I agree there's a fair bit of bad news already in the price.

I also agree that Exxon in particular is in a good position to make the best of the US legal/political uncertainty around the GoM cases and to some extent now might be the best time to strike since the oil price is low and the gross negligence finding is in. However, it would still be a difficult takeover to pull off given the regulatory issues and so an actual takeover offer is a relatively low probability event IMO.

On the other hand the oil price has a tendency to move to more extreme positions than people (including industry analysts) expect and to stay there for much longer than people expect.

So I'm sticking to my "review position in the light of 3Q results and guidance" opinion for now. But if they do bring out bad news with 3Q results and the share price takes a further hit I think that might be the time I buy some.

Market factoring in a lot of bad news here, particularly about GOM., this is flagship co. with enormous assets worldwide, I cannot see OPEC letting oil price remain at theses levels, they backstopped the price when it was very high by allowing more on stream(Saudis. As Prince Al Walleed written to the oil ministry urging higher prices to balance budget there it's likely they will listen at some point. There may be plenty of oil supply, but it is not economically viable to produce at these levels, particularly tar sands of Canada, this price is discounting any likelihood of an oil shock somewhere in Mid-East or wherever, BP. very vulnerable to a takeover at this level by Exxon, they have the clout globally to engineer such an outcome relatively straightforward, with that the litigation in the US likely dissipate very smoothly I rather think with their enormous political lobby mechanism!

Even at this share price I think I'll wait for the 3Q results before thinking about buying. See what they do about guidance on ops cash target and whether they take a big hit on the GoM decision.

Speak English Alpha, SBB?????, sanctions will be lifted soon, all they are doing is hurting the European economy far more than Russia!

Helicopter view:

Brent at June's 2012 level now.
No value-creating SBB in the meantine, higher probability bias towards harscher GoM penalties and existing sanctions towards UdSRR (although risk associated with TK JV wasn't any better)

At 4050cts, BP ADR's share price about 10% more expensive now than what it was in June 2012.

Looking at similarities between now and the big drop of 2012. There was a good 40/50p bounce at the end of that.

This level way too low, all technical indicators would suggest a bounce soon, pretty much everything this co. has had to absorb recently been undertaken, Ukraine/Russia sanctions situation, US litigation, falling oil price to name a few, buying back colossal amounts of stock so at some point up we go. MACD still declining on daily, but RSI in the red zone suggesting the low is almost in!

We are practically at 4 year lows now.

IMHO good for a medium/long term view and good for the
current share buy back program.

General weak market, weak oil prices and upcoming third quarter
results would seem to be the key factors here.

Its getting very tempting now to pick up some more now for my SIPP
at these levels but the current weakness suggest we may see
a bit lower yet. There are starting to look quite a few
bargains around now in the FTSE100 with good dividends
I see Centria has dropped comfortably below £3 as well for the
first time in a long time.

I also Rosneft share price well down as well.

Medium / Long term view has to be the one taken here I think.

BP shouldn't have stopped research on algae fuel. It could've be a hedge on fossil fuel & they would've cornered the market as other big players left.
