06/12/2019 09:05 | shalder. Yes Bahrain is more liberal than other Arab states regarding drinking, which was nice. But, the penalty for theft can still be the loss of a hand. You should have seen the look on the faces of the three sailors when they had sobered up and told what they COULD expect. The case caused a minor diplomatic flurry at the time. They were shipped home straight from police cells! I dont think they ever returned to the ship. | ribblewader | |

05/12/2019 11:45 | shalder. In 97 I was in Bahrain (supporting Nimrod and VC10 at Muharraq) over the Christmas period. HMS Illustrious called in to Sitra for a few days for crew change and Logs Support. I was one of the POCs for Out of Hours issues (like drunken sailors "liberating" a 6' plastic Donald Duck from outside a store!). I was "rewarded" with a trip to the CPOs mess for drinkies and a tour of the ship. Fortunately the tour was done with before we hit the Bar as I dont remember much after that!
