Old management looked at valuation metrics and published them in results over the years, worth a read if you can dig them up.

As I've written before, the market doesn't see these companies as sustainable in the long run and hence its management talking about acquisitions and expansion.

Plus, according to Investors' Chronicle in September, CSN's NAV is 241p including 76p of intangibles. If you ignore the intangibles that gives a price to book value of 1.58 times (260p / 165p) which to me looks like a full valuation for a company like this.

Very disappointing shareprice bearing in mind Phoenix, M&G and Legal have all rallied 15-20%. Any ideas? Clearly a seller but wonder who and why. Is a 9% yield no enough?

pvb,

For the vast majority you're right of course. That's what made Chesnara special, I don't think I ever worried about a bad deal.

What I said after the new CEO took over:

"Changed CEO to someone who is obviously more ambitious.
Hired a Head Of Strategy from Pheonix
Talked of making purchases based on "synergies"

Don't they always? ;-)

As CSN is deemed to be a very safe and virtually risk free high dividend stock, where do we go if the new team exceed our risk profile..?

I hold LGEN too, but wouldn't include them (or their peers) in the same ultra safe category.

You obviously live in a completely different world to most other people (you're not Fred the Shred btw are you lol) It's very doubtful the CEO has got £1m in spare cash but if he had then maybe he would spend it on CSN shares - we don't know if he would do or not.

The point is he did spend £10k of his own money on more shares. He certainly didn't have to do that and could have spent it on a nice caribbean holiday instead.

exactly he's got loads so he spends a weeks wages on a few more, wow a major signal, no, if he spent £1,000,000 then i may consider it significantly enthusiastic

Oh im for real alright fred, are you? Lol..

£10,000 is £10,000 no matter who has it. The CEO decided to spend it on some more shares. He doesn't have to as he already has a fair few, but he did nonetheless...

I suspect it was meant sarcastically, but I agree sometimes a director might be wise not to buy unless he they have a suitable amount that will indicate a genuine view

Rasied funds via a bond placing

Chersnara is no longer boring.

While David Rimmington is still on board and clearly being listened too around risk management and the way Chesnara conducts itself I'll monitor things, but stick around."

Got some serious thinking to do now.

I've been in and out of Phoenix, I sold up when they declared they were getting more aggressive with their acquisition strategy and bought back quite recently as they moderated their approach.

I think the comaprison bares some analysis:

Phoenix floated in 2010, in March 2010 it was at 710p and now trades at 489p.

Chesnara has been around longer, but in March 2010 it traded at 210p and now sits at 257p.

Both have paid very good dividends over the years, Phoenix has taken the risk of aggressive expansion, where as Chesnara has not. I'm not sure owners of Phoenix stock have been adaquately rewarded for the additional risk they took.

I see a similar story playing out here. More debt, more risk resulting in a bigger business, but little additional value for shareholders.

With a focus in the introduction put on M&A
Will the market like that ?
Or will it be perceived as the CEO taking risks ?

I can't say that the rest of my portfolio has paid for itself!
Across the portfolio it has been a rank bad year.
I never thought i would see DEC sub 100, let alone sub70, for example.
Lets hope that all the divis keep flowing!
Onwards and upwards!

Even nicer now that my holding has long since paid for itself (trading out and back in, plus dividends received).
