Brexit mortgage fallout as foreign buyers face a ban.


Foreign homebuyers could be blocked from getting a mortgage at one of Britain’s banks after Brexit.

As of 9pm last night, all new residential and buy-to-let mortgage applicants at Santander will have to be a UK resident, making it the first big lender to confirm changes before the end of the transition period on December 31.


Santander will also require existing borrowers who live in the UK but are foreign citizens, and who have a deposit or equity of less than 25 per cent and use their income to borrow money, to prove that they have the right to live permanently in the UK if they are a citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

Cabinet backs Boris Johnson over no-deal Brexit

Support for PM in ‘final throw of the dice’ talks


Boris Johnson told the EU Britain must have “freedom” to make its own rules last night as cabinet ministers said he should pursue a no-deal Brexit unless Brussels backs down.

The prime minister and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, last night agreed to a “final throw of the dice” this week to salvage a deal.


But a senior No 10 figure warned the chances of getting an agreement were now “no better than 50-50” after more than four years and five months of talks.

The two leaders agreed that “no agreement is feasible” without movement on three key issues, admitting the talks were “totally stuck” on fishing quotas, regulations and governance.
