The coronavirus has mutated and the second strain is more aggressive than the original.

But just how much worse is it, and are we at more risk?
-------------------------

The coronavirus did not escape from a lab. Here's how we know.
By Jeanna Bryner - Live Science Editor-in-Chief

The persistent myth can be put to bed.

As the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 spreads across the globe, with cases surpassing 284,000 worldwide today (March 20), misinformation is spreading almost as fast.

One persistent myth is that this virus, called SARS-CoV-2, was made by scientists and escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began.

A new analysis of SARS-CoV-2 may finally put that latter idea to bed. A group of researchers compared the genome of this novel coronavirus with the seven other coronaviruses known to infect humans: SARS, MERS and SARS-CoV-2, which can cause severe disease; along with HKU1, NL63, OC43 and 229E, which typically cause just mild symptoms, the researchers wrote March 17 in the journal Nature Medicine.

"Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus," they write in the journal article.

The coronavirus isn’t alive. That’s why it’s so hard to kill.

The science behind what makes this coronavirus so sneaky, deadly and difficult to defeat.
Viruses have spent billions of years perfecting the art of surviving without living — a frighteningly effective strategy that makes them a potent threat in today’s world.

That’s especially true of the deadly new coronavirus that has brought global society to a screeching halt. It’s little more than a packet of genetic material surrounded by a spiky protein shell one-thousandth the width of an eyelash, and leads such a zombielike existence that it’s barely considered a living organism.

But as soon as it gets into a human airway, the virus hijacks our cells to create millions more versions of itself.

There is a certain evil genius to how this coronavirus pathogen works: It finds easy purchase in humans without them knowing. Before its first host even develops symptoms, it is already spreading its replicas everywhere, moving onto its next victim. It is powerfully deadly in some but mild enough in others to escape containment. And, for now, we have no way of stopping it.

Beijing's leading doctor warns of a NEW coronavirus outbreak in China
after the country reported its first case of someone 'catching the illness from a person returning from abroad'

China's coronavirus expert said she was 'very worried' about a second outbreak
She warned surging number of imported cases could trigger another epidemic
Guangzhou yesterday reported a domestic case in relation to an imported case
The man fell ill after having close contact with a woman returning from Turkey
Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

One of China's top coronavirus experts has warned that the nation is facing a second outbreak due to the increasing number of infections detected among new arrivals from abroad.

Professor Li Lanjuan, a member of Beijing's expert team on the virus, said she was 'very worried that imported cases could trigger another large-scale epidemic in our country'.

Her comment came after health officials reported the country's first case of someone who is believed to have contracted the disease, known as COVID-19, from another person returning from abroad.

It also came as life in former epicentre Wuhan is slowly returning to normal following a two-month draconian lockdown.

Her comment comes after the city of Guangzhou reported the country's first native coronavirus case 'related to an imported case' yesterday. The above picture shows medical staff treating COVID-19 coronavirus patients at a hospital in Wuhan on March 19

Prof Li, 73, told China News today that the control and prevention of imported cases was an 'arduous' task for medical workers.

She said: 'This requires us to continue to intensify our efforts and work tirelessly to prevent the coronavirus pneumonia epidemic from spreading in other cities.'

Prof Li has led her medical team to fight the virus in Wuhan for more than 50 days.

She told reporters in Wuhan: 'Cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou have frequent international communications. [I am] very worried that imported cases could trigger another large-scale epidemic in our country.'

She also demanded officials identify those who were struck down by the virus but have not been officially diagnosed. She warned that they could re-ignite the epidemic.

Doctors in Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong, have diagnosed a coronavirus patient who fell ill after having close contact with a person entering China from Turkey.

This is the first coronavirus case in the country with a direct link to an imported case. The Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission called it 'a case related to an imported case' in a statement yesterday.

I also have to admit watching the last interview with Zvi he seldom looks that enthusiastic and I would concur that I have never know him to mislead investors. If he says the test kits are validated and in production I would take that as fact.
There are numerous overlapping patents in the industry but Adalatis and NatLab are not controlled by Roche or Thermo Fisher. BATM are looking for large co operative partners in the same interest field.
Who knows what the share price will do in the near future the value is in the IP which is starting to get commercialized into tangible product.
Celitron is also starting to look like a very serious employable solution particularly given the concerns over pathogens from animal food production, by product and waste disposal. They have also introduced an airport sterilizer unit which I linked above.
The agricultural unit though is a no brainer for producers.

Let us not worry about what people bought and sold at. Focus on the business. In the interview Zvi Maron was clearly very excited and very busy...which I hope augers well. I have met him several times in the last few years and found him credible...we will see as events unfold across all 3 divisions but at the AGM last year he was asked where he saw greatest growth across the business and he said in this area....we will see.

ok space bob, let’s compare the batm share price on 1st May to the price you sold out at. Around 45p, correct? (I think it’s fair to say the interest on your cash will be negligible.)

>SB I cant really disagree with that approach if you squeaked out in time... I just took objection to the misleading posts. Adaltis are selling the NatLab unit with bundled Covid_19 SARS MERS which has cleared certification. Its true up to that point they were only cleared for Meningitis but that situation changed last week.
Also you make mention that they are controlled by Roche or Fischer patents etc which is not true. BATM dont manufacture stuff they need to license their ideas which are well covered by patents or they would not be in business.

The value in BATM is in its IP. They are not a manufacturing or marketing company.

Oooh well done Space Bob. Gold star! Why don’t we have a little light relief during these dark days? I bet BATM does better than any shares you buy with your BATM cash. Let us know what you buy & the price and in a few weeks time we can see how they compare. Shall we say 1st July for a check-in?

And the point is, if there is no interest slowly the price will be marked down and the sells will start appearing and the rollercoaster goes on.

As expected the ( retrace / profit taking ) took the shares down, and it was to 41p at the close.

You could go back and correct a few of your inaccurate statements if you have now had a chance to review the material. Then PO please & thank you.
Still some sensible posts from Madun2000 above which pretty well sum up the "actual" situation.

Don't understand space_bobs negativity on this. 3 different areas of growth that come thru from this epidemic.

1) The news yesterday on the new diagnostic kit for COVID-19 that was developed by Adaltis which is ramping production NOW. Earnings positive in 1H

2) The news in Jan on the NaLabs/Ador development. This company has 40 patents in place, it has its first commercial order in hand, multiple final trials etc I would guess that these all get accelerated, money is being thrown at improving diagnostics etc The backdrop for selling this product could not be more favourable. This is earnings positive for 2H and maybe even 1H.

3) The Novamed deal. Agree that this is more speculative and is at best a 2H story. But in terms of direction, home or office testing is the future. The world has changed. You are going to have to demonstrate you are "virus" free before you can enter a country/office building/somebody's home. In Thailand the govt is requiring to entrants to prove they do not have the virus. How the hell do you do this currently?! Having a home testing kit that is then linked to your mobile to generate a QR code that shows you tested this morning and are clear is probably the way forward.

In China the government has developed an app with Ali and Tencent to give people QR codes to show if they have been in contact with a confirmed case (red), have been in contact at 2 degrees of separation (orange) or if they have zero contact with anyone with any contact with the virus (green). This is done via geolocation on your mobile. This can be done in China because it's China; it probably wouldn't fly in the West. But in any case the flaw in this is that is doesn't actually demonstrate empirically that you don't have the virus. Hence a home testing kit linked to the app.

The reason BATM has struggled to get past ~45p is that it's a sum of parts story versus an earnings story. The break-up may be Simon Thomson's 60p; but break-up values are always difficult to justify other than to a corporate raider. BATM will become a simple PE story later this year as earnings come thru. Of course they have to execute; but it's an open goal to miss

It looks like a day of profit taking after yesterday's large rise

What goes up must come down, is this true?
It is here today but it takes its time, so is slowly moving lower so far, and is Friday, any short term buyers yesterday will cash in.

Agree RSI, need another RNS re specific deals to take it higher so expect a retrace over the next few days. We have not yet seen capitulation in the general market yet imo, despite the drama of the past week. No visibility whatsoever on coronavirus easing and although China seems to be getting back on its feet any recurrence of new cases could see panic return.
