$700 billion to be spent on military fixed-wing aircraft over next decade

The fixed-wing military aircraft market will be worth nearly $700 billion over the next ten years, according to a soon to be released analysis by Defence Insight.

Fighter aircraft make up the largest segment, worth $452 billion. This is dominated by Lockheed Martin, who’s F-35 alone is forecast to account for around almost half of the total global spending on multi-role and naval fighters.

The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have finalised a $34 billion deal for the next three lots of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters. The deal also sees the cost of all three F-35 variants drop with the F-35A reaching below $80 million.

Why Britain's Tempest Stealth Fighter May Out-Class the F-35

The Tempest was unveiled alongside a new “Combat Air Strategy” document marking the UK’s reorientation to preparing for high-intensity conflicts and the danger posed by modern anti-aircraft weapons. However, the document largely focuses on industrial and financial matters, particularly on keeping British military aerospace sector sustainable despite constrained defense budgets and the steadily increasing cost of high-performance platforms like the Type 26 frigate.

re F35 capability, yes you are correct according to Defense News on 16.11.18. LM were awarded an $83m contract for development and testing for USAF F35A nuclear capability, program lasting up to Feb 2024.

shalder. I am not aware that the F35 is yet certified for nuclear weapons. As such it will require the same time frame as Typhoon for certification (although F35 being such a huge project is likely to focus the process!).
The 6th generation German/French project still has a long way to go before first flight and then nuclear crtification. I suspect that will be at least another 10 years from now.
Trump will, hopefully be a sad footnote by then!

The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have finalized a $34 billion deal for the next three lots of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, setting the price of an F-35A jet below $80 million.

The fresh price tag has come a year earlier than expected. The deal includes 478 F-35s for U.S. and international customers across lots 12, 13 and 14.

On average, the price per aircraft will fall about 12.8 percent across all variants from Lot 11 to Lot 14, according to the Pentagon.

re Typhoon v F35 I think the only big reason F35 is in contention if that they would be nuclear coded and Typhoon is not, and the Tornadoes being replaced are the German contribution to NATO nuclear strike assets. So do they help their aerospace industry and leave the way clear for the 6th generation project with France, or try to please Trump?

Germany announces biggest defence spending rise since end of Cold War

Germany is to increase defense spending by more than €5bn (£4.4bn) this year, Angela Merkel’s government informed Nato on Friday.

It is the biggest rise in the German military budget since the end of the Cold War, but will still leave the country far short of meeting Nato’s target of spending 2 per cent of GDP on defence.

On military aircraft we used a system of graduated fault clearance if they could not be fixed within the available timeframe. Acceptable Deferred Faults (ADF) and Limitations (Lims). ADF's put rectification off to predetermined scheduled maintenance and Lims limited the operational capability. Our European friends tend not to accept these risks. But I do wonder how they maintain the necessary flying hours for pilot certification.
I dare say the RN have similar maintenance cover, but on a larger scale!

The seaworthiness of the RN needs to be seen in the context of a Dutch admission that half their army vehicles won't start , two months ago the Germans declared all their attack helicopters as "unfit to fly" and the French Airforce have have half their airforce grounded . It is all relative. In peacetime the HSE rules are rather different to what would happen in a war footing.
As a BAe shareholder I am very happy to propagate the concept of an under-resourced Navy but suspect that corners would be cut if we needed to launch a fleet..
