Until there is a dramatic rise in demand for oil, or the Saudi's announce a significant cut in production, both of which are nowhere in sight, the p.o.o. will continue to respond with a remorseless downward spiral. If the high ranking member in the UAE who reportedly has an insight into the Saudi's strategic thinking, is calling bottom at $40 a barrel, then splitting the difference, we could still be looking at circa $48 a barrel in the Spring or sooner if the weather stays mild in the industrial northern hemisphere.

To be honest is one of the best capitalised, lowest debt holders in the sector Alpha, their enormous cash flow has always financed the debt and their diversification, upstream and down stream, how else apart from disposals would they have paid thus far for DWH. and re-introduced dividend, they are not financing these with debt, by 2020 this co. alone will be producing nigh on 900,000 barrels of oil a day!

"Why would I invest in the sector if I don't understand the current thinking and pain tolerance of Saudi Arabia."

You will need to go back to 632AD to get the answer to that question.

cfc1,

I have had a short position in the stock for a while. That makes me a "shorter" I suppose.

I am not convinced that BP is "cheap", possibly fairly valued at best thanks to the debt-financed dividend and verging on expensive on a specific risk-adjusted relative basis (vs Total, Shell, ENI).

As a whole, the sector is being rerated down not just because of oil prices per se - but also because the visibility into the pricing of oil has gone. Why would I invest in the sector if I don't understand the current thinking and pain tolerance of Saoudi Arabia or Qatar?

There may be value in some crashed-down oil juniors in an asset-based approach, but not so in large caps IMHO. I picked BP as the strategically and potentially financially-challenged proxy in that sector.

FTSE futures down -38 since close.

I've removed my 367 buy order to add.

Relentless selling has put me off, best wait to see a trend change on the FTSE100 as it's broken through support.
