Dunderhead:- hTTps://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/cairn-energy-s-tax-headache-is-set-to-clear-at-last-qds2tktrm You may need to be a subscriber to view it, though. The article covers the Indian tax dispute, which we know all about, and concludes, "Simon Thomson, chief executive of Cairn, has already promised that if the arbitration decision goes Cairn’s way, then a portion of cash will be returned to shareholders. After last month’s annual meeting, he said that he hoped the size of that return would be “significant”." It also states that, "Analysts seem generally upbeat about Cairn’s prospects. In recent weeks JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and UBS have all upgraded their estimates. UBS has Cairn as among its top picks in the oil sector and a target price of 280p on the shares. Goldman has moved from a “neutral” to a “buy” rating and has a 288p target for the stock, while JP Morgan is even more bullish with 300p." And ends:- "Advice Buy Why Putting the tax case to one side, Cairn has a clear roadmap to increasing its production over the next five years. Any special windfall from winning the arbitration would be an additional boost."

Guys you really need to check out COPL currently to buy 0.55p. A potential to be a multi baggar. It tried its luck in Liberia but failed to find any Oil.It is now concentrating in Nigeria. There it has partnered with Shoreline a Nigerian company. Copl and Shoreline have ventured together and created a company called Shorecan which is owned 50/50 by both. They have bidded for a Licence and are awaiting Approval and Transfer of Asset. The asset is OPL 226.Five wells have been drilled on OPL 226 by previous operators.A well drilled in 2001 encountered Oil. When all approvals are sorted then it will drill an appraisal well on the discovery in 2001.Financing for the drilling is meant to be secured for rumours are true. What is holding the share price back presently is NNPC approval. $60m was spent on this asset by the previous operator.the potential for Copl is huge. I know most of you gonna say its another Nigerian scam.IMO i think it is not.Presently we have 2 Nigerian companies listed on the LSE they are Egland Oil and Gas (market cap £250m) and Seplat Petroleum (market cap £850m) Copl management wants it to be a mid tier oil and gas company ie £250m-£500m All to play for.Current market cap for Copl is just under £10m.I think its one of the best plays on the LSE.

eip - they'll probably win but will the Indians respect the 'treaty' lol?! They don't seem to be respecting many of their own high court tax judgements so I'm not too hopeful about this one. Dyor and all imho of course.

Ooops! I missed the AGM statement.... Still singing the same song on India "We remain confident in our position regarding the Indian tax dispute. International arbitration proceedings are well advanced with the final hearing of our claim under the UK-India Bilateral Investment Treaty scheduled for August in The Hague with an outcome expected in Q4 2018."

Haven't Cairn got some Norway stuff progressing nicely? I think the India thing will go on and on, has India re-paid any of its tax money yet? Didn't Shell and Vod win there but are still yet to see a bean? Just asking I don't know I hasten to add. CNE appear to have some very good explor blocks in Mexico though for spud sometime next year? Looks reasonable value to me and a hold at this price. All imho and dyor of course.

Thanks to Alex Newman at the IC - Cairn’s multiplier effect In the long run, Rockhopper’s funding requirements for Sea Lion may be aided by success in its arbitration with Italy, which the oil group believes breached an Energy Charter Treaty when it blocked the development of the Ombrina Mare field. Peculiarly, Cairn Energy (CNE) finds itself in a similar situation. This year, the FTSE 250 constituent should finally receive a judgement on a long-running, high-value tax dispute with India. Cairn believes it has been unfairly affected by India’s decision to block the disposal of a residual 10 per cent stake in Cairn India in 2011, and has a “high level of confidence” in its claim for $1.1bn compensation plus costs. A windfall of this magnitude, equivalent to 115p a share on Numis’s estimation, would have the added bonus of strengthening Cairn’s hand ahead of its FID on its Sangomar Deep (or ‘SNE’) discovery offshore Senegal. Indeed, $800m would cover Cairn’s costs to first oil, expected in 2021 at the earliest. Then again, you would imagine that recent developments in the oil market have only served to strengthen the investment case, regardless of the outcome of the Indian arbitration. With cash starting to flow from Cairn’s working interest in the Catcher and Kraken fields in the North Sea, it may be in a better position to fund SNE-1 than many are assuming. Naturally, Cairn could help itself by farming out or selling a portion of its 40 per cent stake in the project – a possibility Canaccord Genuity believes is likely to face hurdles. Yet with a 10 per cent break-even at $35 oil, SNE-1’s economics are hardly a turn-off. If Brent flatlines at $60, Cairn forecasts an internal rate of return (IRR) of 32 per cent. A 25 per cent IRR at $50 a barrel isn’t to be sniffed at, either. With appraisal activity complete, Cairn and its SNE partners now just need to file an evaluation report, with government approval expected by the end of 2018. Verdict: Positive -----
