Here is an accessible and illuminating analysis of BPs pension scheme, and the change in UK taxation which would lead to the accounting windfall reported by the FT ...

Apparently BPs scheme is in surplus by about £6B. A review by trustees last year concluded that the cost of insurance in order to wind up the scheme would absorb much of that surplus. Whereas the UKs intention to reduce future tax due on the surplus, in an attempt to somehow boost inward investment, shifts the strategy in favour of letting schemes run on rather than wind them up.

This all reads like accounting treatments on paper rather than real profit or cash flow, so I don't get if it means much in reality to BP shareholders or UK plc.

Pigeons - if you're married and own a home you'll have to be leaving in excess of £1m, excluding pensions, to be liable to inheritance tax. Doesn't mean I agree with it!

zac..
.. Why is Tax necessary ... when 'money'.. is just 'Invented'..

Not a spurious question..
Simply a statement of Fact ..
The treasury & Boe .. 'Create 'money'..
--- But if they are the Only source of 'money' .. (Pounds)

.. then where do the additional 'pounds'.. come from .. in order to pay the Tax ... The 'Inflation'.. and the 'Interest'.. on the Government Loans (National Debt')

.. Surly it's Just a Ponsi / Pyramid scheme .. that is (and always has been)

Impossible to ever solve..
(Ie .. The Treasury .. will ALWAYS .. Be in a negative position
.. and only has the ability to pass on the repayment obligations
.. to the people (Via 'Tax')
.. (who in turn .. end up in the same 'negative position'..)

.. That's called money laundering & Fraud .. no matter how 'Fair'
.. you think it is..

It's just a Myth.. Isn't it.. ?

" . . . You cannot expect a working man or woman to pay 40% tax on circa £50k . . . "

We don't. If I earn £30k pa my annual tax bill is around 11.6%. £50k pa and it's about 14.9%, whilst £100k pa has a tax take of 27.4%.

The more earned, the more % tax paid. In principle that seems fair to me.

I agree there has to be a tax efficient system in place for most people on these boards but there needs to be an increase in "tax" paid by the elite. You cannot expect a working man or woman to pay 40% tax on circa £50k but allow multi millionaires to keep growing at the rate they have done in recent years.

The middle class, which I guess most on these boards would describe themselves as, is being eroded at a rapid rate while those in the lower / working class bracket struggle more and more. This is happening while the elite gather pace and buy up the property for example that was once achievable for so many "normal" people.

We have to have a society where it's possible through hard work to climb up to being a homeowner, raise kids etc and maybe have a holiday too. That is becoming more and more difficult and if it gets to a stage where working in what previously would have been a decent job only enables you to pay rent, eat and heat then we are in big trouble as a country.

To be fair the 2m was not all income. There is a difference between capital gains tax, dividend tax and income tax. We all know that so struggling why it is ab issue500k of tax is considerable and was in line with current tax rules. Last thing anyone in these boards should want is a 40% tax on capital gains or dividends

Yeah and paid 23% tax on the £2.2m but expects more an more people each year to pay 40% on just over £50k!!

No wonder with leaders like him and his mob we are rapidly going down the pan 😩

The oil company Shell considered moving its headquarters and listing from London to the US before opting to ditch a second share listing in the Netherlands in favour of remaining in the UK, the Financial Times reported this in March 23. For Shell I believe that this is on the back burner but might be dusted down if push comes to shove. I have read nothing from BP about relocating. I would only expect this if BP split and say kept the renewables (BP Consumer Green) in the UK and (BP Oil & Gas) in the US. Some way off though. Looking at ARM it seems that they made the right call to list in the US.

I see labour are promising to increase windfall taxes. They sure know how to attract businesses. I wonder how the socialists will redefine a 'windfall'?. Looks like our divis will have to be ploughed into buybacks for the forseeable. ARM must be ruing leaving London!! Sooner BP follow the better - there cant be a future for it in the woke dominated UK - O+G, the North Sea and profits are a pariah. Starmer's the sheeps coat, Miliband and co are the wolves - 470p could be the good old days by next year.

Mulling things over and inviting folks to say what they see ahead. BRENT might dwell in the $70-90 range and that would be enough to keep BP on its current positive trajectory. If you are happy with that all good. And if it makes you any happier some of the proceeds of my divestment went on UKW in the mid 140's which in hindsight was perhaps a bit too hot.
