to benefit from all the oilies coming to town ,not to mention the property interests if and when something is found. But very illiquid. Glad I am not alone, felt like Robinson Crusoe!

Falklands : CPA Delegation Enthusiastic About Falklands' Economy
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 19.02.2008 (Current Article)
A team of four UK Parliamentarians have concluded their visit to the Falkland Islands.

CPA DELEGATION ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT FALKLANDS' ECONOMY

By J. Brock (FINN)
A four man delegation of Members of Parliament has just completed a familiarisation visit to the Falklands. Mr Geoff Ennis, MP (LAB). Mr Paul Holms, MP (LibDEM), Lord Nigel Jones (LibDEM) and Lord Ian McColl held a press conference at the Malvina House Hotel on Monday afternoon to go over some of the highlights of the trip and give a brief outline about what they got from it and what they will take back for debate in Parliament.
Mr Ennis began by saying that he had a thoroughly fruitful visit and enjoyed the hospitality. It was his first visit and he felt very well looked after. He felt that the Councillors were doing a very good job and that the delegation came with an open agenda for items they wanted to report on back in the UK.
When asked about the three challenges that face the Falklands, Cllr Summers told the MPs they were "Argentina, Argentina, Argentina."
The delegation were impressed with the Falklands' main industries of Fisheries, Tourism and Agriculture. They also commented that they were pleased with the facilities at MPA and their use for training and for the defence of the Falkland Islands. A full programme was enjoyed by the delegation while they were at MPA.
All visiting Parliamentarians expressed their support about plans in place when the hydrocarbons industry begins exploratory drilling in the waters around the Falklands.
Lord Jones expressed the view that unless hydrocarbons are found the Falklands won't get tarmaced roads. Mr Holms went on to say that it might be a blessing in disguise for the lucrative eco-tourism trade.
Mr Ennis expressed his support for Councillors plans to have the world's first wholly organic island state.
The delegation expressed a willingness to help break down fossilised views about the Falklands stemming from the 1982 conflict. To help with this Lord Jones will propose an open meeting in parliament with 20 Members from both houses in attendance. He is hoping for feedback from Councillors. He also mentioned the impact that an airport in St Helena would have on the lives of the Saints here as well as tourism.
The delegation expressed the wish to have a next of kin visit to the Falklands but would not be drawn on whether the Falklands should allow an Argentine charter flight to bring them over. Lord Jones said that the Argentine ban on charter flights should end and that would be beneficial both to the Falklands and to Argentina with Tourism and Fisheries being better off. He went on to say that he noticed a positive entrepeneurial spirit. All delegates hoped that whatever economic benefits the Falklands had in store, not to sell ourselves short.
Finally Mr Ennis said that he hoped for the chance of a polite exchange of views with the Argentine President when she visits the UK.

Mathon firm targets rich oil reserves

POTENTIALLY vast oil reserves under the Falkland Islands are being targeted by a Mathon company hoping to make hundred of millions of pounds.

Desire Petroleum, headed by geologist Dr Colin Phipps, will compete with five other companies to drill deep into the sea bed of the British overseas territory.

Dr Phipps said: "There are potentially several billion barrels down there. It could be getting on for the UK part of the North Sea if it was accessible. Until you drill you do not know."
