You would be wrong to assume that bird flu will effect the old and infirm, infact the young and healthy are more likley to become infected.
Looks like I chose the wrong year to give up smoking.

It's clear to me now that the duty of any true investor is to fall on his sword for the greater good!

Like the announcement the other day, plenty of black humour in there, including:
"We continue to grow the core areas of our business organically"

"and a 1.7% increase in the estimated number
of deaths in Great Britain, which was slightly ahead of expectations"

"...an epidemic would generally kill the old and infirm - all you are doing is bringing forward the deaths by a few years. You would get a few more this year but would lose some over the next few - net effect, not much..."

True. But in terms of cashflow and growth, pulling the gains forward generates early surpluses that can be invested sooner. Momentum pushes the company up the rankings where it might benefit from greater institutional (or even predatory) interest ;o)

As it happens, I am not sure that sudden epidemics such as bird flu really help that much.

Such an epidemic would generally kill the old and infirm - all you are doing is bringing forward the deaths by a few years. You would get a few more this year but would lose some over the next few - net effect, not much.

What really matters is the underlying death rate and population change. Given that the population is relatively stable, the death rate is affected by population age distribution and life expectancy rates. These change only very slowly over time.

As it happens, the next 20 years or so should be pretty good as the baby boomer generation moves into the departure lounge. My family are in old folks homes and we are already staring to see the effect.

This is of course bad news for us tax payers, but should be good for DTY!

Yep - agree good thread - isn't it easy to see after the event - but positive results, combined with technical ascending triangle and I did not add for the break out. we might see 420 fairly quickly here before consolidation for a spell.

Oh well - as a long term holder I look forward to another 30% this year..... and with low risk what more can you ask?
